On Friday morning there is an adult Baird's Sandpiper on Pond 20 at the salt works, which is the pond they periodically lower at which time it gets gobs of birds and which is 2/3 of a mile east of the end of 13th Street along the bike trail. One gets good looks at shorebirds with a good scope from the bike trail, but a scope is absolutely required. The good habitat only lasts a couple days, so today and tomorrow should be fine and then it will be too dry. And they only lower this pond at most once per month, so it's good to take advantage of it when they do. The Bairds is currently in the southwest corner of the pond. Given that there are as many as 5,000 Western Sandpipers here, it could take a while to find! Also six Common Terns. Still plenty of Wilson's Phalaropes right off the end of 13th. The only juvenile migrant shorebird I have seen so far is Wilson's. Still one or two Gull-billed terns around, but almost all of them have departed for the season.
