Frank has placed all his coupler designs in the public domain ... including a notice on his web site.  The files are not locked ... several of us have been able to successfully open.

I've reached out to Ryan ... I'm going to save in the format Ryan can utilize in his version of AutoDesk AutoCAD.

Have you tried Autodesk Fusion 360? It’s free to download and free for a year under personal non-commercial use. It will open just about every 3D file I’ve seen. But I wonder if the Sergent files might be locked. Or did Frank put them into total public domain?

Looking for Walther's Heavyweight Couplers

Hey Guys,

I wanted to know if anyone has any spare Type E or H couplers for the Walthers Heavyweight Passenger cars? I'm updating my North Coast Limited Fleet of the 1930s with all Sergent Engineering and Proto 87 wheels as I'm doing fine scale modeling.

Sorry for the delayed reply. Unfortunately, I no longer have the ability to make these. The design for these actually came from a customer. You can make something that functions similarly with a magnet from K&J Magnetics (I think I used a 3/16” X 1/2” cylindrical magnet) and a short piece of flat steel. Epoxy these together with a stick for a handle on top and you’ve pretty much got it.

You are right about everything you say about RailPro, and you could add more reasons over using DCC.  One thing you don't mention is the cost: about $40 additional per car or engine with uncoupler support.  Cost is going to be the main determiner for someone to consider using my design.  At $114 per car or engine (see my details in the Files section) for uncouplers at both ends will probably be rejected off-hand simply because of the cost, and there is nothing about my design that would prevent someone from using RailPro instead of DCC with everything else I've described unchanged.  Thank you for your e-mail.

Why DCC? It's a 30 year old nightmare protocol. I'd use something like RailPro that isn't limited by addressing issues. You're going backwards a long ways trying to go forward.

I like them ! Took a while to get assembly down , but as soon as I started using a toothpick to burnish the bearing hole I had much better results . They look great on the cars , and especially on the passenger cars the coulping distance is much better . They uncouple just fine with the magnet tool . Only problem is that aren't easy to couple . My layout has almost no straight track and you need to be right over them to set them up for coupling . Not a big deal for me as I am mostly a runner , but they may be frustrating to someone that does a lot of switching ......Mike

The function-only decoders that I've tested are meant for driving LED's.  The lights functions of most loco decoders are designed for the extra current surge typical of grain-of-wheat incandescent bulbs.  My hardware requires 100mA per uncoupler (intermittent) and it's taken a lot for me to get it that low.  The function only decoders just don't measure up (that I've tested).  The non-prototypical "cut lever down" to uncouple is driven by the way the Sergent Engineering couplers uncouple: the magnet must be near the coupler's top surface.

As for engine-only use, yes that would be a great operational compromise to reduce cost.  My hardware will fit into most tenders, but definitely would not in most steam locos.  Even diesels would be a space challenge.
