If you are using LXDE (most of you will be)...

delete all the other stuff I wrote about, and then
create the file '~/.config/lxsession/LXDE/autostart'
with the contents '/bin/xastir'.

You can cut'n'paste all the following to the command line to do it in one go:-

mkdir -p ~/.config/lxsession/LXDE
echo '/bin/xastir' >> ~/.config/lxsession/LXDE/autostart
