A new book titled Columbia River Gorge Railroads just arrived at the library, and its loaded with photographs. Covering both the Washington and Oregon sides of the Columbia River Gorge, author D.C. Jesse Burkhardt shares the history of the areas rail lines through a compilation of captioned photographs, many of which are from his own collection.

.

Burkhardt was the editor of the White Salmon newspaper, The Enterprise, from 1994 to 2011, so his connection with railroads is very local indeed. But his interest in trains began much earlier.

.

Railroads caught my spirit when I was a kid growing up near an east-west mainline in southern Michigan. There was something magical about standing alongside those tracks feeling the wind in my face and seeing the distant twinkle of an emerald signal light.

.

The library has several books by Burkhardt, so if you enjoy his latest book, consider adding one or more of his other titles to your locomotive reading list.

.

snip

.

The library has many other train-related titles, so if riding the rails figures high on your list of must-do activities, get on track by absorbing as much locomotive information as you can. Oh, and just so you know, getting a ride on the crazy train is not an option. It derailed a long time ago. Same goes for the gravy train.

"God what courage. Lying under a train that might collapse on them at any minute and trusting their fellows to do the right thing and keep them safe. That's the brotherhood. Do you know if they managed to re-attach her foot? With all the other injuries they may have simply had to amputate it above the crush line since her other bone fractures, (not to mention internal injuries), were life-threatening and eliminating the massive blood loss from the ankle could be what made the difference as to whether she survived.?"

Four people were killed when a passenger train derailed in northwestern Spain on Friday, with excessive speed suspected as being the cause of the crash.

.

The train was travelling from the Galician city of Vigo to Porto in northern Portugal when the accident happened near the town of O Porri at around 9.25 on Friday morning.

.

The Portuguese driver of the train is among the four dead as is the Spanish guard who was on board. The other two victims confirmed so far are a US citizen and a 23-year-old man from Vigo.

.

Forty-nine other passengers were hurt in the crash, with one person remaining in a critical condition in hospital.

.

The 9.02am train from Vigo derailed when going around a bend in the track, 200 metres from the station at O Porrino, where it was not due to stop. It struck the base of a road bridge going over the track causing one carriage to partially overturn before coming to a halt after also hitting a metal post.

.

The Spanish railway operator Adif announced immediately after the crash that it had launched an investigation.

.

But the first indications suggested that excessive speed may have been the cause of the accident.

.

Speaking after visiting the crash site, Spains infrastructure minister, Rafael Catal said that improvement work had been in progress on the line at the point at which the accident took place, meaning that any train passing through had to be diverted onto an alternative track.

.

There was a special speed limit in place on the alternative track of 30 km/h.

.

Mr Catalalso said that the train, built in the early 1980s, had passed an extremely rigorous safety inspection in Portugal the day before the crash.

USA: Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority announced on August 18 that Advertising Vehicles, its advertising sales contractor for the Cincinnati Streetcar, had signed a naming rights contract for the 58 km line that is due to open on September 9.

.

Local telecoms company Cincinnati Bell will pay $340 000 per year for 10 years under the contract, with proceeds going towards operational expenditure. The service will be renamed the Cincinnati Bell Connector, and the fleet of five CAF Urbos trams will carry Cincinnati Bell graphics on the front, back, top and interior, replacing the current logo and livery. The 18 stops will also carry the companys branding. The contract does not exclude other advertising being sold inside and outside the vehicles.

Here's How US Regional Transit Agencies Impede the Development of Public Transport

Back in 2013, in the middle of all the wrangling over the Cincinnati streetcar, the head of the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Peter Rogoff said something really interesting in his letter to the city and the regions transit agency.

.

The Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority (SORTA) is the fiduciary agent for the FTA funding which passes through to the city. The agency wanted to stay on the FTA's good side since it receives other federal funding. The mayor was looking to kill the project for who knows what reasons he set his mind to, but this is really kind of an aside. Heres what Rogoff said in his letter, relayed by the Cincinnati Business Courier:

.

Transit improvements are best deployed when they are governed and controlled under one roof.

.

While FTA has been successful in supporting transit projects that are not controlled or operated by the region's principal transit agency, we have found that there are a great many economies of scale that better serve the taxpayer when a fully staffed and experienced transit provider is involved from the very beginning.

.

But isn't that part of the problem? These massive regional transit agencies are typically stacked with suburban board members that don't always have the core citys needs at heart. They are usually concocting schemes to extract money or service from the more transit-willing neighborhoods in the region, in order to have some sort of suburb-to-city dream bus or commuter rail line that costs a lot, but really doesn't move the needle on changing mobility in a meaningful way. Either that, or they have to have an election, that includes precincts heavily-opposed to transit, and which sink ballot initiatives that pass in the city proper.

.

So recently cities have been taking on the mantle of thinking up and building transit that works for them and their goals. Portland, Cincinnati, Austin, and others have all taken up planning for more urban transit options and with much different goals. At the start of the Portland Streetcar process, regional agency Tri-Met wanted nothing to do with it.

.

Rightly or wrongly, the city streetcar movement is a function of the neglect that centre cities feel when it comes to regional transit priorities. The core might be the economic engine for the region, but the fiscal extraction continues.

.

Rogoffs words were also a disappointing admission that transit agencies and their federal funders still don't know their role in city building.

USA: A weekend of free travel marked the opening to passengers of the Cincinnati Bell Connector at midday on September 9.

.

The 58 km tram route uses a pair of single tracks along parallel streets, running from Second Street at The Banks to Henry Street in Over-the-Rhine. There are 18 stops.

.

Built by a joint venture of Messer, Prus and Delta Railroad, with stops designed by DNK Architects, the route is owned and funded by the city of Cincinnati and managed by the Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority. Services are operated by Transdev under an operations and maintenance contract awarded last year.

Two U.S. Streetcar Lines Celebrate Milestones

Streetcar Projects Inch Closer to the Finish Line in Cincinnati, Kansas City
.

In weve-been-waiting-for-this news, officials in both Cincinnati and Kansas City are marking milestones in the progress of their modern streetcar starter lines.

.

In Cincinnati, the last segment of rail for the line from downtown to the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood was welded into place Friday, marking the completion of construction on time and within budget, according to a story in the Cincinnati Business Courier. Believe in Cincinnati, the citizens group that organized to keep the streetcar from being canceled in 2014, held a news conference to mark the occasion, but city officials said they would wait until the first streetcars arrived next month before celebrating.

.

Meanwhile, in Kansas City, KCUR reports that the Kansas City Streetcar Authoritys storage and maintenance facility, E. Crichton Kite Singleton Yard, is 95 percent complete and that power to the streetcar lines overhead wires will be turned on this week. Hiring of the yards 20 maintenance workers will begin in November as the power supply is tested to make sure it is ready when the citys first cars arrive later this month.

.

Both cities ordered streetcars from Spanish car builder CAF. The cars were to have been delivered to both cities by now, but production issues have delayed shipment; Kansas City has fined CAF USA for the delays in shipping its cars.

.

Both lines are, or were to have been, initial phases of longer streetcar lines. Voters in Kansas City rejected a measure that would have expanded the streetcar taxing district over the summer. In Cincinnati, streetcar advocates are urging the city to move forward with Phase 1b of the starter line, which would extend the line farther uptown to the University of Cincinnati, but Mayor John Cranley prefers a wait-and-see approach that would hold off on planning the extension until the initial segment has met or surpassed expectations for ridership and development.

D.C. Streetcar Will Definitely Be Running by Years End (Maybe)

.

Heres what we know about the troubled H Street modern streetcar line in Washington, thanks to a recent story in the Washington Post: It will be free to ride for an initial period; how long that period will last is up in the air right now. After the free period ends, the fare will probably be the same as the successful DC Circulator buses the District of Columbia Department of Transportation runs: $1. Fares will be collected on a proof of payment basis, where roving inspectors check passengers to see that they have valid tickets. Cars will run every 15 minutes, a figure DDOT hopes to get down to every 12 minutes eventually. And it will definitely be picking up riders by the end of the year.

.

That is, assuming all the safety testing Is have been dotted and Ts crossed.

Streetcars of desire: why are American cities obsessed with building trams?

In the arms race of urban transit, streetcars are back in favour. Sean Marshall does a grand tour of Detroit, Cincinnati, Atlanta and Tampa to find out why

Torontos streetcar system, originally designed for a much smaller, pre-automobile city, quickly became a nuisance to ride. In rush-hour traffic, streetcars are slow, crowded, unreliable and prone to the dreaded short-turn where they turn back before reaching their destination, in an attempt to stick to the schedule. What seemed unique and exciting as a child quickly became a hassle for the regular user.

.

And yet, Torontos streetcars better known as trams in Europe are an integral part of city life here. Nearly 300,000 daily passengers are served by the 250-strong fleet, with some routes scheduled to run at two-minute intervals during peak times. In Toronto, as in Amsterdam, Melbourne and Prague, trams are an essential part of the urban transport system but why exactly? To tackle my long-held skepticism of Americas streetcar projects, I determined to take a road trip from Toronto to Miami to visit four streetcar cities: Detroit, Cincinnati, Atlanta and Tampa.

.

Clearly, streetcars do offer some advantages over buses. They provide a smoother ride, can carry more passengers (the TTC would require three buses to provide the same capacity as the one new, low-floor streetcar currently being added to the fleet), and run on clean electricity. They arent any slower than comparable bus routes on other streets and, of course, theyre charming. Arguably, the streetcars of Toronto are equivalent to New Yorks yellow cabs or the gondolas of Venice, an internationally recognised symbol of the city.

.

After the second world war, however, most North American cities abandoned their streetcar networks as ridership declined, car ownership soared, and the cost to renew streetcar infrastructure footed mostly by cash-strapped private transit operators proved too steep.

.

snip

.

Yet by the late 1980s, streetcar lines were once again popping up in cities across the country. Originally, many of these new lines were short, vintage streetcar routes, mimicking New Orleans famous St Charles Streetcar line. These heritage streetcars use antique or replica equipment and were mainly intended to cater to tourists, or to support downtown commerce or redevelopment.

.

Portlands streetcar, opened in 2001, was the first new, modern streetcar system built in North America, and the operation separate from the older Tri-Met light rail system features sleek low-floor trams running on downtown streets. The Portland service was not designed so much to appeal to tourists, but part of a strategy to foster redevelopment of its central core and inner city neighbourhoods.

.

snip

.

Today, the Portland system serves 20,000 riders daily. In 2007, it was credited in the New York Times for spurring $2.4bn in new commercial and residential projects in the Pearl District and South Waterfront, though some critics claim that innovative zoning regulations and local demand should take most of the credit.

.

Seattle soon followed Portlands lead and at the time of writing, Tacoma, Washington, Salt Lake City, Tuscon and Atlanta have also opened new modern streetcar lines, while Washington DC, Kansas City, Cincinnati, Detroit, St Louis, Milwaukee, and Charlotte, North Carolina are building or planning their own.

.

So why are American cities now rushing to build streetcars? According to prominent transit advocate Jarrett Walker, a Portland native, streetcars attract more riders than buses. Theyre fun to ride, and quieter and cleaner than diesel buses. According to Walker, politicians and planners in these cities hope that the pleasant experience of riding the streetcar will make people value transit as a whole, as well as making downtown a more attractive place to live, shop, work and play. But he also argues that streetcars are not fulfilling the role of providing quality transit.

CINCINNATTI Streetcar marked a milestone in the project to return trams to the city's streets on November 10, when the first of five LRVs being supplied by CAF ran under its own power for the first time on the 5.8km line.

.

The three-section low-floor vehicles are being assembled at CAF's Elmira plant in New York state and the second LRV is due to be delivered next month, which will enable power tests to be carried out with more than one vehicle in operation. The three remaining vehicles will be delivered in January and February.

USA: The main construction contract for the 58 km first phase of the Cincinnati Streetcar project was signed by the city council and the MPD joint venture of Messer, Prus and Delta Railroad on July 15, enabling the council to issue a notice to proceed.

.

Utility relocation works for the tram project are already underway. Notice to proceed with the main works had been planned for April 8, and the delay has led to a $492 933 increase in the price of the contract, which is now $714m. The council said this 'reasonable' increase includes higher materials, labour and equipment costs.

.

The planned opening date has also been put back from April 2 2016 to September 15 2016.

Streetcars in Cincinnati

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streetcars_in_Cincinnati

.

Streetcars were the main form of public transportation in Cincinnati, Ohio, at the end of the 19th century and the start of the 20th century.[2] The first electric streetcars began operation in 1889,[3] and at its maximum, the streetcar system had 222 miles (357 km) of track and carried more than 100 million passengers per year. A very unusual feature of the system was that cars on some of its routes traveled via inclined railways to serve areas on hills near downtown. With the advent of inexpensive automobiles and improved roads, transit ridership declined in the 20th century and the streetcar system closed in 1951.[3][4]

.

Construction of a new streetcar system, now known as the Cincinnati Bell Connector, began in 2012. Consisting initially of a single route, the new system opened on September 9, 2016.[5][6]

The Cincinnati Bell Connector, previously known as the Cincinnati Streetcar, is a streetcar system in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States. The system opened to passengers on September 9, 2016.[2] The streetcar operates on a 3.6-mile (5.8 km)[1] loop from The Banks, Great American Ball Park, and Smale Riverfront Park through Downtown Cincinnati and north to Findlay Market in the northern edge of the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood. Future extensions have been proposed to the Uptown area, home to the University of Cincinnati, the regional hospitals, and the Cincinnati Zoo; and to Northern Kentucky.

The project faced opposition on several occasions after being first proposed in 2007. Challenges included ballot initiatives to stop the project in 2009 and 2011, opposition from members of Cincinnati City Council, Governor John Kasich, and Mayor John Cranley (elected in 2013). However, both of the anti-rail ballot initiatives were rejected by voters, and a pro-streetcar majority was elected to City Council in 2011, allowing the project to move forward. Naming rights to the system were purchased by Cincinnati Bell in a $3.4 million, 10-year deal in August 2016.[3]

Streetcars in North America

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streetcars_in_North_America

.

Electric streetcars or trolley(car)s (North American English for the European word tram) were once the chief mode of public transit in hundreds of North American cities and towns. Most of the original urban streetcar systems were either dismantled in the mid-20th century or converted to other modes of operation, such as light rail. Today, only Toronto still operates a streetcar network essentially unchanged in layout and mode of operation.

.

Older surviving lines and systems in Boston, Cleveland, Mexico City, Newark, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and San Francisco were often infrastructure-heavy systems with tunnels, dedicated right of way, and long travel distances, or have largely rebuilt their streetcar systems as light rail systems. About 22 North American cities, starting with Edmonton, Calgary and San Diego, have installed new light rail systems, some of which run along historic streetcar corridors. A few recent cases feature mixed-traffic street-running operation like a streetcar. Portland, Oregon, Seattle, and Salt Lake City have built both modern light rail and modern streetcar systems, while Tucson and Atlanta have built new modern streetcar lines. A few other cities and towns have restored a small number of lines to run heritage streetcars either for public transit or for tourists; many are inspired by New Orleans' St. Charles Streetcar Line, generally viewed as the world's oldest continuously operating streetcar line.

A New Jersey Transit commuter train crashed into Hoboken Terminal during rush hour Thursday morning, killing one person and injuring more than 100 at one of the busiest transportation hubs in the Northeast.

.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) said 114 people were hurt, including the trains operator, who was critically injured. He said the engineer was cooperating with the investigation.

.

This train came at a high rate of speed into the station and crashed through all the barriers, bringing it all the way to the internal wall of the Hoboken terminal, Christie said. He added that officials would not speculate on the cause of the crash. We have no indication that this was anything but a tragic accident.

.

Accountant Jim Finan was sitting toward the rear of the first car when he realized the train was coming in much too fast.

.

We were getting to the platform, but we were still at full speed, Finan, 42, said. The train didnt slow down at allThe only thing that stopped the train is the fact that it slammed into the building.

.

The scene was horrendous. People were bleeding profusely from cuts to their head, he said, and one man seemed to be holding his severed thumb in place. Others had cuts on their hands. Finan pulled off the rubber around an emergency-exit window and another man pushed the window out. They both helped two women crawl out of the train before NJ Transit workers began opening the doors.

.

Christie lauded the resilience of northeast residents, who have weathered a succession of natural disasters and rail accidents in recent years and, most recently, a bombing in Manhattans Chelsea neighborhood that injured 31.

.

Regular commuters left the safety of where they were standing, to rush to the train, to help first responders evacuate injured people off the train, Christie said of the Hoboken crash. This region has developed a resilience that is admired by the rest of the world because of the way weve been tested.

.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo described the devastation at the afternoon news conference.

.

When you see the destruction up close, the silver lining is that theres only been one fatality so far, Cuomo said. Because the destruction is significant. And the power of train coming in is obviously devastating in its impact.

.

The New Jersey State Medical Examiner identified the crash victim as Fabiola Bittar de Kroon, 34, of Hoboken. Christie said she was killed by debris created by the crash.

.

I pray the number doesnt go up, said state Assemblyman Raj Mukherji (D), who represents Hoboken. Were just praying for those affected. And were praying that the death toll doesnt increase.

.

The crash, Christie said, appeared to be accidental in nature.

.

At about 8:45 a.m., a Pascack Valley Line train, which was traveling from Spring Valley, N.Y., crashed into Hoboken Terminal, according to New Jersey Transit.
.

Most of the people injured in the crash were in the first car or standing on the platform; passengers in the other cars were better able to escape, according to WABC.

.

New Jersey Transit said some passengers were trapped under the debris, though Christie said late Thursday morning that all of those people had been removed and transported to hospitals.

HOBOKEN, N.J. The engineer of the New Jersey Transit train that crashed into Hoboken Terminal on Thursday, killing one person and injuring more than 100 others during the busy morning commute, felt well rested and was unaware of any mechanical problems in the moments before the accident, federal investigators said on Sunday.

.

At a news conference in Hoboken, officials from the National Transportation Safety Board said they had interviewed the engineer, Thomas Gallagher, as well as the trains conductor, who was not identified, and still were no closer to determining the cause of the crash. It was the first fatal accident on New Jersey Transit trains since 1996, Bella Dinh-Zarr, the vice chairwoman of the safety board, said.

.

Ms. Dinh-Zarr said that Mr. Gallagher, 48, had no recollection of the accident itself and that the first thing he remembered was waking up on the floor of the cab afterward. She said Mr. Gallagher had told investigators that his cellphone was turned off and stored in a personal backpack, which remains in the cab of the control car. She also said Mr. Gallagher had reported that the train was traveling about 10 miles an hour when it entered Hoboken Terminal a fact that apparently contradicted initial reports that the train was moving at a higher speed.

.

New Jersey Transit announced on Sunday that all rail service in and out of Hoboken Terminal would remain suspended until further notice. However, the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail line at Hoboken was back in service, the agency said.

A eastbound Long Island Rail Road passenger train derailed Saturday night when it struck a work train sitting on the tracks just east of New Hyde Park station, LIRR officials said.

.

The derailment caused four minor injuries and the LIRR to suspend all service between Jamaica and Hicksville just after 9 p.m.

.

The most serious of injuries appears to be a broken leg, according to MTA police.

.

We have a train that is derailed a half mile east of New Hyde Park station, LIRR spokesman Salvatore Arena said.

.

Firefighters swarmed the scene at Old Broadway and Railroad Avenue, where at least three cars could be seen off the tracks.

Four injuries have been reported so far, and passengers were taken to area hospitals.

.

Passengers say the ride was 'uneventful', and seemed to be going at a normal speed, when they felt a sudden jolt, like a roller coaster. They could then feel the train slowly tilting.

NEW YORK (CBS New York) A CSX freight train derailed in the Bronx Wednesday morning, disrupting Amtrak service.

.

The derailment took place around 9:15 a.m. in the Oak Point rail yard near Bruckner Boulevard and Longwood Avenue in Hunts Point, CSX said in a statement.

.

Eight freight cars derailed. Seven were empty, and one contained lumber, CSX said.

.

No injuries were reported, and there were no reports of any hazardous materials involved, according to CSX.

.

One of the overturned freight cars sprawled across the Amtrak tracks, causing the delays in service.

.

Safety is CSXs highest priority, and our goal is zero accidents. CSX will work to identify the cause of this accident as part of the recovery effort, and any lessons learned will be applied to future operations, the company said in a statement. CSX apologizes to Amtrak passengers and any others who have been inconvenienced by this event.

.

Northeast Regional and Acela Express service between New York and New Rochelle was suspended Wednesday morning due to the derailment, but was partially restored by the afternoon. Service was fully restored Wednesday night.

Safety System Cited in Philly Amtrak Derailment Faces New Scrutiny
after Hoboken Crash

The deadly train crash in Hoboken, N.J., on Thursday renewed questions about the long-delayed rollout of Positive Train Control, the government-mandated rail safety system that came into the spotlight after eight people died in the 2015 Amtrak derailment in Philadelphia.

.

Officials could not say that the safety system - designed to slow or stop speeding trains - would have made a difference in the rush-hour NJ Transit crash that killed one person and injured more than 100 others. Bella Dinh-Zarr, vice chair of the National Transportation Safety Board, said investigators would look into whether Positive Train Control could have prevented the disaster.

.

But the accident is likely to intensify the scrutiny on rail lines like NJ Transit that have been slow to implement the system, and on Congress' decision last year to give railroads three more years to do so, setting a new deadline at the end of 2018.

.

"This is the kind of event that Positive Train Control is absolutely designed to prevent," Deborah Hersman, former NTSB chair, told CNN. The system can be a backup for an engineer who is distracted, tired, or suffering a medical emergency, she said.

.

PTC was not active in Philadelphia before the Amtrak derailment - when federal safety experts said it could have prevented the wreck - and it is not in use anywhere on NJ Transit lines.

.

In fact, the rail agency has made little progress installing the system since Congress mandated it in 2008. According to a June 29 progress report to the Federal Rail Administration, NJ Transit had not installed PTC equipment on any locomotives or track segments, had not trained any employees to use the system, and had none of the required radio towers in place.

.

"That's not a record that we want to see," Sen. Bob Menendez (D., N.J.) said Thursday after the Hoboken crash. "Personally, I don't believe there should have been an extension."

.

He noted that national transportation safety regulators concluded that PTC "would have intervened" to prevent a PATH train crash at the same station in 2011.

Hundreds of BART riders put a test model of the Bay Area transportation agencys fleet of the future through its paces at the Pleasant Hill Station Saturday.

.

The three-car test train came complete with brightly colored seats, six display monitors with real-time maps and three doors per car instead of the current two the latter meant to get passengers on and off the train more quickly.

.

Overnight testing for the train should start in the next two weeks, said Paul Oversier, assistant general manager for BART, with daytime runs starting in December and tests with passengers starting in early 2017.

BART shows off new train cars at first of 4 open house events

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY (BCN) Members of the public Saturday got an opportunity to check out new BART train cars that are part of the transit agencys Fleet of the Future that is expected to start taking passengers early next year.

.

BART brought three new train cars to the Pleasant Hill/Contra Costa Centre station Saturday for the first of four open house events.

.

snip

.

The new cars, built by Bombardier Transit Corp. in Plattsburgh, New York, have been tested at BARTs Hayward maintenance complex since earlier this year and 10 are expected to be available for use by the public by sometime early next year after they are certified for service by the California Public Utilities Commission, Oversier said.

.

Bombardier is expected to provide 60 more of the new cars by the end of 2017 and a total of 1,081 by the end of 2021, which combined with the current fleet of 669 cars would increase the number of BART train seats by 49 percent.

.

Oversier said comments from the public at open houses like Saturdays and at other outreach events in recent years about the new fleet have been helpful in determining the design of the cars.

.

The locations of poles for passengers to hold onto and increased access for wheelchair users were among the changes brought about by the publics input, he said.

.

With the new trains, BART is also looking to move away from associating the lines with their endpoints, such as the SFO-Pittsburg/Bay Point line, and instead associate them with their color on the BART map, Oversier said.

.

The front of the train will highlight the color of the route, as will the digital interior screens, which also feature next stop information.

.

Its easier for people that are not familiar, not daily riders, to relate to a given color when they look at a map, Oversier said.

Commuters Earn Sneak Peek of BART's 'Fleet of the Future' Test Train

Aside from a design overhaul, BART says that the new fleet will be quieter, cooler, more comfortable, and easier to enter and exit than the current trains running throughout the Bay Area system. BART has also introduced a mapping feature that will let riders know exactly where they are at any time as well as installing a digital display on each car to signal what station is coming next.

.

The soon-to-be-introduced trains do have four less seats per car, but more cars will be used on each train, BART said. A grand total of 1,081 cars are set to be unveiled by 2021, which would increase BART's seating capacity by 49 percent.

.

Once the testing process, which has reached an 82 percent completion mark as of Saturday, is finished and the California Public Utilities Commission has given the green light, BART plans to role out the fleet as soon as possible.

Some of Melbourne's busiest intersections will be reprogrammed to give greater priority to trams, as transport authorities grapple with worsening road congestion and a historical surge in tram patronage.

.

Passenger numbers on Melbourne's trams have soared 12 per cent in just one year, figures published late last week show, to 203.8 million trips in 2015-16. Patronage numbers have suddenly hit levels the city has not seen since private car travel began to supersede public transport use in the 1950s.

.

Public Transport Victoria has attributed the rise to the introduction of the free tram zone in 2015 and to Melbourne's apartment boom, which is concentrated along inner-city tram corridors.

.

"Since 2012 more than a third of building approvals for new dwellings have been nearby tram routes," the authority said in its annual report. "As these dwellings are built and occupied, this leads to a significant population growth in the tram catchment."

.

Urban Melbourne has begun to track the explosion in development along Melbourne's tram lines in a series that reveals, for example, almost 3000 apartments approved or in construction along tram route 19.

.

Tram speeds in Melbourne are among the slowest in the world, at a network-wide average of about 16km/h, according to Yarra Trams, and PTV's annual report noted that "trams continue to be affected by traffic congestion".

.

In an effort to improve this, the Andrews government will introduce two trials of new technology on the roads next year.

.

Minister for Roads Luke Donnellan? said it is hoped the intelligent transport technology trial will reduce congestion.

.

"Improving the flow of trams at intersections will make services more reliable and reduce congestion on our roads, helping to get passengers where they need to go, on time," he said.

.

The first trial will involve installing devices inside trams and traffic signal boxes, which will communicate with each other to alert the traffic lights to approaching trams.

.

The co-operative intelligent transport system will be more responsive than the current tram priority signals that sit beneath the surface of the road, which are triggered each time a tram passes, regardless of the level of congestion.

"At 6:35 p.m., Mr. McBeth turned the handle a trifle, the car instantly started and before the passengers realized it, the car was rolling steadily and smoothly up East Avenue while the crowd which lined the walk cheered. ... Up the hill the car glided without any lessening of speed, and when Knecht's Corner was reached, everybody knew that the system was a success."

.

As described by a Kankakee Gazette reporter, mass transit had come to Kankakee on July 18, 1891, in the form of the electric trolley car. The car that made the initial trip up the East Avenue tracks, then turned onto Court Street, was 16 feet in length and could seat 20 passengers. The exterior was painted orange and yellow, with gold striping, and emblazoned on each side with "Kankakee Electric Street Railway" in large silver letters.

.

Regular trolley service began two days later, linking the city's two railroad depots (Illinois Central and Big Four) and the Riverview Hotel near what is now Cobb Park. The system quickly expanded to provide service to the county fairgrounds, Kankakee Browns baseball field and Mound Grove Cemetery on the northern edge of the city; the Kankakee Driving Park race track on east Court Street, and the Eastern Illinois State Hospital (now Shapiro Developmental Center) south of the river. In 1894, tracks were extended eastward to serve Electric Park, an amusement park and picnic grounds in what is now Beckman Park.

.

A second trolley company, the North Kankakee Street Railway, laid tracks in 1892 from the Kankakee City limits through the new industrial community of North Kankakee (now Bradley), and into Bourbonnais, terminating at St. Viator College (today, Olivet Nazarene University).

.

The separate trolley systems were purchased by a New York company in 1894 and physically connected into a single operation. The electric wire used to connect the two systems was salvaged from the 1893 Chicago World's Fair.

.

Similar to today's mass transit systems, the trolleys carried shoppers to stores, workers to their jobs and families to theaters, parks and other recreational destinations. But the cars also were used for other purposes. In 1901, a group of Kankakee women "took over" the system, decorated the cars and collected the fares to raise funds for the YMCA.

.

It also was possible to reserve one of the cars for a private event, such as the 1904 party held by 18-year-old Lomira Perry and her sisters for about 60 of their friends. "We rode back and forth from Schuyler Avenue in downtown Kankakee to St. Viator's College in Bourbonnais," she recalled. "We decorated the car and had music and refreshments. It was such fun!"

DOUALA, Cameroon (Reuters) - More than 70 people were killed and over 600 injured when a packed passenger train crashed in Cameroon on Friday, the president announced on Saturday, declaring a national day of mourning to commemorate the dead.

.

The packed Camrail train had been traveling from the capital Yaounde to the port city of Douala. It derailed at around 11 a.m. local time (1000 GMT) near the station in the town of Eseka, 120 km (75 miles) west of the capital, causing carriages to overturn.

.

My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families of the Camrail train derailment in Eseka. Over 70 passengers died and 600 wounded in the accident, President Paul Biya, who is traveling abroad, wrote on his official Facebook page.

.

I instructed the government to provide full assistance to the survivors, while investigations will be made to determine the cause of the derailment.

.

The death toll, put at 55 late on Friday, rose after some injured victims later died, Communications Minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary said.

.

Biya decreed that Monday would be a national day of mourning with flags flown at half-mast.

.

Witnesses, including a Reuters reporter traveling on the train, said rail workers had added additional carriages to accommodate extra passengers before its departure, though it is not clear if that decision contributed to the accident.

.

Camrail, a unit of French industrial group Bollore, said in a statement it was working with Cameroonian authorities to ensure care for the injured and support for victims families.

.

Technical investigations are under way currently to determine the causes of this dreadful accident and the conclusions, as soon as they are known, will be communicated, the emailed statement said.

.

Work began during the night to remove the derailed wagons from the line - one of the main routes for goods and passengers between the main port and the interior.

As the world's urban centers grow, getting around them becomes increasingly difficult. In some cities, traffic is congested all day long and rush hour can last for several hours. Fortunately, there are a number of innovations in public transportation specifically aimed at alleviating those woes. While traditional buses simply add to street traffic and subways aren't feasible in all areas, engineers are looking to public transit options that can go over or around regular car traffic, making for some easier ways to get from Point A to Point B without spending hours sniffing exhaust. Elsewhere in the world, underwater floating tunnels will reduce the need for ferry rides, and a unique modular transport system could completely revolutionize long-distance travel for both people and cargo. Read on for all the details about the next generation of transportation, including some developments that will be up and running in less than five years.

While a full-fledged Hyperloop track from San Francisco and Los Angeles is many years away, the list of advantages is already miles long. Initially conceived by Elon Musk, the Hyperloop promises an ultra high-speed passenger and cargo transportation option that can travel up to 700 miles per hour. Last year, Hyperloop Transportation Technologies CEO Dirk Ahlborn said the ride might even be free for passengers, instead drawing income from cargo shippers and passenger upgrades. The pod-like transit system could be operational as early as 2019, when it would reduce the 380-mile trip from San Francisco to LA to a cool 30 minutes.

Cameroon Train Crash: Scores Killed, Hundreds Injured

Crowded passenger train goes off the tracks along the route that links capital Yaounde with economic hub Douala.

Transport Minister Edgar Alain Mebe Ngo'o said Friday's accident took place near the central town of Eseka - 120km west of the capital Yaounde - as the train travelled to the economic hub of Douala.

.

"The cause of the accident is not yet clear," said the minister, via state broadcaster CRTV, adding that several of the injured were in a very serious condition.

.

Rail officials said the train had been carrying 1,300 passengers, instead of the usual 600. The collapse of a bridge along the main highway between the capital and Douala had prompted more people to undertake the journey by rail.

.

Passenger Joel Bineli told Reuters news agency he saw three dismembered bodies on the tracks at the accident site.

.

Photos posted on social media purporting to have been taken at the scene showed several wagons overturned on a slope beside the tracks.

.

"There was a loud noise. I looked back and the wagons behind us left the rails and started rolling over and over. There was a lot of smoke," said a Reuters journalist travelling on the train.

.

He added that prior to the train's departure from Yaounde, a railway employee said eight additional wagons had been added to the normally nine-wagon train in order to accommodate extra passengers.

.

It remains unclear whether that played a role in the accident.

.

"Intervention and security teams have been mobilised," the rail company Camrail said.

.

The route is one of the busiest in the country with trains to Chad and the Central African Republic also using the axis, which has a poor safety record.

"There was a loud noise. I looked back and the wagons behind us left the rails and started rolling over and over. There was a lot of smoke," said a Reuters journalist travelling in a wagon near the front of the train.

.

He said that, before its departure from Yaounde, a railway employee said additional wagons had been added to the train to accommodate extra passengers, though it was unclear if that played a role in the accident.

"There are the bodies of women, children. There are many," said one employee of Camrail, which is operated by France's Bollore Railways, speaking from the scene of the accident. He said three of his colleagues were among the victims.

.

Joel Bineli, a passenger, told Reuters he saw the dismembered bodies on the tracks at the accident site.

.

Social media users posted photos taken at the scene of the accident which showed several wagons overturned on a slope beside the rail line.

.

"Rescue workers arrived and they are pulling bodies from the wagon. I've already counted around 40 bodies they've removed," said Rachelle Paden, another passenger.

Many rail lines in west and central Africa have a reputation for poor maintenance and failing to respect safety norms. Derailments are relatively common.

Brill Co. Trolleys Traveled the World

Philadelphia boasts the largest trolley network in the United States, serving more than 31 million passengers a year on 68 miles of track. As SEPTA plans a $700 million upgrade, consider the John G. Brill Co., one of the largest manufacturers of streetcars in the world.

.

Brill's story began with the arrival in Philadelphia of a 30-year-old German immigrant, cabinetmaker Johann Georg Brill. After working at a local railroad car firm, Brill and his son struck out on their own. Americanizing their name, the pair founded the eponymous company in a rowhouse at 31st and Chestnut Streets in 1868-69.

.

Many of Brill's initial designs were for horse- or mule-drawn streetcars, with ungulates still the machine's motive force. With the electrification of streetcars, Brill presciently pivoted toward trolley manufacturing.

.

The company's reputation for quality and innovation soon traveled far beyond Philadelphia. Its first foreign sale in 1873, to Mexico, marked the beginning of Brill's global reach. At its zenith, the company manufactured more than one-third of the United States' trolley cars, and was one of the world's largest producers of undercarriages. The only continent without a Brill customer was Antarctica.

.

Salesmanship was not Brill's only asset; quality and innovation were what he was known for. The company, its engineers, and its employees held hundreds of patents on everything from signal bells and door-opening mechanisms to full car designs.
