next step: investment casting!
Chris Cardinal <cscardinal@...>
Hi folks. Here is a small test run of Type E & F couplers in castable resin. I plan to investment cast them in ZA-12 over the weekend. My previous test and subsequent assembly of prints run in ABS resin worked perfectly.
Fingers crossed! Thanks Chris Cardinal www.facebook.com/ADKrail |

These will operate exactly as Frank’s originals do.

Is there a shrinkage between the resin size and the cooled investment casting size?

Shrinkage is generally between 1 and 2%. I’ll run test prints to dial it in exactly.

I wish every manufacturer was so accommodating!!
I model in contemporary S scale and c1900 On30 with the same couplers. (I know that the couplers are not appropriate for modern railroading but the shelf type are on the wish list.) Despite being heavily invested in Kadee I really love the look and operation of the Sergent couplers. Good luck. We are all holding our breath. Neil |

Chris Some time ago on this forum I demonstrated how nitinol wire could be added to these couplers to enable self centering. The .005 dia wire simulates the Kadee whisker couplers action. These wires must be glued to the shank. Sure would be nice to have a groove on the shank to help locate and stabilize the wire for the gluing process. Wouldn't affect the looks or operation of the coupler. What do you think? George Edgewood, WA |

Chris, If your test couplers perform as you intend, then you will investment cast them in metal for fully operational couplers, just as Frank used to market,am I correct? If so,that would be fantastic and I'll be ordering some for sure. ![]() Could you also,in time and as resources permit, produce an SE Double Shelf coupler in HO? That would be fantastic also. Am building a new HO layout and was figuring I'd have to settle for Kadee double shelf's since no Sergent type SE's are currently available, but I want all Sergent type couplers on my layout as resources permit. Thank you for this tremendous development! Al
