Greater White-fronted Geese and Vermilion Flycatcher at Lake Morena

Jeremiah Stock

I birded Lake Morena County Park mid-day Saturday September 25, 2021.  I walked from the area of the campground to the muddy edge of the upper, shallow arm of the lake.  There was a flock of 44 Greater White-fronted Geese along the shoreline that included at least 5 juveniles without speckled bellies.  Also saw a female Vermilion Flycatcher near the water's edge that was molting its tail feathers.  Finally, there was a white-headed adult Bald Eagle on a boulder in the lake.

Blackpoll Warbler continues

lehman.paul@verizon.net

The Blackpoll Warbler found by Chris Adler this morning in Allied Gardens is still present as of noon but has moved and is now feeding in the couple tipu trees and rarely the ficus that are at the extreme southwest corner of that main lawn area that has also the picnic tables and the kiddie playground, rather than in the one large lerpy eucalyptus that's along the south central part of that big lawn.

I also hear that the northern parula found by Tim Swain was still in its tipu trees in La Jolla as of 20 minutes ago.

At Jacumba, there's an adult male Vermilion flycatcher at the pond.

Baltimore Oriole - Agua Caliente

This morning I found a Baltimore Oriole female feeding on palm fruit at Agua Caliente County Park. It was in the back corner near the shuffleboard court and the sign that says Moonlight Trail.

Blackpoll Warbler - Allied Gardens

Christopher Adler

This morning at the Allied Gardens Recreation Center there was a Blackpoll Warbler,
in the largest euc on the south side of the central grassy field. Also in this euc
was a Solitary-type vireo I'm calling Plumbeous since it was a slaty gray above
and the faint color on the sides of the breast was mostly dingy-gray.
(But I've been wrong about Plumbeous vs. Cassin's before!)
Also, Eitan had a Plumbeous in this park last winter, and one was reported to
eBird on 9/21/21 by Joe Alsadi.

Both birds stayed quite high and the euc and played hard-to-get. ID photos in the eBird
report:

Northern Parula - La Jolla

Timothy Swain

As of 9:20 there is a Northern Parula in the same tipu trees that have had a Tennessee Warbler recently at the Ladder Day Saints Center (?) in La Jolla. Again, was easily seen from the path between UCSD and La Jolla Farms Rd. Coordinates here: (32.8794582, -117.2443010)

8 Harris's Hawks, Tennessee, wintering Hammond's

lehman.paul@verizon.net

On Saturday morning the group of Harris's Hawks at Jacumba has increased to eight birds! Sitting in totally dead or half dead cottonwood trees off the Northeast side of town. As usual look north from Campo and Seeley or Campo and Carisso. Early and late in the day at this site will likely be most reliable as the birds will likely move all around the edge of town foraging during the rest of the day.

Yesterday, Friday, there was a brief Tennessee Warbler out on Point Loma which vanished pretty quickly. And the wintering Hammonds Flycatcher has returned for its second year to the nice little Genesee Highlands HOA park which is only a block or so to the southeast of Doyle Park in UTC. An adult male Bullocks Oriole in Villa La Jolla Park is very likely a returning wintering bird.

Sorry for the late report, but the group of four Harris's Hawks were still present yesterday evening (23 Sep) at about 6pm in the extreme NE corner of town in a dead tree.

There is a group of four adult Harris's Hawks currently sitting in a dead cottonwood tree at the Northeast corner of residential Jacumba, Tuesday morning at 7:15 a.m. The intersection at the Northeast corner of town is Campo and Seeley, and the dead cottonwood tree is just immediately to the north-northeast of that intersection behind the houses. Obviously the birds could move around to other trees around the edge of town as they hunt.

Re: Canada Warbler

Max Leibowitz

Besides the Canada Warbler that I only saw the one time in the bushes by the parking lot, I had the dull Blackburnian just as a huge thunderstorm came roaring on through close to noon. Put my camera away in the carnot thinking I was actually find this warbler when I saw this storm coming in. I was the only remaining birder of the morning crew still around. It was by the dry stream bed (referred to as a ditch as well) west of the ball field low at the edge of one of the pines between 2 or 3 smaller trees (32.8250045, -116.5318128) moving with a mixed flock of at least 3 or 4 Wilson’s, 2 Yellow’s, and a Nashville. I only had the Blackburnian briefly for like 20-30 seconds before losing it for good. Checked the trees by the restrooms south of the ball field before leaving to nothing being there. Just be cautious of a dull female Townsend’s that is in the area though it wasn’t close by at least for me at the given time. That same bird teased a few of us early on in the morning when it was very high up in the pines. The wind picked up a ton once the storm started coming through and dumped a good amount of rain so I left before it got too much. My eBird list will be up later this afternoon.
Good birding,

Clay-Colored Sparrow, Carmel Valley Rec Center

Kyle Fischer

Hi all,

There is what appears to be a Clay-Colored Sparrow at the Carmel Valley Rec Center, last seen near the NW corner of the solar panel covered lot (32.94881732480739, -117.23504534518729), frequenting the trees and chainlink fence between the lot and field.

Found on my lunch break sans optics so... caveat birder.

Kyle

Painted and Indigo Buntings, Tropical kingbird, miscellanea

lehman.paul@verizon.net

On Wednesday the 22nd, there was a green Painted Bunting and a brown Indigo Bunting, as well as a Yellow-headed Blackbird, at a site in South County that's pretty marginal for public access. Concerns over access, and safety for single female birders, and over possible health implications of walking around at the site. So when I could not refind the Painted an hour later, I thought it best not to publicize it. Sorry. Also yesterday, there was a Tropical Kingbird in Coronado, the first sighting of one in the county this fall.

At dawn this morning, Thurs, a Lesser Nighthawk was briefly flying around over the main Dairy Mart pond.

Recent sightings at the salt works include the continuing Little Stint off the end of 10th, but beware it's not the only peep there that is chasing other peep around, as well as a Pectoral Sandpiper off the end of 13th.
