Re: San Diego CBC results for 19 December 2020

One typo: the 67-year average should read “1953-2019” not “1963...”

Well, the dust has finally settled (and gotten quite deep, actually!), but I’ve finalized the numbers for the 68th San Diego CBC (part of the 121st Audubon CBC). My apologies for the delay in putting together the following summary. We finished with 220 species on count day, 19 December 2020, thanks to the efforts of 113 people. This was just 2 short of our all-time high here in San Diego of 222 in 1969, and incredibly just 3 short of the top count in the country this year, as Matagorda County, Texas had a “mere” 223 due to poor weather. Many observers here in San Diego put in longer than normal days given that the mid-day in-person compilation was cancelled due to COVID-19.  This no doubt had a positive effect on our numbers of species and individuals, despite the downside of missing out on the lunch and camaraderie. Thanks again!

We had one new, countable, species on the count this year, RED-FOOTED BOOBY, and one new, non-countable exotic, SWINHOE’S WHITE-EYE.

Species seen this year that have appeared on 10 or fewer counts (total number of counts recorded, including 2020): CACKLING GOOSE (10), LITTLE STINT (3), LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL (2), BROWN BOOBY (9), RED-FOOTED BOOBY (1), YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER (5), DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER (3), THICK-BILLED KINGBIRD (10), SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER (4), SCALY-BREASTED MUNIA (8), CLAY-COLORED SPARROW (8), PINE WARBLER (10), and BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK (7).

New high counts were set for several species. Some of these are likely just reflections of increased time in the field and coverage of areas not normally checked on count day. Some species, however, are probably truly up this winter. ALLEN’S HUMMINGBIRD (293), TURKEY VULTURE (77), RED-SHOULDERED HAWK (62), RED-TAILED HAWK (147), NUTTALL’S WOODPECKER (112), PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER (4, tie), VERMILION FLYCATCHER (9, certainly expanding and breeding on the coast), TROPICAL KINGBIRD (3, tie), CASSIN’S KINGBIRD (371), AMERICAN CROW (9260), RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET (352), HOUSE WREN (72), WESTERN BLUEBIRD (222), PHAINOPEPLA (22, influx this winter), SCALY-BREASTED MUNIA (153, increasing and spreading), ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER (348), NASHVILLE WARBLER (3, tie), BLACK-THROATED GRAY (14), and WILSON’S WARBLER (16).

Selected species notably down this year (2020 count | 10-year mean): BONAPARTE’S GULL (25 | 120), HEERMANN’S GULL (126 | 441), GREATER SCAUP (13 | 212), PACIFIC LOON (58 | 408), HORNED LARK (154 | 292), EUROPEAN STARLING (565 | 1011), LARK SPARROW (1 | 5.7, this species just barely hangs on inside the circle), BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD (10 | 140 – lack of landfill access?), SUMMER TANAGER (3 | 6.4).

CALIFORNIA QUAIL, always a target in recent years, was right at the 10-year average (11 | 11.1) but dramatically below the long-term average of 145. The high count for this species is 1029, the low is 2. Rice Canyon and Cabrillo National Monument are about the only expected locations for this species in the circle anymore.

Notable misses (number of previous CBCs with that species out of 67): RING-NECKED DUCK (63), MEW GULL (66 – only the 2nd year we’ve missed this one), and TRICOLORED BLACKBIRD (62 – no Otay Landfill access). A handful of birds were likely around but just MIA or found after the count: BLACK SCOTER, MOUNTAIN PLOVER, GREATER PEWEE, WESTERN KINGBIRD, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, and AMERICAN REDSTART.

Finally, in terms of non-countable exotics, we recorded: AMERICAN FLAMINGO (1), LILAC-CROWNED PARROT (3), RED-MASKED PARAKEET (1), BLACK-THROATED MAGPIE-JAY (3), SWINHOE’S WHITE-EYE (5), and PIN-TAILED WHYDAH (1).

A complete list, with number of individuals seen, of the 220 countable species seen on the count are below in the following format: common name | 10-year average* | 67-year average** | number of counts recording this species, including 2020.

*2010-2019, **1963-2019. All averages are rounded to whole numbers, so most 0 values should be interpreted as <0.5.

For instance, we recorded 8 Snow Geese this year, the 10-year average is 4, the 67-year average is 2, and we’ve recorded this species on 37 counts.
