Swainson's Hawks in Borrego Springs

This evening at 5pm hawks began to arrive very high. I believe the count may exceed 200 substantially. Unfortunately it looks like an early lift-off with wind to 10mph and higher at 7am. We will be cruising the area just after sunup. However from past experience the hawks may take another view of the weather and remain perched until a reasonable hour (8am). The sky was filled by hawks to the west this evening. I believe a figure of around 300 is possible. If it is raining in the morning the hawks may go to ground, a common behavior for Swainson's Hawks. Best viewing will probably be from Borrego Valley Rd, 1.8 miles north of Palm Canyon Drive. Several hawks perched in one Eucalyptus Tree were easily visible from the road.

As predicted, migration today (March 11) began very early (6am, Saturday March 11). A number of kettles formed and streamed out of the valley by 6:30am. A total of 419 Swainson's Hawks were counted.
This evening (March 11) at 4:45-6pm at least 500 Swainson's Hawks and 100 TV's descended into The Roadrunner Club/The Springs and the Date Farm. Wild figures between 500 and 800 hawks are possible.
The wind should be lighter so that migration may start at 8am-9am (new time). However if the wind picks up the hawks will depart earlier. Best viewing is most likely from Borrego Valley Rd and DiGiorgio Rd.

Today, Sunday March 12th, 1,009 Swainson's Hawks were counted. Some Eucalyptus Trees had more than 50 perched hawks. Several kettles with over 100 hawks were observed. This evening no hawks were observed entering the valley. We do not expect many, if any hawks to migrate tomorrow.
