South-end Sea watch, SF, 12/24/13

Paul Saraceni

This morning Hugh Cotter, Mark Eaton and I got out for a Count Week sea watch from the south-most parking lot of the Great Highway, 7:00-9:00 AM.  Very flat seas, light variable winds, some haze. The flat seas encouraged many birds (Red-throated Loons, Common Murres, et al.) to set down on the ocean not very far out, but nothing unusual joined the feeding flock.

Observations of local interest:

N. PINTAIL 13 (flock flying N)
Am. Wigeon 5 (flying with Pintail flock)
Surf Scoter 20+
White-winged Scoter 3 (in flight)
Black Scoter 15 m., 7 f.
Common Goldeneye 3 f. (flying N together)
Common Loon 6
Pacific Loon 3
Red-thr. Loon 400+
Horned Grebe 1 (on the ocean)
Brown Pelican 16
Heermann's Gull 1 ad.
Common Murre 150+

Bottlenose Dolphin 3-5
