Villa La Jolla Park late morning thru early afternoon
Lisa Ruby
I arrived at Villa La Jolla Park around 9:45 this morning and spent
nearly 4 hours there. As Paul mentioned, the Black-throated Blue Warbler was still there, as were both the Gray Flycatcher and Plumbeous Vireo. It took some effort to locate the Plumbeous Vireo. I also discovered when going through my photos that I had a first year Tennessee Warbler. I was trying to photograph an uncooperative Nashville Warbler and the Tennessee got in the mix. A bunch of us are in Rosecrans Cemetery and had a flock of about 27 of them land among the headstones. They’re currently walking around grazing near the commital shelter.

Re: broadwinged hawk@continue at FRNC

I’m *almost* certain I saw the Broad-winged Hawk around 3:30 get chased by a crow over the SE section of the cemetery (from the road). It flushed from a tree, flew in a circle, and disappeared as I turned to grab my camera. No vocalizations. Size was about the same as the crow, and wings seemed straight. Not sure which direction it went, I’m checking Cabrillo currently…

Warbler miscellanea, and a word about the Little Stint
lehman.paul@verizon.net
The Villa La Jolla Park Black-throated Blue warbler continues today, Wednesday, there was a Blackpoll warbler in some tipus in a business courtyard in UTC where access might be an issue, and a Black and white warbler is back for its second winter to the Stonecrest neighborhood off Aero Drive.
A word about the salt works Little Stint. That bird often runs hot and cold during its fall and winter stay, being reliably seen on a daily basis for a week or two and then being essentially impossible to find for a few weeks and then becoming findable again, always on its favorite island at the end of 10th. This year the bird was found back in July and then not seen at all again for 6 weeks but then became reliable for one or two weeks around mid September, but now in October it's basically not being seen again. However, a fair number of out of town birders reported it both immediately before and after the October 1st pelagic trip when they were visiting town, and a fair number of such records are often unreliable. Some descriptions sound okay, whereas some descriptions seem to rely too heavily on the bird chasing other peep, which of course the bird is notorious for doing but of course some Westerns will chase other Westerns as well, and then they mention that the bird was paler gray above than the nearby Westerns, but this is not correct for the Little Stint. It is not paler above. And sometimes there's a good description of the bird but then a photo is included, although of course always distant and not diagnostic, but often shows something that doesn't look quite right for the stint. Anyway, the bottom line is that this bird is reported substantially more often than is likely correct, and observers are encouraged to be very careful. Paul Lehman, San Diego |

Buena Vista Audubon sponsored Birding Pelagic trip Oct. 22nd.
David Povey
Hello Birders, This is a reminder that the last 2022 BVAS sponsored pelagic birding trip is Saturday, Oct. 22nd. This trip is an often requested shorter 6 hr. trip and will visit inshore areas out to the Nine Mile Bank, perhaps slightly into the San Diego Trough, and north towards La Jolla as time allows. October can still produce some interesting birds offshore, such as the possibility for Buller's and Flesh-footed Shearwaters, maybe a South Polar Skua. The 2022 season has produced a plethora of boobies, including Red-footed, Nazca, Brown, and even a scarce for us, Blue-footed Booby. We'd expect to see some of the usual fall migrants, and we could get the first of the wintering species. Maybe even a land bird or two...? The trip departs at 7 a.m. and will return by 1 p.m. ( remember to arrive at the landing between 6 and 6:15 a.m.). The price is $105. We will be aboard the comfortable 80 ft, Legacy. Reservations can be made at www.sdwhale.com or call Seaforth Sportfishing Landing at 619 224-3383. As of this morning there were 15 spots left, but I would suggest you act soon. I believe the trip will fill. I hope we will see you onboard. We always have a great time. I would like to thank all of you for supporting the Buena Vista Audubon sponsored pelagic trips for a successful 2022 season. We had some great birds, such as a Wedge-tailed Shearwater, Cook's Petrel, Guadalupe Murrelet, Townsend's Storm Petrels, among others. Some crazy misses, and what is with our stealth Manx Shearwater all summer? Best of all was sharing this amazing pelagic wilderness, with you. We will be working to put together the 2023 season schedule shortly and hope to have that approved by all parties and up on the www.sandiegopelagics.com website by no later than the end of January 2023. Any suggestions or requests should be sent to the above website. We value your input. Thanks again and good birding, Dave Povey Dulzura |

Preliminary Point Loma report Wednesday morning
lehman.paul@verizon.net
The preliminary report from Point Loma on Wednesday morning is that more birds are gone than still present. No sign of Gray catbird or Kentucky warbler nor the Philadelphia Vireo. The northeast corner Least flycatcher and Summer tanager continue, as does the Palm warbler closer to or just south of the main entrance, east side. In the residential area, the Chestnut sided warbler continues along Dupont between Catalina and silvergate.

Jim Pawlicki just photographed one flying south, from where it flushed from a tree near the committal shelter, towards Cabrillo. Given the thunderstorm here currently, I’d suspect it will roost on Pt Loma and possibly be chaseable in the morning? Justyn Stahl |

Dickcissel - Liberty Station Park
Joseph Alsadi
As I was softly asking a hidden warbler to reveal itself, a Dickcissel flew in and landed less than 10 feet away, giving a series of single note “check” calls. When I tried reaching for my camera it gave its fart call and disappeared in a bush here (32.7370520, -117.2095788). Heavy bill, rufous in wings, and yellow center of breast.

Kentucky Warbler FRNC
Derek Hameister
Hello all, This morning I had a brief encounter with a Kentucky Warbler just south of the main entrance on the eastern edge of the cemetery by "The Wall" or the "Euc Grove" (32.6871716, -117.2439446). The encounter was brief and despite a handful of observers looking it wasn't seen again. Perhaps late in the day or early tomorrow morning? Good luck! Derek Hameister Seal Beach |

Re: Black throated blue warbler
Marcie Mason
The Black-throated Blue Warbler has been refound in various trees in Villa La Jolla park. It was seen in the Chinese Elms just north of the playground, in the Tipu in the NW corner, the Tipu in the NE corner and momentarily in nearby Eucs. There is also a Gray Flycatcher towards the east end of the walkway that borders the north edge of the playground area. Marcie Mason Clairemont

Philadelphia Vireo and Least Flycatcher continue
lehman.paul@verizon.net
Both the Philadelphia Vireo and the Least Flycatcher continue in the Northeast corner of Fort Rosecrans Cemetery on Tuesday morning. As yesterday, the vireo likes the Chinese elm trees at various parts of the loop. And as before, the Least flycatcher likes the northwest corner of the Northeast loop.
