A nice evening as over 100 Swainson's Hawks covered the northern sky. They descended into a field to the south of West Coast Tree Farm (north of the night site). As predicted they took off and flew almost directly over onlookers at the evening site. Their destination-The Date Farm. More hawks will probably move to the Date Farm in the dark. Tomorrow with a breeze, they might get up by 7am or earlier. Hopefully the wind will not pick up and the hawks may get up later. They might go to ground near the date farm along Borrego Valley Rd. With food in the valley (grasshoppers), the hawks could possibly linger in the valley before departing.
Earlier oday we had 42 Swainson's migrate along with 4 Turkey Vultures. The SW's spent some time sitting in citrus trees to the north of Henderson Rd. Yes, this is the first time I've ever seen the hawks use the citrus trees.
Today 182 Swainson's Hawks migrated north from Borrego Springs. This evening a few Swainson's Hawks were observed and 2 Golden Eagles. We do not expect many migrating Swainson's Hawks tomorrow. We will continue to monitor migration through Borrego Springs until April 15.
