Hi-Tech may not be, Pacific Western Rail is the right one.  Kinda neat ...

Just because something is commercially available does not mean that one cannot make their own, isn't this the exact thing a lot of modelers bemoan?

For me it's the time involved ... RTR leverages my time to do other things (like assemble couplers!)

I've always been a bit backwards :-) At least I had the right two
companies.

To address Mikes response; Value for money, like beauty, is always
going to be in the eye of the beholder. Besides the exchange rate and
shipping (which does add a lot to the pricey tag) unless things have
changed since I last read up on them you basically get a bag of raw
parts (magnets, rubber tube and wire) which you have to cut to length
and glue. The perceived value of those raw parts and the amount of work
that has to be done by me against the retail value is what I call
pricey - I think we could be paying more for the idea than the value of
the product included.

On the flip side I don't think yourself, or anyone here calls Franks
couplers pricey but I've read it many, many times on the 'net. To them,
the perceived value of those little bit's of Zinc and they still have
to assemble them (or pay more for it to already be done) makes it
pricey.

I'll stop now, I'm just rambling on going nowhere fast. Perhaps I
shouldn't have called them pricey as I don't have the facts on cost
but that's just my perception.

Best to you all,

Tim

About 20 years ago, there was an article in (I believe) Railmodel

had a caption in one of the photos that the modeler used cut up bits of
refrigerator magnets as glad hands for his models. The thinnest
(business card type) refrigerator magnets I've seen is 12 mil.

That may be another option. Look at the refrigerator magnet your pizza
guy gave you. I bet you cold make a whole lot of glad hands for zero
dollars investment!

That was Dave Davis, who also wrote a couple articles about his amazing working cushioned underframes on some of his HO box cars (an 86' auto parts car and an Atlas Evans RBL).

I'm not a big fan of the appearance of the NARC hoses and want to attempt Dave's technique using Hi-Tech's hoses. It will likely add some bulk to the glad hands, but I think it will look better than NARC's plain hoses. I'll have to experiment to see how large a magnet will be needed to keep the hoses securely connected.

As I understand it, they're essentially the same company anyway.  North American Railcar Corporation is the manufacturing arm of Pacific Western Rail Systems, which is why they're sold exclusively through PWRS. Another way to look at it could be that NARC is the brand name for products manufactured by PWRS. I'm sure there's more to it from a legal and management standpoint, but that's how I understand it. PWRS or its investors / owners decided to get into the manufacturing business, rather than just having other manufacturers produced custom run models for them, so they created NARC.

They're perfect! Except I see no mention of them being magnetic.

Are you sure?

Magnalock brake lines, by Pacific Western Rail

Systems is who does them

(sold by NARcorp now I think).

Nice, but pricy for what they are (read how much work
you

have to do).

For the cost of magnets and thin rubber hose you can

probably do

cheaper than the PWRS ones.

I have also read that they are possibly a little on the

strong side,

with a user stating one needs to give a bit of a hand

restraining

the wagons so they'll part properly. Mind you this
is

small 4 wheel

stock he was using them on.

The mind plays tricks. Yes, that's it! The article was on his working cushioned draft gear IIRC.

Yeah, I've also wondered about using the high-tech air hoses with some sort of replacement magnetic glad hand. Please keep us (or at least me) updated on your progress.

If you do a search on PWRS, you'll find they had a very sketchy past. I'm not eager to do business with them, but I went on the web site, and filled out the information for the Porter's discount thingy. I got a call later asking when I could schedule some time in the next couple weeks to go over things. I was told it would take 40 minutes for a walk through of the web site. I declined. I don't mind a few ads or a newsletter to get a discount, but this sounded preposterous. #1 rule in business ought to be not to make it complicated for your customers to do business with you. I'm not impressed.

models.
That was Dave Davis,
who also wrote a couple articles about his amazing working
cushioned underframes on some of his HO box cars (an 86'

I'm not a big fan
of the appearance of the NARC hoses and want to attempt
Dave's technique using Hi-Tech's hoses. It will
likely add some bulk to the glad hands, but I think it will
look better than NARC's plain hoses. I'll have to
experiment to see how large a magnet will be needed to keep
the hoses securely connected.

As I understand it,
they're essentially the same company anyway.
North American Railcar Corporation is the
manufacturing arm of Pacific Western Rail Systems, which is
why they're sold exclusively through PWRS. Another way
to look at it could be that NARC is the brand name for
products manufactured by PWRS. I'm sure there's more
to it from a legal and management standpoint, but that's
how I understand it. PWRS or its investors / owners decided
to get into the manufacturing business, rather than just
having other manufacturers produced custom run models for
them, so they created NARC.

I went through this with them 3 years ago because I wanted to buy some of their NARC Canadian cylindrical grain hoppers. I was deployed overseas at the time, so after filling out the Porters info, I received an email from them asking for me to call, and I responded by emailing telling them that it was difficult to call from overseas and that I wanted to do whatever I could online. They went ahead and set up everything they could for me remotely but said that I would still need to call them to give them my credit card info for the account. I was pretty floored that they didn't have a process for taking payment info over the web like every other vendor in this day and age, but I really wanted those grain hoppers..,

I had heard all the horror stories on the Diesel List over the years about PWRS cold calling people and sending giant email ads with huge attachments, so I was very hesitant about doing business with them. I called them via Skype and talked to a very nice man who took my payment info. I really don't remember what we talked about, but it was probably a 5-10 minute conversation. I think he confirmed the four cars that I wanted to order and my other account info.

I think PWRS is trying to create a sales model that includes a "personal" touch where you interact with a real human being, and they're inadvertently making it into a slightly painful and strange process. Part of the reason they want to hold this long phone conversation is apparently so they can gauge your interests and "tailor" your account for your hobby needs. Essentially what I think that means is that they will keep a record of what railroads you model, your era of interest, whether you like diesels, steam, etc. That may mean that they'll send you more ads tailored to those interests, but to date, I've only received their periodic (monthly) email ads, just like Caboose Hobbies or any other dealer. I would talk with them by phone again (I need to update my payment info), but I would make it clear to them that I can't spend 30 minutes on the phone to do it.

Since when is Alexandria, VA is overseas? :-P

I may go ahead and buy some of their magnetic air hoses, but the ROI for 40 minutes of my life isn't worth whatever the Porter's discount might be.

Re: [SergentEng] Re: Coupler

Mike Conder

I got on their web site, scanned through their 25 minute video in less than 20 minutes (a lot of explanation for newbies that I didn't need, especially in making a couple of jigs).  Installation looks quite easy, I think I will plunk down the $$$ for 10 pair and see how they do on Blackstone HOn3 cars.

As they say, the proof is in the pudding.  Worked for the Sergent couplers, will see with this.

I'm not impressed.

article in (I believe) Railmodel Journal. It wasn't
specifically about modeling magnetic air hoses, but had a

bits of refrigerator magnets as glad hands for his
models.
That was Dave Davis,
who also wrote a couple articles about his amazing working
cushioned underframes on some of his HO box cars (an 86'
auto parts car and an Atlas Evans
RBL).

Why I Like Sergents and Won't Change Back Part 1

cnr3304@...

Hi All,

I am in S scale and have been using Sergents since 2001.  I am the only member in the S Scale Workshop to do so.

I have tried to meet the Workshop both ways because the Walthers ProtoMax couplers which are a bit oversize for HO couple quite nicely to the S Scale Sergents.  Kadee 802's (the standard S Scale Coupler) won't.  So I have  started to put these on my motive power and cabooses so that my equipment can work with the rest of the group.

I finished doing a bit of work on an SHS SW1200 including programming.  It has the ProtoMax couplers installed.  However, I could not couple to anything!  I looked and both the knuckle springs were missing.  I hate that.  So, after losing a couple more, probably because I was annoyed about this.  They are in again but what a waste of time!

Sergents don't have knuckle springs to lose. (Let's not mention the ball bearings going AWOL during assembly).  Another reason to stay with Sergents!

Part 2 will be about Kadee style couplers in S coming apart.

cheers,

Andy Malette

Using with Rapido passenger cars

Stirling Millar

I've just started with converting my fleets from Kadee Compatible couplers to Sergent engineering couplers. I have quite a few Rapido passenger cars and would like to know if anyone has converted their "Super Continental" or "Superior Stainless" cars over.

I'd also like to know if the "tailor made" couplers are required for Walthers Amfleet or other walthers passenger cars.

I think that the cars will use Type H couplers, but am not certain and am just trying to figure out what I need.

Yes, and no.  I would say yes, because without you run the risk of drooping couplers, low/high couplers, or couplers that have a double pivot.  The last option is annoying, I have that issue with my Athearn Bombardier cars, the pocket pivots one way and the coupler does the opposite, thus not allowing coupling because of the diaphragms.  They're AWESOME when coupled because the diaphragms are touching, not adjustment needed!

Adding the tailor made ones allows height adjustment with proper spacing and no compounding.  I have one Rapido car, and I have not attempted to convert it, so it may work differently.  I do have the appropriate 36" Reboxx set written down somewhere to convert to code 88 wheels.

I've started with a GMD-1 and an Atlas boxcar, but I had some difficulties with them... Going through this list helped me figure them out.

Hello!

I cant help you with the Rapido cars yet, but my experience with the Walthers is that Yes, a standard shank Type H will fit into the stock Walthers draft gear just dandy, and didnt sag noticably. Had wever, I had a horrendous time COUPLING them, because the diagpharms on the cars stuck out just far enough that the the knuckles wouldn't quite close ennough to allow the ball to drop insi .cde. Seriously, I neeeded an 1/8th of an inch, and I couldn't get them to docit while forcing the cars together. Not enough Hands. The concensus that we reacjed on herecI think is that the Walthers tailor made H couplers are just that slight touch longer than the standard-shank+Draft gear but I have not gone out and tried it, because the conversion prcess is frankly more work thatn I want to invest in six dozen cars in storage.

Difficult order system but I think they are worth the detail. Good luck I am still trying.

Jeff, you (and I) should wait on the S scale version of the Magnalocks to come out.  The video on the PWRS site says they are coming in "all scales," so you'll eventually be wanting to change out those HO versions you ordered.  But the good news is that, since I rubberscale in both HO and S, you'll have someone you can sell your HO Magnalocks to once the S versions come out!

Either way... these, combined with Sergent couplers, promise to be an unbeatable combo.
