Lodi Lake

Pat Paternostro

I birded LL this morning for a couple hours.  There were still a good number of warblers throughout the park, but the best part of the walk was the return of our winter migrants.
I had FOS, Fox Sparrow, Hermit Thrush, Red-breasted Nuthatch and Sharp-shinned Hawk.
Hope everyone has a great weekend and be sure to join SJ Audubon and Sierra Clubs joint virtual meeting coming soon.  Details on our various social-media platforms.

Rich and I had a Solitary Sandpiper at the Tracy sewer ponds. Also, a HUGE group of Tree swallows were feeding on the alfalfa across the street from the ponds.

Cranes

We went out to Woodbridge Road to day to see what had changed in 3 days .Dino Cortopossi’s field is completely dry. The South Isenberg preserve the water is coming in. We made 2 stops at the south Isenbeg preserve. 14 minutes apart. 1st stop 35 cranes. 2nd stop 14 cranes. We heard only 2 cranes on Woodbridge Road. 3 days ago we saw 4 river otters in the irrigation ditch at the end of the road. Today we saw 2 coyotes in a field on our way out. Rice & alfalfa fields are harvested. Some corn fields. The only water is in the irrigation ditch & the South Isenberg Preserve. IAW it is very dry. Dave & Pat

Laurel Ave Oaks

Pat Paternostro

Friends
Hopefully all got to see the Tennessee Warbler which was at the oaks along Laurel Ave (adjacent toLodi Lake) the past couple days.
I stopped over today, and while I did not see the TEWA, there were many birds in the trees, most low to the ground giving favorable views.  Included today were:  Pacific-slope Flycatcher, Townsends Warbler, Western-wood Pewee, Orange-crowned Warbler and at least 3 BTYW.  These among the many resident birds.
Whether a camera buff, or just wanting to see these migrants up close before they head south, this location is ideal at the moment.

Tennesee Warbler and other stuff

Kurt Mize

All:

Had my FOS Yellow-rumped Warbler at Laughlin Park this morning.  FOS Lincoln’s Sparrow yesterday. Other stuff today included two Pac Slope Flycatchers and a Wilson’s Warbler. At Baxter, I had another Yellow-rumped Warbler, a Warbling Vireo, a Black-throated Gray Warbler, and a Wilson’s Warbler. Also at Baxter, had the continuing Say’s Phoebe, and two flyovers of Sandhill Cranes totalling 76 birds. On my second pass through Laughlin Park later this morning, I was greatly surprised to find another TENNESEE WARBLER!  The bird had more yellow in the face than the bird at Lodi Lake, but was otherwise similar. It was foraging low in the oaks at the southwestern corner of the park.

Good birding,

Kurt

Following my 2nd rear-ender during this pandemic (minimal damage to car and me), I was able to refind the Tennessee Warbler, which was found by David Yee earlier today. Pat Paternostro had seen it a couple of hours earlier and took pity on me after the fender-bender to help me find it. Pat found a Townsend’s Warbler, so we knew we were on the right track. Ernie Maier showed up a few minutes later. We heard the bright chip of a Yellow Warbler, then a second bird, in the two smallish topped maple trees on the residential side of the street. (I didn’t take note of the house #.) Shortly thereafter, Pat laid his eyes on the Tennessee high in the oak across from these maples, and successfully got Ernie and me on the bird. Very satisfying, and this was definitely Pat’s good deed for the day! Thanks to all who reported this bird!

Tennessee Warbler at Lodi Lake

David Yee

Birders,

There is currently a Tennessee Warbler in the Valley Oaks along Laurel Ave at Lodi Lake. It's being extremely cooperative. The warbler numbers here are really impressive this morning.

There are also lots of people.

Happy Fall,
David Yee

Cranes

Pat Croft

The cranes are here. The south preserve is being flooded. The far southwestern levee is being mowed We saw 24 cranes feeding & resting near the water. We saw 21 cranes flying over the north preserve.

The Corda Possi( I know I mispelled his name?) field is still flooded. Still lots of ibis, stilts, greater yellow legs, long billed dowitchers, Snowy & great egrets. Dave &Pat

Yard birds, 09/20/20

Jim Rowoth

So far today, I’ve had my FIRST OF SEASON White-crowned Sparrow (briefly and just one!) at my birdbath. Others of minor interest in my yard have been Pacific-slope Flycatcher and Wilson’s Warbler. I thought I might have heard the brief, faint, distant bugle of a Sandhill Crane, but just not enough to call it for sure. Glad to see that they have finally been reported this fall for Woodbridge Rd (thanks, Pat).

Good birding,

Kurt

Nothing was going on at Laughlin Park in north Stockton this morning, so I thought I’d check out Baxter Park. I’m glad I did. There was a small fallout of Neotropical migrants, including a Willow Flycatcher, a Cassin’s Vireo, two Warbling Vireos, two Yellow Warblers (a bright male and a drab female), and two Wilson’s Warblers. Although this is a relatively young park (~30 years) they had the foresight to plant a good number of Valley Oaks, which are getting to be good sized trees. With the oaks and its proximity to Pixley Creek, I expect this park to be a good spot to bird going forward.

Good birding,
Kurt
