I may go ahead and buy some of their magnetic air hoses, but the ROI for 40 minutes of my life isn't worth whatever the Porter's discount might be.

heard all the horror stories on the Diesel List over the
years about PWRS cold calling people and sending giant email
ads with huge attachments, so I was very hesitant about
doing business with them. I called them via Skype and talked
to a very nice man who took my payment info. I really
don't remember what we talked about, but it was probably
a 5-10 minute conversation. I think he confirmed the four
cars that I wanted to order and my other account
info.
I think PWRS is
trying to create a sales model that includes a
"personal" touch where you interact with a real
human being, and they're inadvertently making it into a
slightly painful and strange process. Part of the reason
they want to hold this long phone conversation is apparently
so they can gauge your interests and "tailor" your
account for your hobby needs. Essentially what I think that
means is that they will keep a record of what railroads you
model, your era of interest, whether you like diesels,
steam, etc. That may mean that they'll send you more ads
tailored to those interests, but to date, I've only
received their periodic (monthly) email ads, just like
Caboose Hobbies or any other dealer. I would talk with them
by phone again (I need to update my payment info), but I
would make it clear to them that I can't spend 30
minutes on the phone to do it.

Yeah, I've also wondered about using the high-tech air hoses with some sort of replacement magnetic glad hand. Please keep us (or at least me) updated on your progress.

That was Dave Davis,
who also wrote a couple articles about his amazing working
cushioned underframes on some of his HO box cars (an 86'
auto parts car and an Atlas Evans
RBL).
I'm not a big fan
of the appearance of the NARC hoses and want to attempt
Dave's technique using Hi-Tech's hoses. It will
likely add some bulk to the glad hands, but I think it will
look better than NARC's plain hoses. I'll have to
experiment to see how large a magnet will be needed to keep
the hoses securely connected.

they're essentially the same company anyway.
 North American Railcar Corporation is the
manufacturing arm of Pacific Western Rail Systems, which is
why they're sold exclusively through PWRS. Another way
to look at it could be that NARC is the brand name for
products manufactured by PWRS. I'm sure there's more
to it from a legal and management standpoint, but that's
how I understand it. PWRS or its investors / owners decided
to get into the manufacturing business, rather than just
having other manufacturers produced custom run models for
them, so they created NARC.

About 20 years ago, there was an article in (I believe)

refrigerator magnets I've seen is 12 mil.



That may be another option. Look at the refrigerator magnet

That was Dave Davis, who also wrote a couple articles about his amazing working cushioned underframes on some of his HO box cars (an 86' auto parts car and an Atlas Evans RBL).

I'm not a big fan of the appearance of the NARC hoses and want to attempt Dave's technique using Hi-Tech's hoses. It will likely add some bulk to the glad hands, but I think it will look better than NARC's plain hoses. I'll have to experiment to see how large a magnet will be needed to keep the hoses securely connected.

As I understand it, they're essentially the same company anyway.  North American Railcar Corporation is the manufacturing arm of Pacific Western Rail Systems, which is why they're sold exclusively through PWRS. Another way to look at it could be that NARC is the brand name for products manufactured by PWRS. I'm sure there's more to it from a legal and management standpoint, but that's how I understand it. PWRS or its investors / owners decided to get into the manufacturing business, rather than just having other manufacturers produced custom run models for them, so they created NARC.

I've always been a bit backwards :-) At least I had the right two
companies.

To address Mikes response; Value for money, like beauty, is always
going to be in the eye of the beholder. Besides the exchange rate and
shipping (which does add a lot to the pricey tag) unless things have
changed since I last read up on them you basically get a bag of raw
parts (magnets, rubber tube and wire) which you have to cut to length
and glue. The perceived value of those raw parts and the amount of work
that has to be done by me against the retail value is what I call
pricey - I think we could be paying more for the idea than the value of
the product included.

On the flip side I don't think yourself, or anyone here calls Franks
couplers pricey but I've read it many, many times on the 'net. To them,
the perceived value of those little bit's of Zinc and they still have
to assemble them (or pay more for it to already be done) makes it
pricey.

I'll stop now, I'm just rambling on going nowhere fast. Perhaps I
shouldn't have called them pricey as I don't have the facts on cost
but that's just my perception.

Just visited their web site and there was nothing about magnetic air hoses with glad hands. All their air hoses were just molded in a flexible plastic and look really nice. No mention of being magnetic in any of the scales they offer. Is this the correct company you mentioned???

But US$3.50 per car (plus shipping) doesn't seem like a lot, and installation doesn't seem too onerous?  $35 for 10 pair, plus shipping.  But I can see shipping to Oz may make the price uncomfortable.

Those are the ones! This size is almost the same size as an HO scale Glad-Hand. Use the un-plated ones. The Nickel Plated ones are almost impossible to paint or glue to! Use "GOOP" cement. Its the only thing I have found that will PERMANENTLY glue metal to rubber. The magnets polarization orientation is also important. To find this, use a larger through the thickness polarized magnet and place these little ones on it. Then mark a spot on the both of them that you will call NORTH. After that mark all the little ones using the same method. Then glue the little guys edge on the air-hoses with the Polar North mark always in the same place. They will work like a charm every time.

cement to some old NWSL Super Flexible Wire sheathing.

was made out of Neoprene and without the wire strands in

I model HOn3. I'm making my own magnetic
automatic air hoses using 1mm dia. round, flat magnets I
found on the internet from a guy the that calls himself
"THE SUPER MAGNET GUY". I attach them with GOOP
cement to some old NWSL Super Flexible Wire sheathing. It
was made out of Neoprene and without the wire strands in it,
it is REAL flexible. Its super fun to watch the air hoses
mate up! Once more people start to see these in action, they
are going to become real popular.
