Pectoral Sandpiper, etc. - San Dieguito Dust Devil Ponds

King, Dan

There was a worn adult Pectoral Sandpiper at the San Dieguito Dust Devil ponds early this morning, August 11.  The bird was feeding in the shallow section in the northwest corner of the main impoundment.

Shorebird diversity and numbers have picked up considerably at this location over the past few days or so, with today's menu - in addition to the Pectoral Sandpiper - including a dozen Black-necked Stilts, a bunch of Killdeers, probably 10 Semipalmated Plovers, a couple dozen each of Least and Western Sandpipers, Long-billed Dowitchers (6 faded adults), Short-billed Dowitchers (2 fresh juvs), Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs (with 4 of the latter), a single Willet, and a single Whimbrel.
