Do you mean PiFM ?

Right now, their website says no stock until March 1st, though?

I guess at least their shipping charge is reasonable. MCM quotes $10 for domestic US economy shipping, a bit steep for a $35 device.

Why can it not be installed using a installer like in Windows.

I would compare them to a DOS batch file if you know what that is. Anything that can be typed in at the command prompt can be put into a bash script.

Has someone located a source on this
side of the pond (US), that is selling the latest Raspberry
Pi 2 without jacking the price way up or charging outrageous
shipping and handling fees?  (or even has some
inventory)

Sound card question results

Ken Koch

I want to thank the folks with suggestions on sound cards.
I purchased the Tascam-100 sound card / mixer / USB.
It does not have a "#1 pin problem" and was tested to check.
At this point, it resides on an old Dell desktop / WinXP.
I hooked it to my Icom 706MkIIg and let it run, via MultiPSK,
listening on 20m with an inverted-V at 30' in JT-65 mode.
It sat there and logged countries for 2 days,
and the lowest signal logged was at -26db.
Many were below -20db, with a synch of 10.
This unit, powered by usb, sounds like a very viable,
very low-noise addition to the attachments that could be used on the Pi.
That's the next project.......
Thanks again.
Ken / n8gan.

Hi friends,
NBFM github repository is at:

You can find there both the source code and the compiled executable for Raspbian.

I'll add soon some bash scripts too.

Please, let me know how it behaves with the new Raspy2.

Good group, thanks for all the input. As the plans call for portable operation battery power is needed and a small touch screen. Trying to get rid of the laptop. I already have solar panels [ power film 20watt] .

You have 2 options
install Synaptic in a terminal type "sudo apt-get install synaptic" and
then you can install anything by checking and installing.
Or
sudo apt-get install fldigi

This does work.  As I said, Patience.  Things are getting better as we go along.

Not sure how you are setting up your sound card interface but take it from there.

You have 2 options
install Synaptic in a terminal type "sudo apt-get install synaptic" and
then you can install anything by checking and installing.
Or
sudo apt-get install fldigi

Good luck Dave.  I've just worked around it and seek out the people who are not so arrogant.  Same thing in learning about Ham Radio.  All flame emails in reply to this will be cheerfully deleted and ignored.  You know who you are.

There are answers out there it just takes patience.

I have just retired from many, many years of experience in computers, which I mention only as the source of the following observation:

When you post a question in the Windows world, everyone thinks they know more than you, and will give you detailed instructions, even if they're wrong or don't apply to your situation.

In the Linux world, everyone assumes you're an expert, or at least have extensive experience, and make suggestions like "just install it from the repository," as if you knew what the heck that was, or where it is, or how to use it.

I'm not sure WHY either of those is so, and continue to look for the middle ground!

Thanks for the observation on Linux users assuming a level of expertise in their replies to questions.
I have had a Pi sitting on the bench with accessories such as Wi-Fi and blue tooth but as I have had
a long recovery from a series of surgeries, assimilating the disparate pieces of knowledge and applying
them has been too hard.

I would love to get playing but my interest has been in radio/electronics and not specifically IT. I might
say I first used RTTY using a Vic 20 but have never felt comfortable with the programming side of things.
There would be many like me in the radio world in that we experiment by using and work back to the
deeper understanding of the underlying theory.

My eyes sparkled at the announcement of the Pi2 as it opens a new world but then came the realisation
that I hadn’t taken the first steps with an original Pi. Once the opportunity comes, I will invest in a Pi2 but I
hope that Linux documentation improves so that it is understandable by the novice. Little wonder there is
a surge in interest in the phantom that is Windows 10.

Please keep the discussions going as it is helping those of us who want to lose the confusion and simply
enjoy a Pi.

Repositories are always behind the latest release. There are several (many?) different repositories, one for each flavor of linux. Some of the packages are maintained at near current by the distro people. Many are not but must be updated by the people who maintain the software. Or at least that's my understanding.
Please remember that ALL of the people working on fl* are volunteers. Also keep in mind that while raspy is a descendant of debian nearly all debians run on Intel machines. The pi is still something of a niche. I was surprised as heck that there was a build of fldigi for the pi and even more surprised at how easy it was to build flrig.

Anyone who is running fl software should join the linuxham group in yahoo groups. The guy that writes the software hangs around there.
