Somebody already makes rubber air hoses with magnetic glad hands in HO scale, but I do not remember the company name.   I saw it in that electronic magazine, Model Railroad Hobbyist.

Magnalock brake lines, by Pacific Western Rail Systems is who does them
(sold by NARcorp now I think).

Nice, but pricy for what they are (read how much work you have to do).

For the cost of magnets and thin rubber hose you can probably do
cheaper than the PWRS ones.

I have also read that they are possibly a little on the strong side,
with a user stating one needs to give a bit of a hand restraining
the wagons so they'll part properly. Mind you this is small 4 wheel
stock he was using them on.

You have it precisely 180 degrees backward. :-) They're made by North American Railcar Corporation, and sold exclusively by Pacific Western Rail Systems. $34.95 (give or take depending on US/Canadian exchange rate) for 10 pair.

About 20 years ago, there was an article in (I believe) Railmodel Journal. It wasn't specifically about modeling magnetic air hoses, but had a caption in one of the photos that the modeler used cut up bits of refrigerator magnets as glad hands for his models. The thinnest (business card type) refrigerator magnets I've seen is 12 mil.

That may be another option. Look at the refrigerator magnet your pizza guy gave you. I bet you cold make a whole lot of glad hands for zero dollars investment!

That is the the company, thanks.

But US$3.50 per car (plus shipping) doesn't seem like a lot, and installation doesn't seem too onerous?  $35 for 10 pair, plus shipping.  But I can see shipping to Oz may make the price uncomfortable.

Just visited their web site and there was nothing about magnetic air hoses with glad hands. All their air hoses were just molded in a flexible plastic and look really nice. No mention of being magnetic in any of the scales they offer. Is this the correct company you mentioned???

Magnalock brake lines, by Pacific Western Rail
Systems is who does them

(sold by NARcorp now I think).

Nice, but pricy for what they are (read how much work you
have to do).

For the cost of magnets and thin rubber hose you can
probably do

cheaper than the PWRS ones.

I have also read that they are possibly a little on the
strong side,

with a user stating one needs to give a bit of a hand
restraining

the wagons so they'll part properly. Mind you this is
small 4 wheel

stock he was using them on.

Just because something is commercially available does not mean that one cannot make their own, isn't this the exact thing a lot of modelers bemoan?

For me it's the time involved ... RTR leverages my time to do other things (like assemble couplers!)

I've always been a bit backwards :-) At least I had the right two
companies.

To address Mikes response; Value for money, like beauty, is always
going to be in the eye of the beholder. Besides the exchange rate and
shipping (which does add a lot to the pricey tag) unless things have
changed since I last read up on them you basically get a bag of raw
parts (magnets, rubber tube and wire) which you have to cut to length
and glue. The perceived value of those raw parts and the amount of work
that has to be done by me against the retail value is what I call
pricey - I think we could be paying more for the idea than the value of
the product included.

On the flip side I don't think yourself, or anyone here calls Franks
couplers pricey but I've read it many, many times on the 'net. To them,
the perceived value of those little bit's of Zinc and they still have
to assemble them (or pay more for it to already be done) makes it
pricey.

I'll stop now, I'm just rambling on going nowhere fast. Perhaps I
shouldn't have called them pricey as I don't have the facts on cost
but that's just my perception.

Best to you all,

Tim

Difficult order system but I think they are worth the detail. Good luck I am still trying.

Jeff, you (and I) should wait on the S scale version of the Magnalocks to come out.  The video on the PWRS site says they are coming in "all scales," so you'll eventually be wanting to change out those HO versions you ordered.  But the good news is that, since I rubberscale in both HO and S, you'll have someone you can sell your HO Magnalocks to once the S versions come out!

Either way... these, combined with Sergent couplers, promise to be an unbeatable combo.

They have been saying “coming soon” for an awful long time. I sent them an email asking for any kind of projected date and never heard from them. This combined with their off-beat order system (?????) and you really wonder what they are doing. If they ever become available in a local hobby shop or someplace like Caboose Hobbies in Colorado, it would be a lot easier to purchase... frustrating to say the least.

I have also written them before and got no reply... about a year ago if I remember correctly.  You would think that since they went so far out of their way to provide so many e-mail addresses and contact numbers on their web site's CONTACT page that they could, at least, honor their own attempts to be customer friendly by replying to people who try to contact them.

This is not only frustrating, it is also annoying.

What the heck is a “magnalock”?

I admit I don’t always pursue this group faithfully as I really have no use for any couplers at this time albeit a have a few that I have installed on some test cars. I do have a switching module and will be using some HO scale Sergent’s in (hopefully) the near future, I also see a need for 3 -4 steam engines that will require the use of their neat steam loco coupler pockets.

That said, while the product is great their lack of decent customer contact is terrible.
I checked in this group for more information on the magnalocks and on their website. Little mention here and none on their website. Since their website is their main selling tool it should be kept up, there should be a WORKING contact email address and it should be answered in a reasonably fast manner.

The email listed on the website is info@...

They claim to answer it in 24 hours and they should do that.

I totally agree! That "all scales" has been spanning a long time!

Difficult order system but I think they are worth the detail. Good luck I am still trying.
