I bought some of the Kadee powdered graphite and found that it is ground too coarse for my liking to use in Sergent couplers.

Then while digging through my automotive tool box I found a tube of powdered graphite I bought in 1980 when I was in high school...yes, I've had it that long It's called Mr. Zip Extra Fine Graphite made by AGS Co. in Muskegon, MI.
It turns out the company still exists and the website shows that they still make fine powdered graphite, but it is no longer called Mr. Zip.

It's supposed to be available at Ace Hardware, True Value Hardware and several auto parts stores.

Be careful with the Rustoleum, a friend recently tried it but it never cured/dried completely.

I got something similar from Home Depot, Krylon brand, that I used on something else. It did take 15-20 minutes to dry to the touch.

Thank you for providing this information. It's very helpful for what I'm looking for. I was thinking great care is needed to make sure the NeoLube doesn't get on the ball bearing (a problem I created for myself with a different lubricant when I first tried out Sergent couplers), so thank you for confirming.

I liked the suggestion from Mike of putting graphite onto the tip of a yellow micro-brush to get it into the crevasses of the knuckle. I think i may try that first before purchasing NeoLube, since I currently have both the graphite and yellow micro-brushes.

Also, reading through Sergent's website, they have good instructions for painting the coupler components first before assembly. It just so happens I have a can of Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer that I'm using for the anti-foul color of a model ship I'm building.

I built 10 of the Sharon types last night for Blackstone cars as a test. You see not all of the Blackstone draft gear boxes are of the same exact dimensions. So you need the 4mm tapered reamer to open up the couplers pivot hole and the shank needs to be thinned a tiny bit with a file.


I'm still a little reluctant to get any Neo-lube directly on the little ball bearing. Neo-lube is made of 3 components, microscopic Graphite, a polymer, and alcohol. The alcohol is the carrier and a polymer usually denotes a binder, I.E. GLUE! Not knowing the specific nature of this polymer I am advising not getting on the little ball. This may be nothing but, why take chances!

Pencil 'lead' contains clay and other fillers. 

 

If using pencil 'lead' for lubrication, use a softer grade pencil.  A 2H pencil is too hard and contains too little graphite to provide the desired lubrication

 

I suggest an HB or softer pencil.  The art supply section of your favorite craft store will have these.

In Model Railroad Hobbyist, I'm not restricted to just HOn3. I'm pleased that I can include the HOn30 guys in the article as well. With that I have a question? What do you recommend for the On30 guys. Standard HO or Sn3 couplers. Which ever one you recommend could I get a couple of pairs for two On30 cars for the article.

For On30, I was thinking of using HO couplers since the stock Bachmann couplers look about the same size as standard HO couplers. But I don't know enough about all the Sergent couplers to know which would be the best for bothOn30nd On3.

Unfortunately we don't have good answers for anything other than HO and HOn3 today. We used to make an S scale coupler and are currently working to re-introduce those. Right now, I have a pile of the new ones on my bench. They look great, but they don't work.

On my Sharons the Neolube works better. Was looking for dry lube to try when I gave the neolube a go. Yes Micro-mark is where I got mine.

May try ptfe and a micro brush if painting gets to be an issue. Net step is to bet coupler boxes for my kit and scratch builds. Going to standardize on these couplers. Well worth the $ and effort. Frank has always made good products and these are even better than the others I have used.

Most 30" railroads use or used 1/2 size couplers. The closest for "O" would be H0 ones (1:87 vs 1:96).
I do not know of any 30" common carriers that used a larger coupler. AS for 2' in Maine only one started with 3/4 size couplers, the WW&F. FAIK, all the others used 1/2 size couplers. I'm sure I will be corrected if I am in error. :)
BTW: "S" is exactly 3/4 size of "O" so a std coupler in S is a 3/4 size in O and vise versa.
BTBTW:: I use H0 for 3/4 size in S and I'm still wondering what to do for my 2' tram. 1/2 size using "N" couplers or do I stick to L&P :) I think there is a HOn3 3/4 size in brass kit form but a ........

ALL Maine 2-foot roads used 3/4 MCB, except Monson and KC which used link and pin to the end.
 
And the WW&F did not start with anything, they inherited link and pin from the W&Q and later converted to 3/4.

True, but the reaming is extremely easy with Sergents tapered reamer.  Just about 3 turns by hand, and you're there.
