SWCA Environmental Consultants is expanding their team of qualified cultural resources field managers. We are looking for dynamic individuals to be key players on our team of dedicated professionals delivering the highest-quality project work.

Your role will be to lead archaeology field projects and crews as a field director or crew chief for projects in Utah and Nevada through the end of the 2018 field season and possibly into the winter months. Many projects require overtime, travel, and lengthy stays in remote areas including camping. This position is a temporary, on-call, hourly position, though a heavy workload through the end of the 2018 field season is anticipated.

Our Salt Lake City office offers a unique work environment and specializes in cultural and natural resources services.

Lead archaeological fieldwork under the direction of a Project Manager and Principal Investigator on projects including monitoring, survey, testing, and data recovery.

  • Supervise, direct, and instruct field and lab personnel as needed.
  • Conduct pre-field preparation including gear, accommodation, and transportation logistics.
  • Ensure that all necessary equipment, supplies, and forms are collected and used appropriately in the field and properly checked-in at the office.
  • Ensure that client and SWCA safety procedures are followed in the field, and make safety calls in the field depending on weather and other extreme conditions.
  • Ensure that the project scope of work is followed.
  • Ensure that all forms and other project data are collected and downloaded daily, and perform QA/QC checks of all the project data.
  • Track fieldwork on a daily basis while in the field by completing tracking sheets and daily logs.
  • Delegate tasks to members of the crew and follow up on delegated tasks.
  • Communicate with all crew members regarding field schedule and project requirements.
  • Organize crew and assign crew members to specific field tasks.
  • Commit to our team-oriented approach to project completion and demonstrate this commitment to your crews.

  • B.A. or B.S. in Archaeology, Anthropology, or related field is required. A Master's degree or higher is preferred.
  • Archaeology field school or comparable experience required.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience is preferred in the Great Basin, Rocky Mountain, or Southwest (western) region with a range of field methodologies, including survey, testing, excavation, and monitoring.
  • First Aid and CPR certification and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) training are preferred.
  • Eligibility for inclusion on a Utah and Nevada BLM Cultural Resource Use Permit in the capacity of Crew Chief is required. Eligibility for Idaho and Wyoming permits is also preferred (but not required)
  • Demonstrated leadership ability is required. Supervisory experience in any field or especially during previous fieldwork is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to work independently as well as supervise small or large field crews.
  • Experience using a Trimble GPS unit.
  • Experience with or ability to quickly learn advanced archaeological technologies such as tablet computer applications, databases, drones, and remote sensing imagery.
  • Must be able to travel and be able to conduct fieldwork for long hours, in sometimes inclement weather conditions, including walking up to 10 miles per day, often in rugged terrain, and be able to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Excellent writing skills and ability to record accurate field notes.
  • Ability to take initiative, resolve problems, and ensure that tasks are completed in the most effective manner.
  • Flexibility and willingness to learn company procedures, and ability to try new, improved techniques.
