The Hero Passenger Who Landed a Plane after His Pilot Fell Unconscious

Wed had a good flight that day, says John, whose love of aircraft stems from his years in an RAF desk job.

.

We spent the time picking out landmarks, pootling around and enjoying ourselves. Cruising at 1,500ft, their destination was Sandtoft Airfield, near Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, where they were scheduled to land at 7pm.

.

When the pilot became ill at first it seemed there was nothing to worry about and he even joked about opening the door of the aircraft, which has dual controls, so he was not sick on Johns trousers.

.

However, it quickly became obvious that this was an emergency.

.

John recalls: He suddenly said, Take control John. He threw his head back.

.

I thought he had fainted. I asked, Are you all right mate? and nudged him a few times, thinking he would come round.

.

Nothing. I felt for a pulse but there was nothing. He was cold and clammy.

.

I just thought, What do I do now? I pressed the button to speak to air traffic controllers and called, Mayday, Mayday, Mayday. It was then I realised I was going to have to try to fly the plane.

.

In his first message to the tower John sounds remarkably calm.

.

He is heard saying: I am a passenger. My pilot seems to be unconscious. I am not a pilot.

.

John had taken a passing interest in the instrument dials of the Cessna during his previous flights and was able to give his height but had no idea of his speed.

.

Asked by the controllers if he has ever flown before he replies: Negative.

.

His only way of handling the aircraft was using the steering stick, for direction and altitude, and throttle to vary speed.

.

He had to learn quickly if he was to stand a chance of getting down alive.

.

However John Cameron, the first air traffic controller to speak to John, says: This guy was in trouble. Worst case scenario was a crash. His chances of landing safely and walking away were possibly no more than 30 per cent.

.

He tried to keep John calm and focus on simple tasks.

.

John was able to circle the small airfield but the decision was taken to divert him 20 miles to the larger Humberside Airport, between Grimsby and Hull, which also has fire trucks.

.

All other flights were diverted and a Sea King search and rescue helicopter was scrambled from RAF Leconfield. Meanwhile, flying instructor Roy Murray was contacted and rushed by road to the airport to talk John down.

.

Fortunately, although the light was fading fast, the weather was fine and John could see the Humber Bridge, allowing him to change course and follow a main road to the landing strip.

.

I knew I had to stay as calm as possible otherwise I would lose everything. I wanted to live. If I panicked I was going to hit the deck.

.

A minor runway was chosen, allowing John to fly into the wind to cushion his landing, and he began his descent at 6.56pm, some 40 minutes after taking control.

In the worst rail accident in recent years, 115 passengers were killed and more than 200 injured, nearly half of them grievously, when 14 coaches of the Indore-Patna Express derailed in Kanpur early on Sunday. The tragedy could have been caused due to a rail fracture, according to sources in the Railways.

.

Four sleeper coaches of the train S1, S2, S3, S4 were badly damaged in the accident.

.

Over 150 injured people have been rushed to nearby hospitals in the area. All hospitals have been asked to be alert. More than 30 ambulances have been pressed into service, Commissioner (Kanpur Zone) Iftikharuddin said.

.

India train: Rescuers comb through mangled wreckage

BBC News

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-38047598

.

.

Rescuers are combing through mangled wreckage after a train derailed in India's northern Uttar Pradesh state.

.

At least 120 people are dead after the Indore-Patna Express derailed at 03:00 local time on Sunday (21:30 GMT Saturday), near the city of Kanpur.
The death toll could rise as workers reach the worst-hit parts of the train.

.

The cause of the crash is not known, though reports said a track fracture could be to blame.

.

Train accidents are fairly common in India, where much of the railway equipment is out of date.

.

Early on Monday the railway ministry published a list of names of injured passengers. Out of the 131 listed, 58 were said to be "grievously injured". Earlier reports quoted officials as saying more than 150 people were injured.

.

Hundreds are taking part in the rescue operation, using machines to cut through the mangled metal or using their bare hands to remove the debris, as police hold back curious onlookers from nearby villages.

.

Two carriages are completely smashed up beyond recognition. Several other carriages are hanging off the tracks precariously.
Personal effects of passengers - bags, clothes, water bottles - are strewn all over the place. I can see a woman's red dress hanging off the roof of a carriage.

.

Officials are saying that those still trapped in the wreckage are probably dead by now.

.

There are two giant cranes trying to remove carriages that have already been cleared of bodies, but it's proving difficult because they're badly damaged. I saw one carriage that was being lifted up suddenly fall to the ground - the crane could not handle it properly.
The derailment had the strongest impact on the first two carriages of the train, which crashed into each other and overturned. Most of the victims were located in these carriages.

.

According to the Indian Express the carriages were outdated and known for piling up in accidents. The report said the government had promised earlier this year to upgrade all trains.

ANKARA (Reuters) - Forty-four people were killed and 103 injured when one Iranian passenger train collided with another at a station about 150 miles (250 km) east of the capital Tehran, state media reported.

I was sleeping when the crash happened. I thought it was an air strike ... When I opened my eyes, there was blood everywhere, a hospitalized passenger told state television.

State television footage showed four derailed carriages, two of them on fire and a spokesman forIrans Red Crescent, Mostafa Mortazavi, told the semi-official Fars news agency that firefighters were trying to control the blaze.

Senior Health Ministry official later announced via Tasnim news agency that rescue operations had been completed and the final death toll was 44.

The initial investigation suggests that a mechanical failure, possibly caused by cold weather, forced the express train, operating between the cities of Tabriz and Mashhad, to stop (at Haft-Khan), Khabbaz said.

.

Tabriz state governor Rahim Shohratifar told Tasnim that the moving train had 400 passengers. It was not clear how many passengers were on the stationary train. Fars earlier reported that 100 passengers had been rescued.

Four carriages derailed and two caught fire when a train that had broken down was hit by another train.

.

The accident happened in freezing temperatures early on Friday, 250km (150 miles) east of the capital Tehran.

.

The rescue effort is being hampered by the remote location, officials say. President Hassan Rouhani has ordered an inquiry into the cause of the crash.

.

The crash occurred in Iran's northern province of Semnan, on the main line between Tehran and Mashhad in the north-east.

Every subway-riding New Yorker has an opinion about the worst line in the system. But according to the Straphangers Campaign, its the No. 5 and A trains.

.

The group on Thursday released its report ranking the performance of all 20 train lines, giving each line a MetroCard rating based on performance data.

.

The No. 5 and A lines earned a Metrocard score of $1.50.

.

Its frustrating to be a rider on the A train or the 5 train, said Jaqi Cohen, campaign coordinator for the Straphangers Campaign. Typically, you could expect your train to be delayed, to not show up on time and to break down often.

.

The A line hit the bottom of the pack due to long waits between trains, delays, and more frequent breakdowns on the old clunkers that run on the tracks, according to the report.

.

Cohen said she experiences these problems first-hand as an A train commuter.

.

Im waiting what feels like forever for the train just to show up and by the time it does, its crowded, she said.

Its a question that has bugged me for years as Ive written about the most-divisive political topic in the citys recent history, the Cincinnati streetcar. The city has seen hundreds of millions in development in its basin downtown and Over-the-Rhine over the past decade-plus, with much of it happening as the city has been planning and building the streetcar project.

.

But how much of it was actually because of the streetcar?

.

snip

.

The first part would be time-consuming but somewhat simple. Everyone who asks the city for a building permit has to state the cost of the project in order for the city to charge its fees. We looked at all of the properties directly on the line, checked to see who had received permits and added up the investments they made at least $160 million since 2012.

.

The figure isnt perfect. It doesnt include costs like property acquisition or lawyers or things that dont require permits, such as buying furniture. But using the building permit numbers guaranteed we would be conservative, and it ensured an apples-to-apples comparison amongst the different projects. One project couldnt throw in its real estate brokers fee while another did not.

.

We did not expect to have much success with the second part of the story. The streetcar project has been a political hot potato for so long that people have been reluctant to talk about it at all, let alone admit that it played a role in how they thought about their project.

.

We were wrong. Dozens of building owners, developers and lessees were willing to talk with us and be candid about whether the streetcar influenced their decision-making. Asking people allowed us to get a good sample of who was simply renovating a bathroom they would have overhauled anyway and who actively thought of the streetcar as they developed a project. The story contains a full accounting of the property owners who told us the streetcar as a factor in their development decisions, their rating for how much of a factor it was and the value of their investments. There's even a searchable database of all of the responses we received that you can check out here.

.

Our story probably will not settle the debate once and for all. Because of time and workload constraints, our examination and our numbers do not include projects that are not directly on the line. That means if a developer on Sycamore Street built something because a streetcar stop was just a block away on Main Street, that project is not included in our research. Because of that, Grandin Properties CEO Peg Wyant bluntly told me that we are low-balling the overall investment traceable to the streetcar line. So we made it clear in the story the parameters of our research it is a sampling and its limitations.

.

Others might quibble with the fact that we let people self-rate the streetcar factor for their projects and argue that property owners who are streetcar supporters will overstate the projects importance in their decision making. But mind-reading, unfortunately, is beyond our journalistic ability, and given the broad sample we collected, those with anti-streetcar bias also are included.

"The Second Avenue Subway (officially the IND Second Avenue Line; abbreviated to SAS) is a New York City Subway line that has been under discussion since the 1910s. It runs under Second Avenue on the East Side of Manhattan. The first phase of this new line opened on January 1, 2017, extending the Q train to 96th Street and Second Avenue, serving a projected 200,000 daily riders at four new stations. Some N trains provide additional service on the line during rush hours. Phase one runs between 96th Street and the 63rd Street Lines, connecting to the BMT Broadway Line and the rest of the subway system. The full Second Avenue Line, if and when funded, would be built in three additional phases, allowing portions to open before the entire line is completed. When completed, it would be served by a proposed T train between 125th Street and Hanover Square. The proposed full line would be 8.5 miles (13.7 km) long with 16 stations and a projected daily ridership of 560,000, costing more than $17 billion.

.

The line was originally proposed in 1919 as part of a massive expansion of what would become the Independent Subway System (IND). Work on the line never commenced, as the Great Depression crushed the economy. Numerous plans for the Second Avenue Subway appeared throughout the 20th century, but these were usually deferred due to lack of funds. The line was proposed to replace the Second Avenue and Third Avenue elevated lines; although the new subway was not built, the elevated lines were demolished in 1942 and 1955, respectively. This left the Lexington Avenue Subway as the only rapid transit line on much of Manhattan's east side; today, it is by far the busiest subway line in the United States, with an estimated 1.3 million daily riders.

.

Construction on the Second Avenue Line started in 1972, but was halted in 1975 because of the city's major fiscal crisis, with only a few short segments of the line having been completed at the time. Simultaneously, construction work on the 63rd Street Lines, which would connect the Second Avenue Line and the IND Queens Boulevard Line to the BMT Broadway Line and the IND Sixth Avenue Line, started in 1969. Work on the 63rd Street Lines continued even after construction on the Second Avenue line ended. The first segment of the 63rd Street Lineswhich opened in October 1989 and extended to 21st StreetQueensbridge in Long Island City, Queensleft provisions for future connections to the Second Avenue Line.

.

Work on the line restarted in 2007 following the development of a financially secure construction plan. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) awarded a tunneling contract for the first phase of the project to the consortium of Schiavone/Shea/Skanska (S3) on March 20, 2007. This followed preliminary engineering and a final tunnel design completed by a joint venture between AECOM and Arup. Parsons Brinckerhoff is serving as the Construction Manager of the project. A full funding grant agreement with the Federal Transit Administration for the first phase of the project was received in November 2007. A ceremonial ground-breaking for the Second Avenue Subway was held on April 12, 2007. The first phase of the line consists of three newly-built stations and two miles (3.2 km) of tunnel, costing $4.45 billion."

Second Avenue Subways Arrival Brings Fear That Rents Will Soar

Few cities in the world are as closely linked to their subways as New York City the vast network helped shape the city and now carries nearly six million people a day. So when the most ambitious expansion of the subway system in half a century opens on Sunday, it will be a transformative moment, promising to alter the future of a large slice of Manhattan.

.

The new Second Avenue subway will provide badly needed relief to one of New Yorks most congested transit corridors and is expected to be a boon to the local economy, making restaurants and stores suddenly easier to reach. But even as the city celebrates a line many doubted would ever open, its arrival has prompted fears that rising rents could force out longtime residents and shops the kind of displacement that has swept through many other parts of an increasingly affluent New York and deepened its inequality.

.

People living near three new stations at 72nd, 86th and 96th Streets could face rent increases as high as $462 per month, according to a report by StreetEasy, a real estate website. Sleek high-rises are already popping up above the walk-up apartment buildings that have served as first homes for many New Yorkers.

.

snip

.

Once a German enclave where elevated trains ran above Second and Third Avenues, the Yorkville neighborhood on the Upper East Side is now home to millennials looking for a deal, families drawn by good schools and older people with limited budgets. Rowdy bars with beer pong games exist alongside hordes of strollers. On its eastern border sits the verdant but out-of-the way Carl Schurz Park and Gracie Mansion, the mayoral estate, whose current resident, Bill de Blasio, prefers to use chauffeured cars over the far-flung subway.

.

The elevated lines were razed in the 1940s and 1950s, to the delight of many residents who viewed them as noisy eyesores and expected a new subway line to open soon. Instead, the area became a rapid-transit desert, one of the few neighborhoods in Manhattan that the subway did not reach.

.

But this has also made the neighborhood relatively affordable by Manhattan standards. Yorkvilles median rent is about $2,700 per month, lower than Manhattans rate of about $3,300, according to StreetEasy, and there are clusters of rent-stabilized and rent-controlled apartments.

.

A real estate wave seemed forever around the corner as plans for the subway line were delayed again and again. Until now, residents have been forced to trek blocks to the nearest packed subway stops to board No.4, 5 and 6 trains on Lexington Avenue, the nations most-crowded subway line.

.

snip

.

Since the subway first opened in Manhattan in 1904 and expanded farther into the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens, it has paved the way for development, and it propelled the citys soaring population in the first half of the 20th century. But in recent decades, the system has largely remained the same size, even as the citys population of 8.5 million is the highest ever and continues to climb.

.

snip

.

Across the United States, good transit access often leads to higher real estate prices, with home values near rapid transit in Boston, Chicago, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Phoenix and San Francisco far outpacing other properties during the last recession, according to a report by the American Public Transportation Association.

The Insanely Expensive Second Avenue Subway Explained

If You Build It

.

Phase 1 adds three entirely new stations to the subway system, at 72nd, 86th, 96thall along Second Avenue. The existing 63rd Street-Lexington Avenue Station, where the F runs, was also renovated so the new-and-improved Q train can stop there. There will be a cross-platform transfer between the Q and the F.

.

Two tunnels, one northbound and one southbound, were dug for Phase 1. Drilling of the northbound (west) tunnelwhich is 1.47-miles- or 7,789-feet-longtook approximately eight months. It was completed in February 2011. The southbound (east) tunnel, which at 1.36 miles, or 7,209 feet, is slightly shorter, was completed in September 2011. All told, the cost of the project works out to approximately $300,000 per foot tunneled.

.

A 450-foot long, 484-ton tunnel boring machine nicknamed "Adi" did the digging; it removed 15 million cubic feet of rock and 6 million cubic feet of soil. That's enough to bury a football field 360 feet deep. Adi was later shipped to Indianapolis to be used for another tunneling project.

.

They Will Come

.

The MTA expects 200,000 people to use the Phase 1 line on an average weekday. For context, that's more than half as many daily riders as the entire Los Angeles Metro system (350,000). So as expensive as the new project is, it's a major improvement for the system. And compared to the monstrous Santiago Calatrava dino skeleton PATH Station, which cost $4 billion dollars and is serving around 50,000 riders a day, we could call it a steal.

.

.

What's Next

.

If the entire SAS is built, it will feature a total of 15 new stations spread out over 8.5 miles. The line, which will ultimately get its own letter (T) and color (turquoise), would be the shortest complete line in the system. (We're stuck with the Q until phase 3; the "T" only arrives when the line extends south to Houston.) Hopefully, we'll see a complete line in our lifetime.

This New NYC Subway Map Shows the Second Avenue Line, So It Has to Really Be Happening

By Jen Kirby

.

.

Its really there! The Second Avenue line is on this map, which was included in the MTAs board-meeting minutes on Wednesday. The Q train will be extended up through 63rd Street and shuttle riders to and from the Upper East Side through 96th Street. This is Phase 1 of the project, which is really, seriously, "the MTA said it, okay?" expected to be completed in December 2016. And if a geographically inaccurate map of New York City says it, it has to be true.

.

Second Avenue Sagas pointed out a little caveat to this good news: The MTA, which expects the extension to serve about 200,000 riders at first, doesnt really plan to increase the frequency of Q service, so rush-hour waits will be some of the longest across all subways. For example, during the morning rush, southbound trains (i.e., those originating at 96 Street) will run every eight minutes. Then again, its still probably faster than watching two or three 6 trains pass by before one arrives with enough space to squeeze on to.

A Brief History of the Second Avenue Subway Line

December 30, 2016

by Stephen Nessen

http://www.wnyc.org/story/brief-history-2nd-avenue-subway-line/

.

.

New York City is filled with colossal feats of engineering that often come with excruciating delays. While it was nearly a decade before ground zero was rebuilt. It took nearly a century, 14 mayors, 12 governors and dozens of transit leaders later to complete three new subway stops along Second Avenue that are expected to open to the public on January 1, 2017.

.

What took so long?

.

After World War I, the subways were more crowded than ever (and oh-so-briefly profitable). This led to some grand schemes: there was to be a subway line for every major avenue, including under Second Avenue, from Houston Street to the Harlem River. It was estimated to cost $86 million dollars...but then the stock market crashed, and plans were put on hold.

.

There were efforts after World War II, but a wave of inflation deterred officials, who decided to spend money on maintaining the existing lines. The East Side had two elevated lines, along Second and Third Avenues, as well as the Lexington Avenue subway. But by 1955 the El trains reached the end of the line, and were torn down.

.

Meanwhile, the Second Avenue subway met a powerful opponent in Robert Moses, who preferred highways to mass transit and thwarted efforts to build the new line in 1942 and again in 1954.

.

Hopes were rekindled in 1968, when the city received federal funding to expand its subways for the first time ever. A proposal for a Second Avenue line that went from 34th Street up to the Bronx was drawn up, and expected to cost $220 million.

New York City's Second Avenue Subway is a wonderland of public art
Rush hour has never been so culturally enriching.

The New York Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) pleased modern architecture admirers while also supplying sharp-tongued critics with a generous helping of fodder earlier this year when it debuted Santiago Calatravas controversial and mega-costly World Trade Center transit hub. Now, starting Jan.1, the MTA is giving contemporary art buffs and straphangers alike something to take in and talk about at a quartet of subway stations three of them new and one expanded on Manhattans Upper East Side.

.

Together composing the first phase of the painfully long-awaited Second Avenue subway line, these four stations arent themselves works of art like Calatravas downtown transit hub, a soaring structure meant to evoke a bird in flight. However, the stations 63rd Street, 72nd Street, 86th Street and 96th Street are stuffed to the gills with enough detour-worthy public art to establish them as bona fide cultural attractions.

.

Cultural attractions certainly a term you dont frequently hear in direct reference to New York City Subway stations, even though more than a few boast eye-catching works of public art.

.

Essentially, you could regard the Second Avenue Subways art-adorned inaugural stations, heralded as the "largest permanent public art installation in New York history by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, as subterranean mini-museums. But unlike their non-MTA-operated aboveground counterparts, these museums will eventually also be home to pizza-lugging rats and a vast array of microbial life.

.

Each of the four stations, which are scheduled to be open to the public on Jan. 1 following considerable delay, is home to a major installation by a single esteemed artist: At 63rd Street is Elevated, a sprawling work in which Jean Shin brings to life archival photographs taken of and on Manhattans now-extinct elevated train lines with ceramic, glass and mosaic; the 72nd Street station is populated by Perfect Strangers, a photo-based mosaic installation by Brazilian-born, Brooklyn-based artist Vik Muniz; rendered in mosaic and ceramic tile, Subway Portraits is the latest from celebrity photorealist Chuck Close and can be found beneath the intersection of 86th Street and 2nd Avenue; lastly, Sarah Szes immersive Blueprint for a Landscape unfolds across the walls of the 96th Street station.

.

snip

.

While the installations at all four stations are remarkable in their own right, the Chuck Close installation at 86th Street will no doubt garner the most attention from out-of-towners and rubbernecking non-commuters considering that Close teeters into household name territory with his larger-than-life gridded portraits serving as crowd-drawing fixture at numerous major contemporary art museums across the world including New York's own Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art. (The suggested/required adult admission price at both of these museums is $25 while a single ride on the subway costs $2.75).

2nd Avenue Subway

Legislation | Documents/Reports | Links | Press Releases

https://maloney.house.gov/issues/local-issues/2nd-avenue-subway

Building the Second Avenue Subway has been one of my top priorities since I was first elected to Congress. New York Citys subway system has not added capacity in over 60 years, and we need to expand. Passengers on the Lexington Avenue line have the dubious distinction of riding on the most overcrowded subway line in the entire nation. There is a limit to the number of people that can be crammed into one subway car, but the Lex line seems to have exceeded that limit. A Second Avenue Subway offers a much-needed alternative for commuters. The full length subway, which will run from 125th Street to lower Manhattan, will also reach underserved neighborhoods on the East Side.

.

One of two New Start projects in the city (the other, East Side Access, is also in my district), the Second Avenue Subway has been rated by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) as one of the best in the country. The former Administrator of the FTA, Jenna Dorn, told me that the best work she had ever seen submitted was the MTAs submission on the Second Avenue Subway.

.

The project is being divided into four phases. The first phase will create new tracks and tunnels from 99th Street to 63rd Street, with new stations at 96th, 86th and 72nd Street. The new line will then link onto existing underused Q train tracks and provide a one seat ride to lower Manhattan and Brooklyn. When completed, the Second Avenue Subway will move 202,000 people, more than any other New Start project in the nation. With strong support from the entire New York Congressional delegation and our two Senators, we broke ground for the subway in April 2007. The MTA completed construction of the two tunnels for the subway on September 22, 2011, five months ahead of the February 2012 expected completion date. Construction is also well underway for the 96th Street, 86th Street, 72nd Street and 63rd Street entrances.

.

The first phase of the project will cost approximately $4.4 billion, and the lions share of the funding is already committed. On November 19, 2007, the FTA entered into a full funding grant agreement with the MTA, committing the federal government to provide $1.3 billion to construct the Second Avenue Subway, of which more than $900 million has already been appropriated. The state is obligated to provide the remaining $3.1 billion. Thanks to the leadership of Speaker Sheldon Silver, New York State appropriated $1.05 billion in its 2000-2004 capital plan. In 2005, New York State voters approved another $450 million from the Transportation Bond Act. As a symbol of the support for the project, the East Side of Manhattan cast more votes in support of the Transportation Bond Act than any other area of the state. The remainder is expected to be allocated in the states 20102014 and 2015-2019 capital plans.

New Yorkers who've waited decades for a subway line on Second Avenue may not agree, but the long-running and nearly completed project is getting high marks from a Congresswoman who was vital in securing federal funds to build the line. Transit Reporter Jose Martinez has the story.
The nearly century-long effort to bring a subway to Second Avenue is not done yet as the clock ticks down toward a hoped-for December opening of three new stations.

Highlights From the Opening of the Second Avenue Subway

After taking nearly a century to build, the Second Avenue subway extension in Manhattan opened on Sunday with excitement and complaints.

.

Three new stations opened at 72nd, 86th and 96th Streets.

.

The route is an extension of the Q line, which now runs from the Upper East Side in Manhattan to Coney Island in Brooklyn.

.

Im Not Driving the Train, Cuomo Says

.

Shortly before noon on Sunday, a flood of New Yorkers streamed into the new 96th Street station, swiping their MetroCards and boarding the first Second Avenue subway train leaving the station. As the train pulled out, subway riders clapped and cheered.

.

Then Gov. Andrew M. Cuomos voice came over the loudspeaker, welcoming passengers to the historic ride.

.

Rest assured, Im not driving the train, he joked before thanking Metropolitan Transportation Authority workers for finishing the first segment of the line.

.

.

Its Been a Long Time Coming

.

Joe Caronetti, 68, of the Norwood neighborhood in the Bronx, had been waiting for the train since 10:15 a.m. on Sunday.

.

Not counting the 68 years prior, he added.

.

Mr. Caronetti, a retired banker, said it was the sixth time he had been on hand for the opening of a new train, having also gone on inaugural rides in Los Angeles and New Jersey.

.

Im just a train buff, he said, wearing an M.T.A. cap he had gotten on Friday.

.

Another train enthusiast at the station, Marvin Loja Espinoza, 17, a senior at Aviation High School, was waiting to get on the first train leaving there.

.

Originally from Ecuador, he discovered his love for trains when he moved to the United States in 2005. His hometown had no trains, he said.

.

Struggling to make friends in a new place, he spent his lunches in the library studying train maps, he said. His knowledge of the subway lines is so extensive that his friends call him M.T.A. Savage.

.

Ian Ma, 15, said that when he was a child, he would run his toy trains back and forth across the floor of the familys home in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn.

.

On Sunday, he couldnt stop grinning as he snapped photographs at the new station at 72nd Street. Ive always been a big train guy, he said. And I feel like Ive been waiting for this train my whole life.

.

Pete Cerwin, 51, has lived at 72nd Street and Second Avenue for 20 years. For him, it has been two decades of false starts, letdowns and construction.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) More than 100 people were hurt Wednesday when a Long Island Rail Road train hit a bumping block at the end of a track at Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn.

.

The National Transportation Safety Board sent a team to investigate the incident, which happened around 8:15 a.m. Wednesday as Train No. 2817 from Far Rockaway was pulling into the terminal on Track 6.

.

The NTSB team arrived in New York City by 6 p.m. and began examining the scene, according to NTSB investigator Jim Southworth. Wearing hard hats and vests, federal investigators were examining the train, the tracks, the signal system and had recovered the trains event recorders late Wednesday.

.

Meanwhile, as CBS2s Jessica Layton reported, exclusive photos provide a close look at the crash that turned a typical morning into pandemonium.

.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority Chairman Tom Prendergast said the train went up and over the bumping block. It then crashed into an employee area on the platform.

.

Fire officials also said a piece of the rail pierced the bottom of the train.

.

Obviously, the train is supposed to stop short of the bumping block, Prednergast said. It did not do that, so its one of things we will look at as part of investigation.

.

Transit officials said the lead wheel assembly and one other axle derailed as a result of the impact.

.

The maximum speed permitted in the area just ahead of the bumping block that the train hit is limited to 5 mph, Southworth said.

.

The Routes Not Taken: A Trip Through New York City's Unbuilt Subway System
Fordham University Press Series
Author Joseph B. Raskin
Edition illustrated, reprint
Publisher Fordham University Press, 2013
ISBN 0823253694, 9780823253692
Length 323 pages

Delves deep into the underbelly of the NYC subway system to reveal the tunnels and stations that might have been. Robert A. Van Wyck, mayor of the greater city of New York, broke ground for the first subway line by City Hall on March 24, 1900. It took four years, six months, and twenty-three days to build the line from City Hall to West 145th Street in Harlem. Things rarely went that quickly ever again. The Routes Not Taken explores the often dramatic stories behind the unbuilt or unfinished subway lines, shedding light on a significant part of New York City's history that has been almost completely ignored until now. Home to one of the world's largest subway systems, New York City made constant efforts to expand its underground labyrinth, efforts that were often met with unexpected obstacles: financial shortfalls, clashing agendas of mayors and borough presidents, battles with local community groups, and much more. After discovering a copy of the 1929 subway expansion map, author Joseph Raskin began his own investigation into the city's underbelly. Using research from libraries, historical societies, and transit agencies throughout the New York metropolitan area, Raskin provides a fascinating history of the Big Apple's unfinished business that until now has been only tantalizing stories retold by public-transit experts. The Routes Not Taken sheds light on the tunnels and stations that were completed for lines that were never fulfilled: the efforts to expand the Hudson tubes into a fullfledged subway; the Flushing line, and why it never made it past Flushing; a platform underneath Brooklyn's Nevins Street station that has remained unused for more than a century; and the 2nd Avenue line long the symbol of dashed dreams deferred countless times since the original plans were presented in 1929. Raskin also reveals the figures and personalities involved, including why Fiorello LaGuardia could not grasp the importance of subway lines and why Robert Moses found them to be old and boring. By focusing on the unbuilt lines, Raskin illustrates how the existing subway system is actually a Herculean feat of countless political compromises. Filled with illustrations of the extravagant expansion plans, The Routes Not Taken provides an enduring contribution to the transportation history of New York City.

taken this step, adjustments to Market Frankford Line service will be made
beginning with Monday, February 6, 2017.

BILOXI - Four people died and 34 were injured Tuesday when a freight train hit a charter bus that appeared to be stuck on railroad tracks at the Main Street crossing.

.

Biloxi Police Chief John Miller confirmed the first three fatalities in a press conference shortly after the 2:15 p.m. crash. A fourth person died at Merit Health in Biloxi, Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove said.

.

Hargrove said two men and two women died. Their identities will be released at a later time.

.

The bus had come to the Mississippi Coast from Austin, Texas, carrying 46 people.

.

The group was on a seven-day trip organized by the Bastrop Senior Center, according to the Austin Statesman newspaper. Ameet Patel with Penn National Gaming, owner of Boomtown Casino and Hollywood Casino Gulf Coast, said they had been at Hollywood in Bay St. Louis and were headed to Boomtown for the day.

.

Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to remove two people from the wreckage, said Biloxi Fire Chief Joe Boney, incident commander. They also used ladders to remove others as sirens blared and people yelled out. They used a car near the wreck as a stepladder.

.

Biloxi spokesman Vincent Creel said the driver was alert and speaking with medical personnel immediately after the crash. Its unclear if he was sent to the hospital.

.

The train was eastbound when it hit the northbound charter bus, pushing it some 300 feet, Creel said.

.

Why the bus was on the tracks remains unclear. Miller said he wasnt sure if it had an engine problem. CSX Transportation has sent investigators. It wasnt clear if the National Transportation Safety Board had been notified.

.

Miller said its the first time Biloxi has had a tragedy of this magnitude.

.

We had a lot of people here in a hurry, he said Tuesday afternoon. Its a terrible tragedy. I know that theres a lot of families that are going to be impacted here. I just want everyone to know we are doing everything we can do to help everyone on that bus.

.

Miller said Biloxi police and firefighters had training on what to do in a train emergency just last week, and it proved vital in getting victims out of the wrecked bus.

.

I took off running

.

Two men who saw the crash said it appeared the bus got stuck minutes before a CSX train approached, blowing its horn.

.

I took off running, Craig Robinson said. He said he hoped to tell people to get off the bus, but the train hit before he reached it.

.

Mark Robinson said he saw people getting off the bus before the train hit it.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) Riders will have their commute affected Monday after cracks were found in SEPTAs Market-Frankford Line cars. Two SEPTA Market Frankford cars have been taken out of service this weekend after cracks were found.

.

Beginning Monday morning, between 30-40 more will be removed, SEPTA officials tell us this is for safety reasons.

.

SEPTA officials say about one-third of its fleet will be taken out of service Monday.

.

SEPTA will hold a press conference updating the situation Monday at 1:00 p.m.

.

SEPTAs Carla Showell-Lee said they are working to make this inconvenience as smooth as possible for riders.

.

People should know that the Market Frankford Line trains will continue to operate between 69th Street Transportation Center and the Frankford Transportation Center, she said. Were gonna have shuttle buses, about 60 out there between the peak hours of 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. and then 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. at select stations.

SEPTA TRANSPORTATION ALERT

Market-Frankford Line
SERVICE ADVISORY | Market Frankford Line - Supplemental Bus Service: Adjustments to the Market Frankford Line will be in effect beginning Monday, February 6, 2017. Visit the Market Frankford Line Supplemental Bus Service page for additional information

The Market-Frankford Line runs as Night Owl bus service between the hours of 12:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. Board buses on street level at designated Market-Frankford Line Night Owl bus stops.

Effective Monday, February 6, 2017

.

A crack in a body bolster (a main load carrying structural beam) was uncovered this weekend on one Market Frankford Line car undergoing a scheduled vehicle overhaul. Subsequent inspections revealed an additional car with a crack. In the interest of safety, we took a proactive measure to temporarily pull from service some of the fleet that have indications of a crack. All Market Frankford Line trains currently in service and those that will be in operation on Monday have been inspected. Having taken this step, adjustments to Market Frankford Line service will be made beginning with Monday, February 6, 2017.

.

Market Frankford Line trains will continue in operation between 69th Street Transportation Center and Frankford Transportation Center and will make stops but we will be 30-40 cars short of the 144 needed to run regular, weekday peak hour service levels.

.

During AM and PM peak travel hours we anticipate the trains and platforms will become very crowded. To ensure the safety of customers we will supplement Market Frankford service with shuttle buses, serving select stations, during the AM Peak - 6:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m. and PM Peak - 3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. (see details below).

.

SEPTA will have personnel at each station, during the hours noted above, monitoring crowding conditions. They will determine if customers can be directed to the train platform or to the shuttle bus but we ask you to be prepared to use a shuttle bus if you are traveling from one of the stations noted below.

.

This remains a fluid situation and we will continue to keep you updated on any service changes and the work to return cars to the fleet.

UPPER DARBY >> A SEPTA operator was critically injured Tuesday morning when a westbound SEPTA Market-Frankfort Line train derailed after it collided with a stopped train at 69th Street Terminal.

.

Seven cars were at least partially derailed, injuring four people two operators and two passengers around 8:10 a.m. Tuesday morning.

.

SEPTA Assistant General Manager Scott Sauer said that Train 67 was waiting in queue for the station to clear when the westbound-traveling Train 57 collided with it on the turnaround loop.

.

Four cars from Train 57 derailed, and three cars from Train 67 derailed. Additionally, a third train was impacted when a car from the colliding train derailed onto the adjacent track.

.

The operator of Train 57 was listed in critical condition at Lankenau Hospital.

.

snip

.

Sauer said in the preliminary investigation it wasnt clear why the passengers were still aboard. He indicted that the trains were non-revenue trains which means they were not meant for carrying passengers.

.

snip

.

The M4 trains that comprise the Market-Frankford Line were built and delivered by ADTranz between 1996 and 1999. They were the first heavy rail cars in SEPTAs fleet that offered electronic designation signs.

.

Tuesday evening, work to re-rail the train cars was put on hold as SEPTA awaited the arrival of the National Transit Safety Board to arrive from Washington D.C. to take over the investigation. Questions that remained unanswered Tuesday evening were why the operator failed to stop in lieu of safety measures that should have prevented such an incident, and why passengers were aboard.

.

Three trains and 18 total cars were impacted in the Tuesday morning collision, further making the already diminished MFL fleet even more strained. Earlier in the month SEPTA announced that a number of M4 trains, which comprise the MFL fleet, showed signs of fractures in the car body bolster beams.

Work Remains to Address Atlanta Streetcar Audit

Dozens of problems have been identified in a stinging audit of the Atlanta Streetcar.

ATLANTA (AP) Dozens of problems have been identified in a stinging audit of the Atlanta Streetcar.

.

Documents obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

http://bit.ly/2mV9AFA

show the troubled $99 million project is dealing with a shortage in staff, lax safety and security procedures, accidents that weren't properly investigated or reported and defective equipment that disrupted service.

.

More than a year later, the newspaper reports the city has resolved less than one-third of the 66 flaws found in February 2016 for a project envisioned as a centerpiece of the city's revitalization.

.

The city has completely resolved only 20 of them. It's unclear how soon officials will complete the rest of the audit's concerns. The Georgia Department of Transportation says the city is on track to finish the list by June.

.

Ridership fell nearly 60 percent last year after Atlanta began charging $1 to ride, federal statistics show. And the city estimates a third to a half of passengers still don't bother to pay.

.

Critics argue the streetcar is a failure and waste of taxpayers' dollars and should be abandoned.

.

Instead, Atlanta plans a major expansion.

.

The Atlanta Streetcar debuted in December 2014 to great fanfare and high expectations. The system runs on a 2.7-mile loop that connects Centennial Olympic Park, the King Center, Georgia State University and the Peachtree Center MARTA rail station. Critics say it's sometimes faster to walk the line that to wait on a streetcar that winds through traffic.

.

Despite the rocky start, the city still hopes to use the existing line as a launching point to create a 53-mile streetcar and light rail network across the city. It's a move that would cost billions, but supporters contend it's a long-term investment that will transform Atlanta as it expands, connecting to the Beltline and other attractions and drawing a new generation of workers and residents.

.

snip

.

"I think that over time it will prove successful, even with the toughest critics," said A. J. Robinson, president of the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District, which helped pay for the streetcar. "If Atlanta wants to be competitive with the rest of the country . these are the types of investments you have to make."
