CQ WW160 SSB Results #Contest

Marty Meyers

Dear club members,

Ed N5JJI, Starr KI5SC, Brad N5PBP, and Marty W5MRM had a good time operating this contest from the club station Friday night. We put together a pretty good score for working 12 hours total. Conditions were pretty good and the noise floor was low. No static crashing or anything of the sort. Here is the output from my submission to 3830 scores. If anyone else worked the contest please to put "South Texas DX and Contest Club" in your cabrillo. If we have three or more logs they will get counted for the club competition.

Hello Ed,

1. do you plan in operation all night, both nights?
The current plan is to operate all night, both nights. If the first night is a bust due to conditions or something else we will reconsider what to do for the second night.
2. is there a bed in the back of the shack?
Yes, there is a bunk. Just bring a pillow and a sleeping bag or blanket.
3. do you need any more help (operators)
I will personally yield to others that want to operate. I want to make sure that club members have an opportunity to work the contest and run contacts. I think there is plenty of time for as many ops as want to operate.
4. is there a coffee pot?
There is a Keurig K-cup machine. There is also a microwave oven.

Ed,

Brad is slated to come out Friday evening and will likely be staying until around Midnight. I believe Starr and I will be there most of the time both nights. You are welcome to come out at anytime. Is there are particular day/time you are looking at coming out?

Sounds good Ed! I'll update you once I find out if anyone else is interested after the meeting on Tuesday.

It's supposed to be cool but dry this coming weekend. Hopefully the weather continues to cooperate through the end of the week.

Anyone else interested? Let me know.

Dear Club Members,

Before you know it the CQ WW 160 will be upon us. We are looking to see if there are any club members that are interested in putting together an effort from the club station in Bandera. 160m is a night time band so the idea would be to run the contest starting Friday evening through Saturday morning and then again Saturday evening through Sunday morning.

This is an event that we have traditionally run from the club station making use of our 160 meter loop. We tend to do well in this contest when conditions are good and when we have operators to cover the long overnight shifts. A few of us have run this thing solo but it's more fun and less painful as a multi-op!

Official Dates and times are:
2200Z February 21 - 2200Z Feb23
We will likely run the contest 6PM-8AM each night (Friday and Saturday)

If you are interested please post here or contact me directly.

Attracting new members

Brad Peace

From time to time the discussion has centered how do we attract new members or how do we get people interested in ham radio.  Did you know that NISD offers Adult and Community Education Classes?  They take suggestions for classes to offer and have several categories such as "Technology".  One does not have to be certified nor an employee of NISD to teach the class, only pass a background check.  It may be a way to reach out to new people.  https://nisd.net/ace/view-our-class-catalog

Just a suggestion,

FT8 Mondays

Marty Meyers

Dear Club Members,

I received the following information from Ray W5RAY about a new, informal net that is being held on 2 meters. Here is the info:

The North Texas Microwave Society is holding an FT-8 informal net on 2 meters (144.174 USB) starting about 7:30 p.m on all Monday's. There are

some folks on the air prior to that for tuning and band condition checking. This is all done to hopefully increase traffic on 2 meters.I have used it for the start to my VUCC for 2 meters.

This does require a radio setup that can do FT-8 on 2 meters. A horizontal antenna is preferred but any antenna can be used to get on the air. I use a home made horizontal loop like this:

https://www.sharkclub.org/links/antennas/2m-ssb-loop/2m-loop.htm

It is on a push up pole near 30 foot AGL. 200 plus mile long contacts are not hard with it. Some others use beams. Beams are great but not a requirement.

Their web site is: http://ntms.org/
More information on other informal nets for 222 and 432 is there.
I just wanted to get this information out to more folks to se if anybody else wants to do or can do FT-8 on 2 meters.

A great place to check FT-8 propogation is:

https://pskreporter.info/pskmap.html

Fill in the blanks: 2M, signals, sent/rcvd, anyone, blank, ft8, 15 minutes.

Last week there were two guys, one in Austin and one in Houston, that made contact with Florida during our net time. I tried but propogation did not make it for me.

73's
See you on the bands.
