October 1, 2020

Introducing RigPi 2, a major upgrade to the popular MFJ-1234 RigPi Remote Station Server. The new RigPi 2 software uses the latest Buster operating system compatible with the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B and earlier, including the 3 B+.  RigPi 2 will be available for download on Thursday, October 8, from the MFJ web site, https://mfjenterprises.com/search?q=rigpi.

*If you purchased RigPi or RigPi software after June 30, 2020: $5.95.  Proof of purchase required.  The MFJ-1234 case for RigPi 1 is not compatible with the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B due to connector locations.  MFJ will release an updated RigPi soon, along with a new case and microSD RigPi 2 image. See MFJ-1234B

Loaded with over 30 major new features and updates, RigPi 2 provides remote CW keying over the Internet, support for over 27 new radios, PTT and frequency control from the Contour Shuttle controller and Flic Bluetooth switches, antenna switching, and power amp control. Connect a web cam to RigPi and watch your radio in the RigPi browser on your phone or tablet.

More details and the updated Help file will be available for download ahead of launch.  Watch this forum for details.

Martin F. Jue, K5FLU and President and Founder of MFJ Enterprises, Inc. says "MFJ has enjoyed our RigPi venture into 2020 and have been proud to have helped support this unique endeavor.  Howard Nurse, W6HN, has done an incredible amount of work in getting RigPi 2 ready and it is a wonderful contribution to the ham radio community throughout the world."

This should be very interesting and fun to download and start to use.

Howard, is there any way to get the settings, macro and so from the early version in to the new or do I have to do everything from the beginning because there are so much new things in V 2?

Jan / SM5SUH

Hi Jan,

You are right, RigPi 2 is new from the ground up.  It is necessary to re-enter all data.  I recommend using a 32GB card for the new image and keeping your old card as it is.  If you need to confirm any original settings you can revert to the old card.

RigPi 2 can save and restore macros which will ease the transition in the future.

Congats on the launch!

Do you happen to know when MFJ will move forward and offer this as a Pi 4? It’s understood that a new housing would be needed.

Hi Howard

Thank you for the news on the update which sounds really good.

Just to confirm, is it only possible to download the software as part of a complete OS or is the RSS programme available individually to install on one's own existing Raspberry Pi system compilation?

73 de Roger.

Hi Roger,

On October 8 you will be able to download the complete RigPi 2.0 image.  This includes the Buster operating system, updated versions of most programs, and the latest RigPi software.  You can use this image on an existing RigPi or build your own if you own a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B or earlier.  The cost for the download is $29.95 unless you have purchased RigPi or an image/microSD card since June 30.  The download price in that case is $5.95.

I think this was discussed previously but I forget the conclusion.

is there any difference in performance between a 3B+ and a 4?

If so, I’ll be interested in a new case as well.

Good news on the upgrade pricing for recent purchases.

Regarding the WebCam - a generic one from like Logitech?

Hi Don,

If I compare the MFJ 1234 (Pi 3B) with a Pi 4 GB on SSB mode. There are a small difference but not that big.

Hi Don,

I ran an experiment, comparing the time to update the FCC database in RigPi on a Raspberry Pi 3 B+ against a Raspberry Pi 4 B with 4GB RAM.  The RPi3 took 4 mins 55 sec, the RPi4 took 2 min 5 sec.

The test included downloading the roughly 100MB database, unzipping, and populating over 100K records in 3 databases.

Hi Don,

Just about any webcam will work.  One Beta test ran into a problem with one he purchased, then went to an older Logitech.  I've tested with a Logitech QuickCam up to the new Brio and all work fine.
