The Point Loma residential Magnolia Warbler present all day yesterday appears to be gone this morning. No sign of it  in over two hours of several birders looking and listening. Not a surprise, given that a good half of the late spring landbird migrants are one-day wonders anyway, irrespective of the weather. The only migrant I saw in the neighborhood this morning was a singing male Western Tanager.

Jayne Lesley and I observed 3 white eyes: 2 adults feeding a fledged chick. Photo of one adult on my eBird check list:

We observed them for 30 minutes, and they were still visible and very active when we left. We also captured some video with their calls audible. The exact location is at the junction of Rios Avenue and Gibson Point. They are in the landscaping on the south side of Gibson Point, but they also occasionally flew across Rios to bushes in the yard of the house on the corner of Rios and Seabright. While not mentioned in the Atlas, they have been recorded in Encinitas, but no breeding confirmed. Brennan had one in San Elijo Lagoon last year, so they seem to be expanding and doing well. Has anyone else seen evidence of breeding in the county?

On Friday morning, there is an adult male Baltimore Oriole at the bird and butterfly garden in the TRV. Currently in the trees near the parking lot.

The next San Elijo monthly bird count will be Monday 10 June.  Counts are conducted by volunteers on the second Monday of each month, rain or shine.  Please spread the word or join us if you can (no RSVP required).  Meet at 7:30 am at the north end of Rios Ave in Solana Beach (north from Lomas Santa Fe Dr, west of I-5) to divide into groups to cover different subareas.  A compilation generally follows around noon at the nature center on Manchester Ave (bring your own lunch).

Over the past three days there has still been a trickle of typical early-June landbird migrants passing through, including a few W. Wood-Pewees, Willow Flycatchers, Swainson's Thrushes, and Western Tanagers. Singing Swainson's Thrushes at Sorrento Valley, along the SD River near the SD Mission, and along the SD River west of Mast Park (2) are all presumably on territory. A Phainopepla at Pt. Loma Nazarene Univ. on 4 June was probably an early post-breeding disperser from somewhere else. Seems as though there's been a noticeable influx in Marbled Godwit numbers already starting around the 3rd or so, which if not just a shuffling of unknown over-summering birds would suggest that a lot of failed breeders have come back already over 2-3 weeks early this year. A Brant and 1 or 2 Reddish Egrets continue on south San Diego Bay, and there are 9 Ruddy Turnstones and 2 Western Sandpipers at the saltworks. Finally, at least 7 adult and 2 family-groups of 11 duckling Redheads are at San Dieguito Lagoon in Del Mar, the only quasi-consistent breeding locality in the county.
