Tecolote Canyon - Odd Duck

Larry Edwards

As I headed into Tecolote Canyon this morning (Via Las Cumbres trailhead), what appears to be a domestic type hybrid white-and-black duck (red eye-ring, reddish bill), possibly an escaped pet, flew out of the canyon, chased by crows, and landed on Glidden St., near  the intersection with Via Las Cumbres, adjacent to the USD lower campus (athletic fields and dorms). Not very frightened of humans or dogs. My wife, Janis Cadwallader, and I first observed this duck in our cul de sac (about a block away) on Thursday evening, Oct. 28.

There is a house on Gardena St. that backs up to the creek that has domestic chickens. I don't know if it has any ducks or waterfowl.

Pine Warbler continues

lehman.paul@verizon.net

The immature male Pine Warbler found yesterday by Dean T. at Montgomery Waller Park in Otay Mesa continues on Monday morning. Like yesterday, it is spending a bunch of time feeding on the ground in and next to the parking lot on the north side of the park along Palm Avenue, particularly around the western half of the parking lot. Sometimes by itself and sometimes with Yellow-rumpeds (including one Myrtle).

late-lingering flycatchers, continuing and new miscellanea

lehman.paul@verizon.net

One mini-theme of October 2021 was the number of late-lingering flycatchers in the county. In addition to Nathan's record-late continuing W. Wood-Pewee in Presidio Park through the 31st and several other late pewees the previous several days, there were several late Willow Flycatchers this month, there are still a fair number of Pacific-slope Flycatchers floating around at month's end (including 2 on the 31st at Fort Rosecrans Cemetery where they presumably would NOT overwinter?), a continuing Hammond's Flycatcher in UTC, and likely wintering Western Kingbirds at both Poggi Greenbelt and with Cassin's Kingbirds along Woodworth Way in Liberty Station (through 31st).

Miscellanea the past few days include a continuing Short-eared Owl along the south end of San Diego Bay which can sometimes be seen at first-light in the early AM or near dusk in the PM from the end of 8th Street in Imperial Beach, a high count of 410 Royal Terns at the salt works on 30 Oct, continuing (returning?) Tropical Kingbird (often with Cassin's) at Dairy Mart through the 30th, a Red-naped Sapsucker in residential Point Loma on the 31st, a White-throated Sparrow found by Nick Barber at FRNC on the 31st, and Cassin's Vireo and Golden-cr Sparrow on the 31st at PLNU. After a slow start, Hermit Thrush numbers appear to be increasing nicely, and American Robins continue to turn up widely in small numbers where clearly migrants. (A few Varied Thrushes have been seen just immediately to our north and west, so hopefully they will start turning up here very soon as well.)

Presidio Park Pewee continuing 10/31

Nathan French

After about 2 hrs of searching I relocated the now latest record WEWP in SD at 10:45am, sallying from a snag down the hill from the olive trees and Mormon Battalion memorial, almost to the Witches Tower (32.7586223, -117.1942651) which seems appropriate for the date. It was there for about 30 mins before going back to its original favorite snags near the Tommy Getz bench. (32.7577403, -117.1926833) Also heard the continuing Summer Tanager calling pituk a few times from the canyon below the bench.

Yellow-bellied Sapsucker at Solana Highlands School and Park

Susan Smith

A  Yellow-bellied Sapsucker adult male appeared in Tipuana tipu  trees at the Solana Highlands Park/Elementary school this morning, ~ 9 am  30 Oct. Weekends and non-school days are the best time to check this area.  This school is at 3520 Long Run Dr, SD. Eve Martin and Rob Farber soon joined me and later so did Dan King, who proceeded to also find a Red-breasted Sapsucker in the same area, and alerted us to that bird.

Saturday Highlights 10/30

Nathan French

The late Western Wood-Pewee was still at Presidio Park this morning, in a different area across the road and down the hill from the olive trees. (32.7583931, -117.1942269) No sign of the Summer Tanager though.

I also checked the west side of Balboa Park for the Greater Pewee with no luck, but found a Blackpoll Warbler as a consolation. The BLPW was in a euc west of the sidewalk north of Juniper Road that has tipus on both sides around 11:45am (32.7298581, -117.1587044)

Presidio Park WEWP and SUTA continuing 10/29

Nathan French

The late lingering Western Wood-Pewee was in the same general area I found it a couple of days ago. Female Summer Tanager also made another brief appearance. I can’t edit photos till later as there is a Zoom mediation happening in our shared office, so you’ll just have to take my word for now.

More info and photos eventually:

Fiesta Island longspur

At 9:30 this morning (10/29/21) a LAPLAND LONGSPUR was present in the Fiesta Island dog run.  It was in the north section (north of the eucs) loosely associated with horned larks.

Stonewall Mine

Nancy Christensen

The Williamson’s Sapsucker was seen briefly this morning. Located by following its call to the fenced area near the old cabin. This would be west and north of the bathrooms. This is actually the same area where Sara and others reported it the other day.

Also seen was the Zone-tailed hawk which put in a nice show over the parking lot. As we were leaving the area, the ZTHA was sitting on a pole north of the lake area, but before the turn to Sunrise Highway.

Santee Lakes Blackburnian Warbler, Jacumba 8 Harris's Hawks and Summer Tanager

lehman.paul@verizon.net

On Friday morning, visiting Sacramento birder Steve Abbott has photographed yet another Blackburnian Warbler in the county, this one at Santee Lakes. They had the bird in sycamores over the gazebo that is just north of the general store at Lake #5.

I am spending Friday morning at Jacumba, where all eight Harris's Hawks are still accounted for, although today they were back early in the morning along the northern edge of town, where they originally were back in September. But they didn't last too long and after that they disappeared. The other highlight in town today is an adult male Summer Tanager. The male Vermilion flycatcher continues at the pond, and American Robin numbers have increased some more. The usual pair of Scott's Orioles.

Help with Spanish bird names and descriptions

Hal Benham

Hello! I am working on a project for Friends of Daley Ranch that involves pictures and written descriptions of common birds found there that would be mounted on signs near Middle Pond and the trail loop atop the dam.

The signs will be in English and Spanish, with short descriptions of the birds.

I will write out the English descriptions, but I need help with the Spanish. If anyone could help me accurately translate my descriptions, it would be much appreciated.

Thank you!

Returning Grace's Warbler, Pt Loma residential area

Sara Baase Mayers

The Grace's Warbler that Jim Pawlicki photographed on Albion St. in February is back.  I saw it in a private backyard this morning, not accessible or visible from the street, but it might sometimes be seen along the street, as it was for Jim and Matt last winter.
