A Tern of Interest, Maybe

ross christie

On Wednesday, 10/6, after viewing the Black-throated Blue Warbler at Robb Field I had a few minutes before I had to run off for an appointment.  So, I took a quick look at the mudflats in the river.  I didn't have my scope with me, only my binoculars and a camera.  I saw a tern in the Elegant Tern group that had black at the base of its bill and some yellow at the tip (maybe more than just the tip).  The terns got startled and flew up and I only managed to get one fair picture that doesn't conclusively determine identification.  The flock returned to the island but I couldn't re-find the tern in question.  Very likely this was just a hybrid Elegant Tern but if anyone happens to be looking into the River over the weekend maybe be on the lookout a possible 'tern of interest.'

Blackburnian Warbler #14, pewee glut

lehman.paul@verizon.net

On Friday the 8th, I had a Blackburnian Warbler in some mildly lerpy eucalyptus in Tierrasanta. This is the FOURTEENTH Blackburnian Warbler in San Diego County this fall! The bird was in a flock of about 15-20 Yellow-rumpeds and a couple O-c's and a Yellow--a flock that does move around the neighborhood a fair amount--in these eucs along the stream at the southeast corner of Santo Road and Antigua Blvd.

Yesterday's final pooled total of coastal San Diego Co. Western Wood-Pewees was 16 birds--impressive for the 7th of October. (And I had another one today...)

I am currently watching a Palm Warbler at Miramar National Cemetery. The bird has been staying around the stones on the west side of the Blue Star Memorial, approximately here: 32.872476,-117.189681

There is also a Blackburnian Warbler in the same area, in the eucs north of the pavilions and picnic tables near a small red brick wall with a brass sign for the park.

A single Pectoral Sandpiper is still present with the dowitcher/yellowlegs flock along with a Wilson's Snipe.

Ovenbird @ SD Zoo

Trent R. Stanley

I found an Ovenbird this morning (10/7) while working at the Zoo. The tail bobbing got my attention and I was really hoping for a Worm-eating warbler, but will settle for an Ovenbird any day!!!

Sadly, it's located on an off limits hillside behind the Bird of Paradise aviaries at Elephant Odyssey.

Glad to hear it. I've been birding the B&B Gardens off and on ever since
the lockdown started, and I haven't once seen them--was wondering if
they had been extirpated.

This bird has gone missing, several birders hunting for it. Unfortunately, Dave’s post got delayed in cyber space and was a couple of hours slow reaching us.

Yet another Chestnut sided Warbler

lehman.paul@verizon.net

Thursday afternoon there is yet another new Chestnut-sided Warbler in town, this one with Yellow rumps in the fairly nice trees around the Southgate Village apartments which is along Beyer Way in Otay Mesa. Not everyone's cup of tea to bird an apartment complex, which you should also stay near the sidewalk side of the buildings so you're not right in front of people's units. There was a Blackpoll warbler here last fall and a few years earlier a Palm Warbler wintered here two years in a row.

One of the two Pectoral Sandpipers Dan found at the Tijuana River bridge was still present 90 minutes later.

And I've been told about additional pewees today at Allied Gardens and San Dieguito County Park, bringing the day's total to at least 12.

At least one still continues at 1:26 hours. Seen with Dowitcher. A small group proposed it flew off when spooked, however it was hiding behind the dowitcher.

10 Pewees and counting

lehman.paul@verizon.net

The count of wood-peewees today, Thursday, is now up to 10, with, again, four Point Loma and four Coronado, and I've heard that other observers have had one at the bird & butterfly and one up in Carlsbad. If anyone else has seen a pewee today, please contact me privately, as I'd like to see what the total for the county is today, which is a surprisingly late date to have this many still around.

This morning (10/7/21) at 9:30, I saw an adult PAINTED REDSTART (undoubtedly the same bird that wintered here last winter).  It was in the Tipu trees on the eastern edge of Standley Middle School.  Importantly, there are signs on the property warning against walking on the lawns or interior sidewalks during school hours (7:30 AM to 3:30 PM).  Birders please confine your movements during those hours to the sidewalk along the street (Radcliffe).  It was easily seen from there this morning.
