FRNC - White-throated Sparrow, 30 Oct 2013
Gary Nunn
Made a quick circuit of Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery this evening. Really very quiet with few birds around. I made one last look around the east side "wall" area when up popped a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW perched on top of the wall! It appeared to be a first-winter type retaining some juvenile dark streaking on the underparts. -- Gary Nunn, |

Grey Catbird & Hooded Oriole -- Borrego Springs
This afternoon Bob Theriault telephoned to invite me to look at a Grey Catbird flitting around his front yard, coming every 15 minutes into a bush with small berries in the middle of the U-Turn of his driveway. He is not near a computer but asked that I post the find to this listserv and invite birders who wish to try for the bird to park on the street in front of his house and walk the driveway. The “berry” bush is on the “U” of the drive closest to the house. Bob’s home address is 3076 Broken Arrow , just two houses off the famous Tilting T.
This morning at our hummingbird feeders Ann and I enjoyed a third straight day of a bright male Hooded Oriole. Three days in a row…. perhaps we’ll have a wintering bird. Hummingbird counts at the feeders average about 15 Anna’s and 7 Costa’s at any given time.

On Weds, Oct 30, there was a flock of 7 (Aleutian) CACKLING GEESE in the TRV, which landed in the river channel adjacent to the sod farm. There were 2 Red-breasted Sapsuckers in the Bird and Butterfly Garden. On Thurs, the 31st, two separate getting-late SWAINSON'S THRUSHES were along the San Diego River near Mission Center Drive. This section of the river currently has a large bloom of some sort of duckweed or algal growth--probably not great for the river's health but good for attracting a bunch of waterfowl, herons, gallinules, and such.

Bald Eagle Breeding in San Diego County
Marsha Ingersoll
Hi
Bald Eagles have bred uncommonly in San Diego County. A pair successfully fledged young several years ago at Lake Henshaw, and an immature bird was seen at Rangeland Road near Ramona this summer near an active nest. There may be other active nest in recent years that my brief review did not find. This summer a pair of Bald Eagles successfully fledged a chick on private property at the small pond at Corta Medera Ranch south of Pine Valley. http://goo.gl/maps/YlFwX I did not personally observe the birds but have received diagnosticphoto documentation from the caretaker of the ranch taken 5/11/13. Rohr Park New Black and White Warbler and Continuing Northern Parula
wngit2@...
Congratulations! Fellow SDFO members on your new website. Please forgive the delayed post. I only had a small window of time to bird and post yesterday. On October 31, 2013 at 8:30 AM, the NORTHERN PARULA originally reported by Dean DeTommaso on October 27, 2013, continued in a locust tree, southeast of the entrance road to parking lot C. A new BLACK AND WHITE WARBLER was foraging in a separate locust tree, closer to the entrance to parking lot C.

Rohr Park

I visited Rohr Park yesterday for the first time in almost 30 years (birding sure takes you to a variety of places!) Although I did not find the Parula reported there, I did see the Black and White warbler, Townsend’s Warblers (2) and a Yellow Warbler. Numerous Ruby-crowned Kinglets. All of these small birds were found in the locust trees southeast of the third driveway (entrance to Lot C).
Photos below (not good ones I’m afraid), of some of the birds:
Mystery Warbler – yellow below, gray on head, back and neck. No wing bars. Fairly long bill, long tail. It has been suggested that this an orange-crowned warbler…… https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/_Iy8pv6-lTCRfrFAL18xO9MTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/rfjNI5I2lcvJZ4XSDhm3HdMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink Townsend’s Warbler https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/Sb8FKOx5rnXZNc-4fsmNP9MTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink Western Tanager https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/I7mgBOsp4kHN35GdNFZLLNMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink Red-naped Sapsucker (there may have been 2 birds present – one shows a great deal more white on the side of the head) https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/Xbi7THAPurXUP1e8Rgq249MTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink ?Rose-breasted Grosbeak https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/F7wjzjBdDDFIPXoXJLpZ0NMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink The Grosbeak was very pale and washed out to my eye – the photo is much warmer probably because of the late time of day. Bill appears to be uniformly pale pink.
The tanager, grosbeak, sapsucker, as well as a nuthatch, were all found enjoying some small puddles between the railroad tracks and the fence.

San Diego River Estuary
Gary Grantham
Today (11/1/13) I did a scouting trip for a walk I’m leading on Monday at
the San Diego River Estuary. Of the 55 species seen there were 11 species
of ducks, American White Pelican, Common Loon and a fairly nice assortment of
shorebirds for high tide. I have been leading walks here for 11 years, so
it’s rare I see a bird I haven’t seen here before, but I had a ROCK WREN among
the riprap by the Life Guard Headquarters at Hospitality Point. There are
several feral cats in this area, so hopefully it will stick around.

Lake Skinner BFBO sightings?
Sheri
Dear San Diego Region Birders, Matt and I are interested to know if there have been any BFBO sightings at Lake Skinner over the last week? We are currently birding Salton Sea and would like to stop by Lake Skinner on the way home, especially for the BFBO. Please email me directly if you can offer any information on the BFBO status at Lake Skinner.
Thanks very much! Sheri Lubin and Matt V. Santa Ynez |

Re: [SanDiegoRegionBirding & RBA] Rohr Park
Christopher Adler
Here are photos from yesterday morning in Rohr Park: Red-naped Sapsucker (4 photos of one individual) Northern Parula (4 photos) Black-and-white Warbler (2 photos of one individual) This sapsucker shows more white on the face with some red incursion into the white, unlike
the bird in Nancy's photo, so there does appear to be two individuals. This Black-and-white Warbler was on the same tree as the Parula. I didn't find a second one. I did also have Townsend's and Wilson's Warblers, but none of the other birds that have been mentioned.

Bald Eagle, Plumbeous, Bl+wh., Large-billed Savannahs
Paul Lehman
Today, Saturday the 2nd, there was a young BALD EAGLE at Sweetwater Reservoir--very rare on the coastal slope. The BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER continues in Rohr Park in the locust-type trees on the east side of the fenced historical house inside park entrance 'C.' The returning THICK-BILLED KINGBIRD off Otay Valley Road (Pogi Canyon) in Chula Vista was present this morning around 9:30 AM in the open space park; this bird is most often seen during the warmer hours of the day--between mid-morning and early afternoon (but even then it is decidedly sporadic), rather than early or late in the day. At EastLake, in eastern Chula Vista, there was a PLUMBEOUS VIREO and a HAMMOND'S FLYCATCHER in the alders and cottonwoods along the south side of the lake, and a Horned Grebe on the lake itself was at a slightly odd location. At Lower Otay Lake, there were two juvenile THAYER'S GULLS and a juvenile GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL; but the eucalyptus there are NOT lerpy this year, so relatively few Yellow-rumps and no sign of last year's Bay-breasted or Prairie.
Yesterday, Nov 1, there were 4 LARGE-BILLED Savannah Sparrows at Crown Point (Mission Bay), and a continuing Hooded Oriole was nearby. Barbara Carlson et al. report the continuing GRAY CATBIRD today, Saturday, in Borrego Springs. --Paul Lehman, San Diego |

Borrego Valley Birds - November Record Yellow Warbler
This morning (Sunday) at La Casa del Zoro a female-type Yellow Warbler foraged with the Yellow-rumps. This is the first November record of a Yellow Warbler in the Borrego Valley . Photos: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S15554983
The first – and possibly only -- Western Grebe of 2013 is still in the Roadrunner Club “Swan Pond” easily viewed from Babe Zaharis Drive . http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S15555087
The pond at the defunct – but soon to resurrect? - Rams Hill Golf Course was bone dry last year but filled to perhaps 3 feet this summer after the torrential monsoons. The pond is evaporating rapidly. The diving ducks have moved on, leaving only dabblers and shorebirds behind including 3 Greater Yellowlegs and 3 Wilson’s Snipe. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S15555087 Terry Hunefeld Borrego Springs |
