Ten duck species made yet another theme day today. I spent from 8-12 at the Sutro Baths terrace seawatching with Paul M., and for a brief time with David Assman. David appeared just in time for the highlight species of Canvasback. An earlier flock of 9 flew southwest out to sea, and a second flock of 6 was spotted on the ocean before flying south. Both appeared after Rachel’s report from Ft Funston.
Duck numbers and a few other highlights included:
Gadwall - one on the water with wigeon
American Wigeon - 2 on ocean with Gadwall, 2 south, 1 north
Northern Shoveler - 7 north, 8 on the water
Greater Scaup - multiple flocks ranging from 2- 30
Surf Scoter - low numbers on water and ranging around
Common Goldeneye - 2 north, 1 south
Mallard, Ring-necked, and Bufflehead in the baths
Red-throated Loon - 100’s
Red-necked Grebe - 1
Common Murre - high 100’s
