Black Crowned Night Herons in Lincoln Creek
tim@...
I've seen one or two black crowned night herons in Lincoln Creek just about every day, for much of the day, for the past couple of weeks. I assume they are a mating pair. Yesterday, I spotted a juvenile in an oak tree nearby. I've seen them from Alexandria Place, facing west on Lincoln Creek, across the street from Lincoln High School. Sometimes they move 50 yards or so the the west. The juvenile in a big oak tree on the north side of the creek, near Alexandria.

Day Use Park Open
Pat Croft <patndavid@...>
The weather was nice. We visited the Day Use Park & Gerodot Stables. Highlights at the Day Use Park. A soaring Golden eagle that was attacked by a smaller buteo species. We saw 3 osprey, 1 swainson’s hawk, one red tailed hawk, 1 red shouldered hawk & 1 coopers hawk. Also one female common merganser. 4 american white pelicans, 4 kesterals Not many people. Mostly people fishing. 1 ranger that was disinfecting the picnic tables & benches. Gerodot’s just the 2 of us. Highlight was one tri-colored black bird, 5 yellow headed black birds, 2 female grackles. 1 forester tern. A pied billed grebe with 4 fledged young. Pat & I took advantaged of the cooler weather. It was too hot the last 4 days to travel anywhere to bird except for yard birding.

Laughlin Park today
Kurt Mize
All:
I had my FOS Willow Flycatcher at Laughlin Park this morning. Also had a Pacific-Slope Flycatcher, a Black-throated Gray Warbler, and a Western Tanager. The greatest excitement, however, came in the form of two Common Ravens mobbing a Great Horned Owl in the top of a Valley Oak! My excellent documentary photos are attached. I’ve only ever had flyover Ravens at this location before. Sadly, an Anna’s Hummingbird nest that I’ve been watching closely for several weeks has been destroyed. :( Here’s hoping their next attempt will be more successful. Good birding,

Westgate Landing
Pat Croft <patndavid@...>
Westgate Landing is open with restrictions. Day use people are restricted to the day use area of the parking lot & the levee. The camping area is closed currently to everyone. The way I understand it when the camping area is open it will be closed to all day use people. READ THE SIGNS!!!!. I did not & I heard about it. Pat & I went into the camping area. When I got nicely scolded she was on the levee. People were on the levee fishing. It costs $5 for day use people. The picnic tables can be used but with restrictions. Please read all the signs.
There are plenty of birds. The highlights was hearing both California quail & ringed-necked peasants. Seeing several Bullocks orioles & western kingbirds. Also 2 flocks of kettling swainson’s hawks. House sparrows, house finches, robins & mockingbirds abound. We saw 2 ash throated flycatchers chasing each other. Etc. See my e bird checklist. Dave & Pat

Oak Grove/Ripon plus "heads up" San Joaquin
All,
I ended up at Oak Grove/Ripon this morning. Lots of activity, but very little warbler action detected. Note: Following up on notices from John Sterling, Dan Singer, and Cliff Hawley, SJ Co birders should also be aware that May is apparently turning into an unusually good month for southeastern vagrant songbirds (esp. Kentucky and Hooded Warblers) in the Southwest and Bay Area, so be on the lookout and pay attention to any unfamiliar songs that you hear. Of course, photos and audio recordings would be great! Believe me, I had that in mind when I was rambling around Ripon this morning! Anyway, here’s my eBird report. I didn’t visit any other locations. Sage Sparrow along Flood Rd
David Yee
Dear Birders: Happy Mother's Day to all of you moms. Very early this morning there was a singing "Sage" Sparrow along Flood Rd in Eastern SJ. It was about .6 mi east of Escalon-Bellota Rd just east of the big orchard (walnuts?) on the north side of the road in a fairly big patch of various grasses and weeds that is distinctly different than the surrounding grasslands to the south. Based on the song, location, habitat, and time of year, it appeared to be a Sagebrush Sparrow rather than a Bell's. It unfortunately was very uncooperative, and after about 2 minutes I could never again relocate it after about an hour of waiting. There was a fair amount of migrant activity at this rather unseemly migrant location that included at least four Lazuli Buntings, a young male Hooded Oriole and two Wilson's Warblers, but all were on the move. So the sparrow could have moved on with them. Good and Safe Birding, David Yee Stockton

Great photos.

There are also 20 Mallard ducklings in the water hazard on the 4th green at the Brentwood Golf Course. It’s across the street from Apple Hill Park and at the end of my Deer Creek dog walk. There’s also a Killdeer on the green these last few days. A Green Heron has been hanging around there as well plus the usual suspects.
