It has been a long time since I fiddled with one of these cars, but my first thought would be to upgrade the coupler pocket with a new one.  And I'd look at what John Niemeyer did for his logging cars as a first idea to consider.

Hi, group,

I’m building some HOn3 LaBelle Passenger car kits.

So far, so good, but I’m a bit stymied as to how to do the couplers. I want to use (Naturally) the Sergent HOn3 Sharon Couplers. However, the casting that is for the end platform, coupler mount and truck bolster seems to leave a lot to be desired.

As those of you who have built some of the kits know, the instructions leave quite a bit up to your imagination. Especially in regard to coupler mounting.

The younger, brasher side of me says, “Trash this casting and build something new, from the ground up.” The older, wiser side of me says, “ Ask the group, they surely must have been there, done that.”

I did dig out the 2014 issue of the HOn3 Annual, from White River, which has a very good article on installing couplers on HOn3 rolling stock. However, the article does not deal with the LaBelle type of mounting.

So, if one or more of you folks out there has the solution to this, I would love to hear from you.

You just need a bunch of E couplers. If you have a bunch of logging stuff you can use some Sharon couplers for variety.

For other supplies, pick up a height gauge as those are always useful, I like to use two to compare bothe ends of the car at the same time. Assembly jigs are essential, there is one for E's and one for Sharon's. Uncoupling wands are also necessary, I recommend starting with two and later on get a bunch to put at strategic places around your layout.

Thank you very much Dave. I'm feeling better today but that 7 hours on the table had stiffened up my joints and really messed up my sciatica. But, I think today I may get a little model railroading done.

SDEC87A (yes A's) installed into a nearly complete weathering job on a pair of American Limited Models Trinity 3281 Covered Hoppers.

I'm going to need to order myself a jig and some bulk packs, so I can complete some mass equipping as I finish weathering some of my "simple" weathering jobs.

Nothing, just trying to recover.

On Friday I had a Pulmonary Vein Ablation done to try and cure a-fib and a-flutter. This is the second one in about 18 months. I feel like I've been run over by a bus.
Right now I'm catching up on email.

I have lots of couplers to build, I'll start that again when I feel better.

Absolutely nothing.

However going from no-free-time to all-free-time for at least the next
few weeks I might just get the rest of my couplers assembled. I might

Joe, don't get me wrong - standard type Es aren't completely gone from revenue freight cars, they just seem to be much less common than they were twenty years ago. I always try to go by prototype photos when choosing my coupler type, but that's challenging sometimes because there aren't a lot of online photos from the late '90s.

I'll be starting work on a 1962 LPG tanker from Union Tank Car (white w/black bottom trim ). It's the infamous plate B tanker, 83013; pre 1978 before mandated double shelf couplers.
