Local Interest - Black Skimmers, Yellow-Rumped Warblers
Two BLACK SKIMMERS were skimming at Crissy Lagoon this morning. Had my FOS CASPIAN TERN fly over as well. Despite YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER numbers generally being down in San Francisco this year, there have been higher numbers than usual at Fort Mason recently. There could easily be well over 100 there right now, with many turning into alternate plumage.

You may have seen a post about this on Pen-birds but in case you missed it, Alvaro talked about “facultative migrants”. These include such common species we see in the Bay Area like American Robins, Cedar Waxwings and Yellow-rumped Warblers. Facultative migrants don’t limit their movements to the typical spring/fall migration windows but also move around throughout the winter depending on food available. While I noted yellow-rumps at very low numbers at the end of fall and through the CBC around SF, there seemed to be a noticeable uptick in the past 4-6 weeks or so as we experienced lower than average temperatures throughout the state. Presumably these are birds coming to the immediate coast to escape the cold further inland. Dominik Mosur On Mar 11, 2023, at 12:03, David Assmann via groups.io <david_assmann@...> wrote:
