Arctic Tern @ Wave Organ & Gannet offshore

Max Laubstein

Hey All,
This morning I spotted an Arctic tern with an apparent bill deformity roosting on the beach by the wave organ as I departed the marina aboard an Oceanic society boat.  Upon returning around 5, the bird was still visible, foraging around the entrance to the marina around (37.8077327, -122.4404919).  As of 5:42, i am still seeing the tern.  I’ll attach photos ASAP to the eBird list.  Also of note, today a few miles east of SEFI the Northern Gannet was flying due east towards the mainland, so maybe it will show up somewhere on the coast.  ...and, an ashy storm-petrel and large numbers of cassin's auklets and tufted puffins were great as well.

The Yellow-headed Blackbird continues, today right at the penguin statue east of the concrete bridge.

Pac Golden on Ocean Beach 8/22

Logan Kahle

Woke up on Ocean Beach at Noriega this morning after some festivities to 4 American Avocets and a molting PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER. The plover seemed very flighty and took off to the south with 2 Whimbrel but it may have landed. A fine collection of other shorebs including a godwit, 8 whimbrel, a semi plover, and 4-500 sanderlings. It is low tide right now and the beach is relatively deserted but as those change I suspect the Plover will bail if it hasnt already. I didnt even get to check the snowy flock or much of the beach so any chasers could have another goody in store. Enjoyf the VAGRANT WEATHER!!!

Farallon Webcam Birds

Alan Hopkins

There was a lot of migrant activity seen from the Farallon Webcam "East Landing View" this morning: Western Kingbird 2, flycatcher sp, Hermit Warbler, Townsend's Warbler, Black-throated Gray Warbler, Wilson's Warbler and Western Tanager. I think Cedar Waxwings just came in. Sorry I don't know how to change the view from a phone.

Fort Mason Garden Community - Black-chinned Hummingbird

richard s. cimino

At 12:00 PM today Friday, August 20, 2021I briefly observed a male Black-chinned Hummingbird in the northeast corner of the garden area.

The Hummingbird appeared from the gardens touching the plum tree, then explored the Bottlebrush before flying off.

It appeared to have gone back into the garden area, we searched for 45 minutes without success of relocating.

Brown Thrasher continues @ Dragonfly Creek, 8/20

Paul Saraceni

At 1:30 I briefly observed the continuing BROWN THRASHER @ Dragonfly Creek. It was in the location where Daniel Scali first found it on 8/15 — just upstream from the lower bridge, in the area with reddish-leaved “snowberry” bushes. I first noticed it when it flew into an adjacent dark-leaved tree where it perched midway up in the interior of the tree for about a minute. Then it dropped down into the low reddish-leaved bushes, gave several harsh calls, then disappeared.

2 Warbling Vireos, a Wilson’s Warbler, and a House Wren and Bewick’s Wren were near that specific location as well.

Weather good for tomorrow outing to Pioneer Canyon

Alvaro Jaramillo

All,

There are a few spots left for the trip tomorrow in case anyone is interested. Swell is widely spaced (10 seconds) as it is today, conditions today and tomorrow are similar and the weather buoy is showing good weather offshore today. There may be a bit of a south wind tomorrow, but that will not impede getting offshore. We will be aiming to the area where the petrels (Cook’s and Hawaiian) were found last Saturday, where many storm-petrels were, and where we will also be in a warmer water situation that may be the reason the Pterodroma petrels are here.

Sutro & East Wash

Brian Fitch

Jaegers are finally increasing on the ocean at Sutro, as a minimum of five Parasitics were simultaneously attacking one of the many Elegant Terns.  There were likely more individuals, but most were distant and hard to keep track of.  A Pomerine made a short visit and harassed several Heermann's Gulls while in sight.  At least two different Herrmann's showed strong white wing patches, and one juv Ruddy Turnstone was on the North Rock with its cousins.  A Wandering Tattler was in the tide pool right below the terrace offering nasal groove views.

Later in the morning, the East Wash below the Legion of Honor was active with a few regular migrant species, mainly tanagers, grosbeaks, and flycatchers.  Wilson's was the only warbler.

Local Interest - More migrants at Fort Mason

David Assmann

Today was even more active than yesterday, with an ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER and a BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER in the same tree in the lower Battery.  Another ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER and a WILLOW FLYCATCHER were behind the General's House. At least four WESTERN TANAGERS and a HOODED ORIOLE were in the Battery (also an ASH-THROATED - probably the same one as in the lower Battery). Also saw 3 YELLOW WARBLERS, 3 WILSON'S WARBLERS, and a MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER (in the garden).

Rose-breasted Grosbeak appeared briefly at 4:45 pm, trying to relocate and grab a photo. Pulse of migrants include 2 gnatcatchers, Western Tanager, Black-headed Grosbeak, and a possible Willow Flycatcher. Thanks Logan for the report!
