S-Scale-ProgreSSive S-Scale-ProgreSSive@groups.io

This group is for the high fidelity modeler in 1/64 (S) scale and is for the sharing of methods and techniques of achieving the chosen level of accuracy.

If you are interested in S scale and you understand and appreciate the difference between toy trains and realistic scale models, and you are a scale-oriented modeler whose interest is in achieving a higher level of accuracy and realism on both rolling models and layouts, then this group is for you.

We represent the FUTURE of S scale, not the past. To that end, we focus on building realistic 'scale' modeling, not collecting toy trains. In general, we define 'scale' into three categories - Semi-Scale, Fine-Scale and Proto-Scale. These categories deal primarily with track and wheel standards, but can also be applied to all aspects of models in such areas as detail parts and paint schemes, and to layouts in the areas of design and scenery.

Code 110 (semi-scale), code 88 (fine-scale) and code 87 (proto-scale) tolerances are used for track construction whether using manufactured track or hand-laying, and the most commonly used rail sizes are code 100 and code 83, with larger or smaller codes being used where prototypically accurate.

Couplers such as Kadee's #802 and #808, SHS's/MTH's #01295 and Sergent Engineering's proto-scale couplers are the standards used by modelers. Other options are American Models' #CPL600 dummy couplers, Kadee #5 and #148 and Walthers' Proto Max which are often used by both standard and narrow gauge modelers. Older couplers such as the Devore, and Wiseman's Link-And-Pin couplers may also be in use where prototypically accurate.

Discussions concerning conversions of early-generation S scale products (such as those produced by American Flyer/Gilbert, and recent offerings from Lionel) to a more realistic state are permitted, but all other discussions about these products are STRICTLY OFF TOPIC! The only exception to this rule is 'New Product Reviews' wherein members may inform the group of the positives or negatives of new products from these manufacturers.

Non-retail item sale postings are welcome.
