Re: Freight Connections & Junction Points

DAVID CURREY

Jim,

That is a good question.  I'll try to define those terms, but I'm not 100% sure I'm correct, but this is how I think of them being.

A junction is:
  • where two railroads or rail lines (conceivably more) cross each other, and may or may not have connecting tracks for interchange.
  • where one railroad or rail line connects with another, and may or may not have connecting tracks for interchange.
A freight connection (interchange) is:
  • a track that has connections to at least two railroads or rail lines, and there may not technically be a junction.  For instance, there could be parallel railroads next to each other that have a connecting track not meant for trains to cross between the railroads, but for cars to be parked for interchange purposes.
A junction or freight connection doesn't have to be between two different railroads, but can be between two rail lines of the same railroad.  In some cases, operations at the junction or connection for a single railroad are treated just like they were separate railroads.

I'm studying the Texas Central RR (1910) and the Official Railway Equipment Registry shows 11 Freight Connections & Junction Points. Only one of these is not a junction with another line so I'm assuming this would be a freight connection.  Can someone define the difference between a freight connection and a junction point? I'm thinking that a junction point most likely is also a freight connection but a solid definition would be most appreciated.

[RepowerAndRegear] NWSL is alive

Rick Jones

I just received this message via the Repower & Regear group. Very good news if true, and I currently have no reason to doubt it. I was beginning to doubt I would ever receive the gearboxes and wheelsets that I ordered back in March.
I just checked the NWSL web site and this message in on the main page, so excellent news for any of use looking to repair or upgrade our stuff.

Just got this through the HOn3 grapevine...

"Dave here, and I have good news. NWSL released the following today:

========
NorthWest Short Line Press Release
For Immediate Release

NorthWest Short Line is pleased to announce that the entire line has been acquired by an NWSL employee, effective September 3rd, 2019. All existing back orders will be filled, and NWSL will be open to new orders as soon as the new websites are rolled out; the primary website nwsl.com <http://nwsl.com/>??will carry forward as the primary contact point. The line is expected to carry forward largely unchanged although the company will no longer offer phone support. NWSL will be headquartered in Kila, Montana, located near Kalispell, and the new address is PO Box 219, Kila, MT 59920. Email contact is through the website."

This is definitely good news!

I stopped at Michael's this afternoon to look for something and
found they are having a big sale today and tomorrow (Friday & Saturday).
The items I found that may be of interest to you are the craft storage
boxes for 50% off (everybody needs more storage for small parts) and the
artist paint brushes for 40% off (everybody needs a good variety of
brushes for painting and weathering and decaling). Just thought I'd give
everyone the heads up. There's much more on sale, including artist
paints, but I thought these two items would be of most interest to modelers.

Thanks for the heads up, Rick! I will have to check out the supply of brushes. Could always use more!

FYI: Microcontroller Clinic

Rick Jones

I'll be giving my clinic on microcontrollers tomorrow at All Points North model railroad club in Conroe, if anybody hasn't seen this or wants to see it again. The clinic will follow the business meeting which starts at 10:30 AM, so I'll probably be starting around 11:30-12:00.

NWSL Closing Shop

Rick Jones

The owner of Northwest Short Line posted the following message on his Facebook page today:

NorthWest Short Line
This is the post I don’t want to make but the time has come. I just can’t do this without Lynda. Following is the notice I sent to all the magazines.

=======
After 60 years in business, NWSL will cease operations effective August 30th, 2019. The company will continue to take orders for in-stock products until July 1st, 2019. Closure is for personal reasons and sale of the business is not anticipated, although reasonable proposals will be considered.

Time to stock up on U-joints, tools, gears and anything else of theirs that you might have need for in the future.

Re: small swap meets

Don Formanek

Jim,

Do you know that San Jacinto Model Railroad Club members can sell their surplus at the club sales table. The club used to have a 10% commision for handeling the sales but they have done away with the commission.. NWX train club has had several swap meets, you may contact them.

List Now Active On Groups.io

Rick Jones

Just to confirm, in case some of you thought the auto-message was spam or a phishing attempt, the SJMRRC e-list has been successfully migrated to the groups.io web site. All of the previous postings have been transferred, so there won't be any breaks in threads if you respond to something old, and all of the photos that had been placed on the Yahoo groups web site.
The new e-dress to post a message is sjmrrc@groups.io. Do not use the old Yahoo e-dress. That list is dormant now. As I understand it, you don't need to go to groups.io and create an account to continue posting; having your subscription info transferred gets you posting access. To get to the photo section you will need to create a groups.io account and link it to this e-list.
