South-end seawatch, 2/7/16

Paul Saraceni

I did a seawatch again this morning (7-10 AM) from the south end of the Great Highway.  Conditions started out a little hazy towards the horizon but cleared when the east winds picked up and a big swatch of the ocean surface went glassy.

At 7:20 a flock of 27 CACKLING GEESE flew S high over the ocean, then turned E and crossed over Ft. Funston heading towards Lake Merced.

Other observations of local interest:

Surf Scoter 60+
Black Scoter 14 m. & 6 f. (on the water just beyond the surf line)
Com. Loon 2
Pacific Loon 1
Red-thr. Loon 70+
Whimbrel 10
Marbled Godwit 1
Willet 1
ANCIENT MURRELET 2 (on the glassy water)
Murrelet sp. 2 (briefly observed on the water before diving and disappearing)

Harbor Porpoise 2
Cal. Sea Lion 1
