Try setting the radio frequency manually and leaving off the freq? bit. The
gateway interface doesn’t support sending commands to the radio.

The PI96K is connected to linbpq, correct? If so, shouldn't you be using the telnet transport in PAT to talk to linbpq, not the PAT ARDOP transport?

My local group is using the Raspberry PI in 24/7 use. They work ok with one caveat. We went with a gel-cel battery and diode switch from a 13.8v power supply so when the power supply glitches the

Multitude of uses,
I have tried using PI as a replacement with PI-TNC in the EOC, however the device doesn't hold up to 24/7 use.
MMDVM setup the Pi is great. I have three of these.

Here's how I've used them:
1) A few of them around the house, attached to audio amps and speakers, running Squeezelite and providing multi-zone whole house audio
2) Pi 3 (I think) running Direwolf

1 - Dual mode 220 mhz D-STAR/Analog FM repeater using a Bridgecom Repeater and UDRC
1 - Dual mode 2-meter D-STAR/Fusion Digital repeater using a Yaesu

I have 5 of them up and running. One is used as file server with an external 40 gig hard drive. Another is mounted in my garage and with a collinear array for ADS-B work. A third is my APRS I gate
