After two misses late afternoon, this morning a little after 8am Kimya Lambert and I saw and heard at least ten birds in trees adjacent to the large parking area (38.626447,-121.248896) at the Gold River Discovery Center on Poker Flat Dr and Roaring Camp Dr. They were very loud and we heard them before parking.
As we watched they flew to trees closer to Poker Flat and drifted by a few here and there to the west, toward Gold Country Blvd. Fortunately, Maureen and Bea arrived before they left. Turns out, there were at least 18 grosbeaks.
In 25 years I had only detected this species twice in Sacramento County as calling flybys, so this was a treat getting to watch them for several minutes. Based on three visits and other reports, seems like late afternoon is not your best bet. Chris Conard Sacramento --please excuse this brief message sent with my phone
I saw a female Evening Grosbeak in Oroville today, and I know there have been several all around Chico lately.
Seems to definitely be some kind of movement into the valley.

Sylvia Wright Penn Valley (Nevada County) Last week at Cronan Ranch south of Cool, I had a brief glimpse of 8 birds fly by, and my reaction was Evening Grosbeak! I spent some time trying to relocate them and never re-found them, but can’t imagine what else they could have been. Stocky birds the size of starlings, three were bright yellow and the rest paler, but all with flashing white in the wings. I decided not to put them on the eBird list - it was too quick to be 100% sure, but seriously considered it. Again, can’t imagine what else they could have been. Hi folks,
See below for details and a map link to the location. This might be of wider interest. I'm not aware of such consistent Sacramento County Evening Grosbeak reports as those of the last week+. At least not in the last quarter century. Chris Conard Sacramento --please excuse this brief message sent with my phone ---------- Forwarded message

We were driving towards Hazel, about a mile from Roaring Camp, when I spotted these two EVGR feeding in a Chinese pistache in the center divider on Gold Country. We pulled over on a side street, walked over, and they put on a great show! Watched for about 20 minutes before they flew off. Yellow body, white secondaries, black wings, head and tail, and a bright yellow supercilium."
