Justyn Stahl

SDFO Event – Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at 6:00 pm is our next meeting of San Diego Field Ornithologists.

Program: Michael O. Hilchey will speak on “The Sandia Rosy-Finch Project.” The Sandia Rosy-Finch Project is a long-term winter ecology study of the rosy- finches at Sandia Crest just outside of Albuquerque, NM. Over the years, this site has become a premier location for birders all across the world hoping to find all three of North America's rosy-finch species as well as host to the most extensive winter study of these elusive birds. As one of the primary investigators of the project for over 10 years, Michael will present an overview of the project, including the origin of the work, what they have learned about these birds, and what they hope to learn in the future. He will discuss identification, aging and sexing techniques, molt limits, migration dynamics, population dynamics, and conservation status of these high-altitude specialists.
