McLaren Park Migrants
Hi Birders, At least 3 Ash-throateds flycatching at the ebird location Middle School Canyon, adjacent to Vis Valley middle school. Also a weeting Willow Flycatcher and a Lark Sparrow. I’ve been sitting in one spot on the hill so haven’t seen if everyone’s still around. Think I heard some Oriole chatter too. Good B-ing, Dan

Pileated Woody at El Polin
Michael Lombardo
Hi all, Saw a Pileated Woodpecker at El Polin today, around 11AM. Actually, heard the cackling dude first, then saw him. He appeared as soon as I arrived, surveying bare trees on the bluff above the restrooms. He was coming from the south, heading northwest, perhaps back towards more typical environs? Sharing in case it stirs envy. (Sorry for the bad pics. Urgency caused a shaky hand.)

Misc. Sightings - 05.30.20; Summer Tanager; Townsend's Solitaire , YR Warbler
H Cotter
Following the showers overnight and this morning I birded a few locations including Battery Godfrey and Lincoln Park/ Lands End . Battery Godfrey highlights included a calling Summer Tanager- eventually confirmed by Paul Saraceni over at Fort Scott adjacent. Also had a OS Flycatcher and a couple of Lazuli Bunting. Lincoln Park/ Lands End had a Townsend's Solitaire west of the west wash and below the VA Hospital. Also present was a continuing singing Audubon's Yellow-rumped Warbler at Fort Miley East and a continuing flock of approx 25 Red Crossbill at the east wash. I was then able to see the Summer Tanager that Paul had confirmed at Fort Scott in the Presidio. Hugh

Summer Tanager @ Ft. Scott, 5/30/20
Paul Saraceni
A 1st-spring male SUMMER TANAGER was observed today @ the north end of Ft. Scott in the Presidio, at least thru 1:00 PM.
The tanager was making a circuit among the cypress trees including those just north of the baseball field to those across the parking lot and on the other side of the plastic-covered dirt pile, ranging east into the trees near the Presidio Log Cabin.
Hugh Cotter heard a few call notes this morning from near Battery Godfrey and suspected this species, but did not see or further hear the bird then. I headed over later and as soon as I stepped out of my car near the baseball field @ 11:30 AM I heard the burry song that sounded like this species. The bird continued to move from tree to tree, singing, but hidden. Eventually I was able to get a visual to confirm the ID, and when Hugh returned we were both able to get documenting photos. It's a splotchy young male showing reddish-orange head, throat, and undertail coverts, mustard-yellow belly, and greenish on the back. Aspects of its song are robin-like or grosbeak-like. It only gave a pit-tuk call a few times during the observation period. It was still singing when we departed around 1:00.
Also in the area were 1 White-throated Swift, 5 W. Bluebirds, and 3 Hooded Orioles.
Earlier this morning I birded the northern portion of Ft. Funston for a couple of hours but could only find a single migrant there -- a calling Pac.-slope Flycatcher. There is a nice population of Bewick's Wrens there, with at least 5 or 6 singing birds present. During a brief seawatch from the bluff I observed 1 RHINOCEROS AUKLET flying N.

Duboce Park Ash-throated
Brian Fitch
During our morning neighborhood walk, my wife and I watched an Ash-throated Flycatcher fly nearly the length of the park heading east and out of sight. A first for this site, and so close to making it on my house list. Totally missed Oscar's White Pelicans, but there were Western Wood-Pewee's in Buena Vista and Corona Heights, while CH also had a Western Tanager and an unseen singing grosbeak. No Brewer's that we could detect. Brian Fitch

Re: Male Scarlet tanager question
I met up with Rachel Lawrence the last week of January this year to ogle at it. It had been there a couple of weeks before that. So safe to say most of January 2020.

There has been an adult male Summer Tanager at Glen Canyon Park for the last two winters. There were a few weeks in January where he was coming into a bee hive next to the trail to feed. When I went to see him on 1/29/2020 he was at the hive. That is actually this year (!), it just feels like last year. Or maybe it feels like many years ago before the shutdown. The bird was last reported on eBird at the beginning of April. I was told that it was sometimes seen around the neighborhood during the winter. There was also a second city record Scarlet Tanager seen last fall, but that one was at the SF Zoo. That might be the source of confusion. Take care, Aaron

Male Scarlet tanager question
Pamela Llewellyn
Last year there was an adult male Scarlet tanager hanging out in Glen Canyon Park. He stayed for at least a couple of weeks. He was feeding on a bee hive. I can't find this information in eBird. Does anyone remember the dates that he was there? Pamela Llewellyn CPESC, QSD, QSP Stormwater Professional 510-316-8932

More details on the Chestnut-Sided Warbler at Fort Mason
David Assmann
The CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER seen at Fort Mason this morning was an adult male in alternate plumage. It was first heard singing in a tree on the west side of the garden and then moved to the north side of the garden, first in the plum trees, where it was seen from outside the fence, and then into the avocado tree, before heading to the east side of the garden. Because the garden is still closed to the public, this bird is hard to photograph. A BULLOCK'S ORIOLE was also seen on the west side of the garden, and a YELLOW WARBLER was behind the General's House.
