Seawatch -- Black Scoters, 10/20/19

Paul Saraceni

Yesterday (10/20) morning during a seawatch from the south end of the Great Highway there was a nice flock of 14 BLACK SCOTERS (11 m. & 3 f.) on the water, a good number for October. There were only 2 m. present during my scan from this location on 10/18. Hopefully this portends well for a good wintering flock at this traditional location, after lower than typical numbers last winter.

Other observations of local interest:

N. Pintail 1 f. (oddly, this bird was sitting on the ocean in the middle of a flock of California Gulls)
