Re: Blackpoll

Refound Blackpoll Warbler! In the same red flowering eucalyptus at the north end of the lake.
Black line through eye, dark wings with white wing bars, streaking in front of wings. Overall light/dingy yellow. Ran into Dario Taraborelli who got photos. Amazing! Thanks again Brian!!!! Whitney

Blackpoll

A Blackpoll Warbler was in the flowering tree at the north end of North Lake in GG Park a little while ago. It fed briefly, flew to an adjacent redwood, then took off west across the road and into the pine forest.

Re: Warblers at dragonfly creek - sf presidio
Brian Fitch
Since I haven't seen any reports today, I'll mention that the Tennessee Warbler was already being viewed when I showed up mid-morning, where Adi found it yesterday. The bird eventually returned to the alders by the yellow chairs behind the nursery, where a second Tennessee joined it and associated with it closely for at least ten minutes. The second bird was a first fall female, yellow over most of the plumage, with the undertail fading to a faint yellowish white. Sibley shows a good rendition of it in his latest edition. Brian Fitch

Gray Flycatcher at Olympic Golf Course 09/07/21
basquebirder
Hi all,
This afternoon, Augie Kramer and I were visiting a friend living in the apartments overlooking the golf course off of John Muir Dr., near Vista Grande canal, and from their balcony we heard a 'whit' and saw a pale flycatcher. After getting the scope on it, we learned it was a Gray Flycatcher! The bird was hanging out on the backside of the center of the complex in the golf course, near a dirt mound with brushy plants around. Unfortunately, I don't know how chaseable this bird will be. Perhaps accessing the backside of the western end of the building and looking through the fence may yield views. The bird kept going deeper into the golf course and disappeared. Here is a link to the eBird checklist with poor photos: https://ebird.org/checklist/S94356788 Cheers, Cédric Duhalde

Pointed out by Rudyard Wallen - this must be an immature female or there wouldn't be white edging to the fresh wing feather.

Hope this isn’t too far off-topic. That guy might have been looking for a place to release a Common Quail, as opposed to one of our native California Quail. Common Quail are bred in captivity and are sometimes released by Buddhists as part of a religious ceremony that involves freeing captive animals. Common Quail are a small old-world species that are in the Pheasant family. They usually don’t survive long in our parks (but I guess that isn’t the point of the ceremony). It would strike me as very odd if he were releasing a California Quail - what business would he have having one in captivity in the first place, and why release it at all? If it’s a Common Quail I wouldn’t worry about it. If it’s a California Quail, which have been completely extirpated from the city, first by development and then later by feral cats, I would notify SF Rec and Parks, since it wouldn’t survive long in Yosemite Marsh either. My two cents. Aaron Maizlish
