Re: Redheads at lake Merced

David Armstrong

Redhead pair continuing at 5:15.

Now looking at the previously reported White-tailed Kite, currently perched on top of a cypress right across from the Lakewood Apartments, a bit south from the gun range.

Great find thanks Yvette! The male in breeding continues south of the concrete bridge, currently in the middle of the water.

Wagtail subspecies/age/sex

Peter Pyle

Hi all -

I've been asked by several of you about the subspecies/age/sex of the wagtail present yesterday in Quartermaster Reach. I had designated it an adult female lugens ("Black-backed Wagtail," a separate species until 2005). Based on further research and analysis (especially of the flight-shot taken by Joachim) I still think lugens is the best designation but have dropped back to age/sex unknown as first-spring male may not be eliminated.

I have added some more discussion on this to my eBird checklist from yesterday
https://ebird.org/checklist/S88221046

White Wagtail is a challenging (=fun) species to identify to subspecies, age, and sex. Great bird, in any case.

Cheers, Peter

Wagtail marina now

Josiah Clark

After a little bit of search Cédric relocated the wagtail again over by the yacht club, just across from the Heron breeding area by the first slips and a small boardwalk coming down to the beach. We have kept our distance and been watching the bird for a little while.

Hi all,

Sorry for the late post (I posted to the yahoo groups...doh!) Mozes Alvarez found a (black-backed) White Wagtail yesterday morning at Crissy Field and posted it to iNaturalist today. Max Benningfield alerted a few of us to the post who went down and refound the bird briefly this morning. It flushed about 15 minutes ago but very well may return (or go elsewhere like the lagoon or yacht harbor). It was in the far east end at the Quart Master Reach Marsh new restoration site. This is a first for the city and third for sf county.

Go down mozes way down to crissy field!!

Logan
