Description:

Please Join at the WGVU on October 10th at noon for a presentation on ATSC 3.0 Presented by Michael Guthrie. Michael is a Technology Specialist with Harmonic.

The transition from ATSC 1.0 to 3.0 will involve several stages.   The need to retain 1.0 service and the transition from current formats (SD, HD 720 and 1080i) to newer, higher quality formats including 1080p, HDR and UHD will complicate the management of transmission resources.  The new formats, and other new ATSC 3.0 features and services are likely to appear piecemeal.  Efficient use of bandwidth will require flexible utilization of both the ATSC 3.0 and ATSC 1.0 bandwidth, managed across multiple business entities and across multiple transmission paths.  New types of sources will need to be included in the transmission at any time, and may originate from any station within the community.   OTT delivery may be necessary for some of these events, and or dynamic management of the transmission system. We will discuss the likely course of this evolution and some possible solutions for achieving efficiency and flexibility in shared transmission systems.

Please RSVP so we know how many to expect.

Mark

Subject: Chapter 102 October Meeting - Date & Location Change!

Please Join at the WGVU on October 10th at noon for a presentation on ATSC 3.0 Presented by Michael Guthrie. Michael is a Technology Specialist with Harmonic for over 20 years.  He has over 35 years experience in the broadcast industry in Engineering, Product management, Sales and Marketing in numerous companies including ABC Television, Solid State Logic, McCurdy Radio, Telex Communications, DiviCom and Harmonic.  Michael joined DiviCom  (DiviCom was acquired by Harmonic in 2000) as an ATSC evangelist.  Since then he has worked with customers on Broadcast, Satellite Distribution, Direct to Home Satellite, Telco IPTV, and Over the Top Internet Video projects

Some may be transitory: a special UHD transmission of a major sporting event for example.  OTT delivery may be necessary for some of these events, and or dynamic management of the transmission system. We will discuss the likely course of this evolution and some possible solutions for achieving efficiency and flexibility in shared transmission systems.

Last October we had an ATSC 3.0 presentation, but I’ve been told this presentation isn’t a duplicate of the last but will obviously have some of same info.

Please RSVP so we know how many to expect.

Attached is a map for the GVSU Pew Campus.

I have arranged for Parking in the Fulton Lot under the S-Curve.  If there is a gate attendant please tell them you are here for the SBE meeting at WGVU. If there is no attendant pull forward and the gate will open. Parking in any other area may result in a “gift” from the University on your wind shield of your car.

The WGVU studios are located in the Eberhard Center Building in Room 117 (on the river side by the elevators).

If you have any questions please ask.

Thanks,

Mark

Practical Cybersecurity for the Broadcast Station

Cybersecurity is a complex topic and even more daunting task when implementing safeguards within a broadcast facility.  This presentation will provide practical, implementable cybersecurity precautions for the broadcast station. Specific topics will include an overall understanding of cybersecurity threats, cybersecurity principals and a step-by-step infrastructure implementation guide.

Wayne Pecena, CPBE, 8-VSB, AMD, DRB, CBNE Texas A&M University KAMU FM & TV

Case Histories in Lightning Protection and Grounding

This presentation will look at two separate installations, one on a mountain/high hill, one in the lowlands and the problems experienced with each, and how to overcome them.  We will  talk about the physics of a lightning strike and the best ways to help ensure that the bulk of the energy goes around our equipment, not through it. There will be discussion on how to improve existing sites, as well as optimizing grounding layout for new installations.

Jeff Welton, CBRE, Nautel
Microwave STL's - Upgrading to ATSC 3.0

Microwave STL's (Studio to Transmitter Links) have been in operation for many years at the majority of broadcast television stations supporting connection from the television Studio to the broadcast transmitter site. Several variations of microwave systems have been manufactured to enable transmission of different television signal formats including NTSC analog, dual carrier NTSC/ATSC 1.0 to support the DTV transition and, digital only supporting ATSC 1.0 for today's DTV broadcast signals. Existing digital microwave systems have supported ASI and SMPTE-310M digital baseband signals and now there are considerations to be made for ATSC 3.0 with its IP format. Microwave STL requirements to support ATSC 3.0 and their hardware infrastructure will be discussed along with what considerations should be made to upgrade your STL to support the new ATSC 3.0 format while keeping the existing ATSC 1.0 signals on the air if necessary. Microwave antennas, waveguide, data rates, modulations, path analysis, opportunistic data and frequency allocations will be topics of discussion along with new industry solutions.

Kevin Dennis, Regional Sales Director SAF North America

Spurs - Your Fault of Not?

One of the least concerning, yet most immediate requirements in broadcasting is spurious emission compliance.  It's never a problem until it's a problem.  The opportunity for spurious emissions to occur will increase as repack continues.  This presentation will explore several spur measurement techniques to identify the sources, strategies to mitigate the interfering signals and considerations for preventing them during the initial RF System design.

Sean Edwards, Director of RF Engineering Shively Labs

Best Practices for Modern Transmitter Remote Control

The presentation will cover: transmitter control and monitoring access modes (GPIO versus serial versus SNMP), monitoring and controlling mission critical equipment besides the transmitter, and reducing false alarms, reducing avoidable site trips.  John will use real-world examples and you will learn how to work smarter, not harder.

 John Ahern, President, Davicom

Workbench Tips

The author of Radio World's popular column and Telos Alliance Western Regional Radio Sales Manager, John Bisset, will bring a combination of tips from his column and discuss the conversion to AoIP and what AES67 means to you. In this session, you will learn useful tips to do your job more efficiently as well as other things to consider when upgrading an analog facility to AoIP.

 John Bisset, Telos Alliance
