Railroads and Regulators Resist Providing Details

Information that state and federal government agencies collect about train derailments, particularly those that cause crude oil spills, is, at best, difficult for the public to see.

.

Huge amounts of data about collisions, derailments and other mishaps that happen along railroads in the United States are collected every year.

.

Some of it is compiled by the industry and distributed directly to the public upon request. But some is buried in databases that government officials are slow to release, if they release at all.

.

For example, the U.S. Department of Transportation requires railroads to submit annual reports to state emergency response officials estimating how many trains carrying crude oil from the Bakken shale region pass through each county.

.

Yet in many states, the public is not allowed to see those reports.

.

A request by The Columbus Dispatch to see those reports in Ohio went unanswered for months.

.

When the request was answered, only reports from two of three railroads that move crude oil from the Bakken oil fields were provided by the State Emergency Response Commission. The third was supplied only after The Columbus Dispatch pointed out the discrepancy.

.

In some instances, railroads have sued to try to keep reports secret. Some states allow the public to review only limited information from those reports.

.

In Illinois, for example, the state emergency response commission provided to The Dispatch railroad reports that included the number of crude oil trains traveling through each county but redacted the specific rail lines.

In the report West Virginia officials released, counties where crude oil moves by rail were blacked out as were specific rail lines amounts of crude oil hauled. Melissa Cross, coordinator of West Virginias State Emergency Response Commission, said the state lets the railroad decide what information should be made public.

.

That is what the CSX determines to be proprietary and confidential information, and it is our policy that we do not release confidential and proprietary information, Cross said.

No Way to Run a Railroad

Increase in hazardous cargo calls for more effort to prevent accidents

Sunday December 27, 2015 5:20 AM

Increasing oil production in the United States has helped bring down costs and make America more energy-independent. Without updated infrastructure to handle the transport of this oil, though, the boom has come with a price: more potentially hazardous and life-threatening spills, including in densely populated areas around Columbus.

.

A derailment and explosion of ethanol-carrying train cars near the Ohio State Fairgrounds in July 2012 is just one of dozens of crashes and spills that have happened across the country in the past five years. In looking at these incidents, Dispatch reporters Rick Rouan and Laura Arenschield found in reporting their three-part series Wrong Track earlier this week that two-thirds of them were caused by human error and track defects; investigators determined that the accident near the fairgrounds three years ago was caused by a broken rail.

.

snip
.

So what to do? So far, government regulators have focused largely on upgrading rail cars to make them less likely to spill their contents in the event of a crash. These new requirements will mean about $1.7 billion in upgrades to tanker cars.

.

But that doesnt get at the root of the problem.

If the car stays on the track, Im pretty sure absolutely nothing happens, said Brigham McCown, former director of the U.S. Department of Transportations Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration. The first question you always ask is not how to reduce the consequences of the accident, but how do you keep the accident from happening in the first place.

.

Tracks are not inspected and repaired often and well enough.

Yorkshire Flooding: Trains Cancelled across County

A number of rail lines across Yorkshire are closed today in the wake of severe flooding - with rail officials warning commuters not to travel unless absolutely necessary.

The line between Rochdale and Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, on the Leeds-Manchester route, was shut on Sunday after severe flooding left Walsden station in Lancashire under several feet of water.

.

The railway at Kirkstall, Leeds, was four feet under water, with no services between Leeds and Bradford, Skipton and Bradford or Leeds and Ilkley. Trains between Bradford Forster Square and Ilkley are expected to run as scheduled, every two hours - but delays were already being reported on Sunday morning.

.

Trains between Leeds and Carlisle / Morecombe will start / terminate at Skipton.

.

Network Rail workers have been drafted in to help Northern Rail assess the condition of around five bridges and viaducts across Lancashire, Cumbria and Yorkshire.

.

A spokesperson for Northern Rail said: We are working closely with our colleagues at Network Rail to keep the disruption down to a minimum and will be examining the condition of all our routes first thing in the morning.

Sound Transit formulating ballot proposal for November 2016

Tacoma possibilities include streetcar along South 19th Street, inter-city rail to mall

Ballot question could set a 25-year, $48-billion regional transit plan

When President Obama signed a $305 billion highway bill this month, he reauthorized a grant program that is being leaned on for nearly half the $153 million cost of the Tacoma Link expansion through the Hilltop neighborhood to South 19th Street. A subsequent budget deal meant the projects $75 million federal grant had officially cleared Congress, bringing construction of the long-awaited streetcar segment closer.

.

Before that project ever breaks ground, Sound Transit is working up plans to ask the regions voters to approve another long-term plan that could include stretching the Tacoma Link line even farther: 3.7 miles straight west on South 19th Street to Tacoma Community College.

.

A separate project under consideration would stretch plans for city-to-city light rail, the Link train, beyond the Tacoma Dome station to the Tacoma Mall, making it possible to ride the train from the geographic center of the city to Sea-Tac Airport and Seattle.

.

With Tacoma projected to gain 127,000 new residents in the next 25 years a 62 percent increase over its current population Sound Transits estimates say that if built, each of the two proposed projects would carry 6,000 to 8,000 riders daily.

.

Their combined price tag for 7.1 miles of new urban rail would be more than $1.5 billion, about 10 times the money being spent to bring the citys streetcar line from 1.6 miles of downtown to a four-mile circuit serving mixed-use and residential neighborhoods.

.

Planning documents say those projects have the potential to help shape the growing city, from reducing car traffic to encouraging denser pedestrian-oriented development.

.

In the real world, they face several hurdles.

NEW DELHI: Even as India signed a Rs. 98,000-crore pact with Japan for a high-speed bullet train linking Mumbai and Ahmedabad, the on-time performance of the country's express trains remains a challenge, especially during winters.

.

A shortage of dedicated tracks for goods and passenger trains in the country, withering infrastructure and inbuilt inefficiencies in the railways are leading to regular delays of its express trains, including its most prestigious ones. The winter fog does no ..

.

According to former railway minister Dinesh Trivedi of Trinamool Congress, unless a dedicated freight corridor is started, there wouldn't be enough money available to invest in running passenger trains on time.

.

"Our railway is in a financial crisis and the operating ratio (company's operating expenses as a percentage of revenue) is 110 percent. We don't have enough money to even replace the old assets like the tracks, signals or locomotives," Trivedi told IANS.

.

He said he was not against bullet trains, but the railways were falling short of Rs 25,000 crore every year. "Had I been the minister I would have given more money to the dedicated freight corridor. This would have helped the economy. The bullet trains will only help the Japanese economy," Trivedi said.

.

A quick survey by IANS showed that express trains were running late between 14 minutes and seven hours. The Mumbai-Central-New Delhi Rajdhani Express was late by 15 minutes on December ..

.

Among the other trains, the Saraighat Express (Guwahati to Howrah) was 14 minutes late on December 20, 14 minutes late on December 21 and 40 minutes late on December 22. The Lucknow Swarna Shatabdi Express (New Delhi to Lucknow) was late by 1:03 hours on December 21, by one hour on December 22, 15 minutes on December 23 and 55 minutes on December 24.

.

The Garib Rath running from Saharsa to Amritsar was late by 6:40 hours on December 20 and by 25 minutes on December 21. The Kerala Express ..

Tools in the Statistics Research Guide for
Finding Data Sources and Manipulating the Data

.

.

I am sure that many scholars and researchers do statistical analyis in their research or need to find statistical data relevant to the topics they are researching. My Statistics Research Guide may help some of you with this research.

.

First of all my United States Government agency section now has entries for around 40 government agencies, many with involvement or content important to tourism and its related fields.

.

Statistics Research Guide: United States Federal Agency Section

.

http://guides.temple.edu/statistics-sources/gov-stats#s-lg-box-wrapper-9458752

OR

http://tinyurl.com/jl3c428

.

For all agencies with content and links about their statistical resources on their website, this information including links are reproduced. Some government agencies use Bing for their site search engine, others use a Google Custom search. Those using Bing may require using this symbol

(|)

in place of the word "OR" in a search statement like

statistics OR statistical OR data

In addition to site search engine results for statistical content on sites using Google for their site search engine, I included those using Bing in cases where it was possible to conduct a rational search and also obtain
a persistent link to the search results.

.

More importantly there are around 19 searches for the name of the agency and the terms for statistics so that one can look at many of the statistical content or the ways in which statistics have been used from the agency. It may be interesting to know that each agency provides lots of statistical sources with lots of uses to which they have been put, but this does not help with tourism research projects specifically. Fortunately it is possible to add search terms to the left side of the search already in place to customize the search to a specific need.

.

Consider this agency entry

=====================

Now if an "irrelevant" agency can find all of these tourism related research reports and articles, can one imagine what a relevant agency has hidden in Google Scholar and the other sources that I queried for this content. This is a work in progress, additional agencies will be added.

.

The guide also has in the main section a list of databases and each that can be searched for a complex statement shows the number of statistical sources found in each database.

.

Handbooks, guides and other books listed in this guide are linked to a Google Books or Google Scholar search of the title, so the users may find a preview of the book but will find a group of sources that used that book title in their publication, so that in depth learning about the subject content of the book.

.

By the way I also do these kinds of tools (amount of tourism content in each database, links to searches of book titles in Google Scholar OR Google Books) in my Tourism Research Guide.

http://guides.temple.edu/tourism-guide

If there is an interest, I will do another post that explains what is going on with the links throughout the government agency section to searches in Google Web Search that employ the Site: ----- command in quite a few of the search links.

.

I hope that this will help some of the excellent scholars who are members of this list to have an additional technique for finding statistical sources or for learning ways to use and manipulate statistical data from government agencies. Keep in mind scholarly articles found in searches of
Google Scholar, Temple Summon Search or one of my SITE: searches are likely to have a methodology section that could contain tips you need to
work with raw data using software and database tools.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- SEPTA announced Saturday night services will resume Sunday morning after this weekend's storm.

.

"There are a number of challenges resulting from the storm, which has delivered snowfall totals that exceeded forecasted amounts," said SEPTA General Manager Jeffrey D. Knueppel.

.

As a result, officials say the storm has caused the expected 4 a.m. start time to be pushed back to 10 for many services; longer for certain routes and lines.

.

Below is an update on the status of SEPTA's services for Sunday:

.

-Market Frankford & Broad Street Lines: Service has been running on or close to normal schedules, and is expected to continue overnight and into Sunday.

.

-Norristown High-Speed Line: Snow clearing operations with a jet engine are continuing tonight between 69th Street and Bryn Mawr. Once this is cleared, the jet engine will be deployed to clear the remaining portion of the line. We will give a more detailed update at 8 a.m. Sunday.

http://www.nycsubway.org/wiki/SEPTA_Rt._100:_Norristown_Line

.

-Bus: Service will be restored on a route-by-route basis starting 10 a.m. Sunday morning, with a focus on priority routes that feed customers to the Broad Street and Market-Frankford Lines. Priority City Routes include 14, 18, 21, 33, 42, 52, 56, 58, 59, 60, and 66.

The operator of an Amtrak train that derailed last year, killing eight and injuring more than 200, recalled the harrowing moments leading up to the crash at more than 100 mph, including thinking to himself "Okay well this is it, I'm going over," according to new documents, after initially telling investigators that he couldn't recall them.

.

The documents also say that black box data from the train showed that it was at or near full throttle in the 55 seconds before it hit a curve traveling at more than double the speed limit of 50 mph.

.

Brandon Bostian, the operator of the train that derailed in Philadelphia last May, told investigators on Nov. 10 that he remembered "holding onto the controls tightly" as the train rounded a curve, according to documents released by the NTSB today.

.

The engine felt as though it were tilting over, he said, according to the documents.

.

He said that his body lurched to the right.

.

I remember feeling my body lurch to the right...I remember feelings as though I was going too fast around a curve, he added. In response to that feeling, I put the train brake on.

.

According to data from the train's black box, 55 seconds before the accident curve, Bostian applied the full throttle, or notch 8, and stayed there for 30 seconds, the NTSB documents said.

.

He briefly dropped down to notch 7 before moving back up to notch 8 for 20 seconds. About three seconds before the derailment, while traveling at 106 mph -- more than twice the 50 mph speed limit -- he applied the emergency brake, according to the documents. Moments later, the 98-ton train derailed, traveling at 102 mph.

.

Bostian, who suffered a severe concussion, told investigators during a May 15 interview his last memory of the trip occurred well before the incident. He remains on unpaid leave and has not been criminally charged.

.

After months passed after the accident, he now has a sudden memory.

.

PORT RICHMOND (WPVI) -- As investigators try to determine whether Amtrak train 188 was hit by something just before it crashed, for the first time we're hearing the frantic call made by transit police about another incident on the same night.

.

Action News has obtained a SEPTA police scanner call from the night of the terrible incident.

.

In it they are responding to reports that a SEPTA train was hit by an unknown object.

.

"An unknown object made contact with that train shattering the windshield," one person is heard saying.

.

The engineer of that SEPTA train is expected to be interviewed by the NTSB this weekend.

.

SEPTA says something hit the front window of one of their trains, about 11 minutes before the Amtrak train crashed, killing eight people.

.

That's what the SEPTA engineer was discussing with Amtrak engineer Brandon Bostian over the radio shortly before derailment. The conversation, which was captured on tape, was turned over to the NTSB.

.

Meanwhile, during an appearance on 'This Week with George Stephanopoulos' on Sunday morning, Robert Sumwalt of the NTSB said there was no communication between Bostian to the dispatch center to suggest that a projectile had hit the ill-fated train.

.

However, Sumwalt did not discuss the communication between Bostian and the SEPTA engineer.

Ten Dead, 17 Critically Injured
After Head-on Train Crash in Bavaria, Germany

.

.

(CNN)Ten people are dead and 17 are critically injured after a head-on collision between two trains in Germany's southern state of Bavaria Tuesday, police say.

.

At least 63 people on board suffered less serious injuries, police said. They said there were about 150 passengers on board the two trains.

.

The crash occurred shortly before 7 a.m. Tuesday local time near the spa town of Bad Aibling, about 60 kilometers (37 miles) southeast of the Bavarian capital of Munich.

.

The trains collided at a bend on the Mangfall Valley Railway, a single-track regional rail line between the towns of Rosenheim and Holzkirchen, German Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt said.

.

"There's a curve there, so we must assume that the train drivers must not have been able to see each other beforehand," he told reporters at a news conference.

.

One of the trains had "drilled" into the other, he said, leaving a carriage "totally dismantled."

.

He described the scene as a "horrible picture," saying it was estimated the trains had been traveling about 100 kph (62 mph) at the moment of impact.

.

"This is a difficult hour for the railways in Germany," said Dobrindt, describing the crash as "one of the biggest we have had for years."

.

"We cannot imagine that such an accident can happen here," he said.

.

The two drivers of the trains appeared to be among the dead, although identification of the victims was still in progress, according to a statement from Transdev, the parent company of train company Meridian.

.

Upper Bavaria police tweeted Wednesday that no passengers were unaccounted for. Police had earlier said that they believed as many as two passengers were missing.

.

'We really have no clue'

.

How the two trains came to be running directly toward each other on the same track is still unclear, authorities say, and they are reluctant to speculate too much before data recorders are analyzed.

Passengers on board a Megabus headed from Chicago to Minneapolis had a terrifying ordeal on Sunday after the bus caught fire.

.

The fire started around 12:15 p.m. local time on the southbound lane on Route 41 in Illinois, according to Lake Forest fire officials. Forty passengers were on board.

.

snip

.

The bus erupted in flames just moments after all the passengers and the driver had exited the bus. The bus sustained extensive damage and the cause of the fire is under investigation, fire officials said. No one was injured.

.

"Safety is our top priority and Megabus is fully cooperating with the authorities and their investigation into the incident," according to a statement from Sean Hughes, director of corporate affairs for Coach USA North America (Megabus is a subsidiary of Coach USA).

.

Many of the passengers said there were signs of problems early on in the trip.

.

Some people said they smelled burning, Lucas Peterson, a New York Times columnist who happened to be on board, said. The driver kept pulling over to the side so it seemed clear there was something wrong with the bus.

WASHINGTON -- The Ventura County District Attorney in California on Monday filed a misdemeanor charge of vehicular manslaughter against a pickup truck driver who crashed into and derailed a commuter train there last year.

.

The charge, announced by Gregory Totten on Monday, stems from the Feb. 24 accident that resulted in the death of the train engineer, 62-year-old Glenn William Steele and 34 others injured in the crash in Oxnard, California. The filing came two days before the statute of limitations for such a charge.

.

Jose Alejandro Sanchez-Ramirez, 54, of Yuma, Arizona, was initially jailed by investigators but was released. Police found the disoriented driver of the demolished Ford F-450 pickup 1.6 miles from the crossing 45 minutes after the crash. His attorney didn't immediately respond to phone, text and email messages from The Associated Press for comment.

.

But attorney Ron Bamieh told reporters last year that his client accidentally turned onto the tracks and made repeated attempts to get the vehicle off the rails, then ran for his life as the train approached.

.

The announcement notes that he "did not notify authorities of his predicament prior to the collision and derailment."

.

Bamieh has said Sanchez-Ramirez, who doesn't speak English well, tried to get help from a passer-by, attempted to call his employer, and eventually reached his son to help him speak with police.

.

The National Transportation Safety Board said Sanchez-Ramirez turned right 55 feet prematurely onto train tracks in what it termed a "mistake" - getting caught there - during the dark early morning hours.

.

The investigation took nearly a year to complete and was submitted for review Feb. 10. Sanchez-Ramirez is scheduled to be arraigned March 23 in Ventura County.

DC's First Streetcar Opened in 1862. Here's What it Was Like.

The DC Streetcar will start carrying passengers on Saturday, but that won't be the first time we've seen a streetcar's opening day. DC's first streetcar system opened in the middle of the Civil War after taking only six months to build. It ran horse-drawn streetcars along Pennsylvania Avenue, and was an instant hit.

.

I recently wrote about the 100-year history of streetcars in the District in my book, Capital Streetcars: Early Mass Transit in Washington, DC. Like my recent post about how streetcars shaped DC's Eckington neighborhood, the following has been adapted from the book.

.

In the early 1850s, omnibusesrickety stagecoach-like wagons that could hold maybe a dozen riderswere the only "mass transit" available in Washington. As early as 1852, Gilbert Vanderwerken, an ambitious businessman who owned the city's omnibus company, petitioned Congress for the right to establish the city's first streetcar system, running from Georgetown to Capitol Hill, but it didn't have the political backing to make it through Congress.

.

Meanwhile, other cities rapidly built streetcar systems: Brooklyn in 1853, Boston in 1856, Philadelphia in 1858, and Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Chicago, and Cincinnati in 1859. Finally, in May 1862one year into the Civil War and ten years after streetcars had first been proposedCongress agreed to one in DC, passing a law incorporating the Washington & Georgetown Railroad.

.

The project had a very tight timeline

.

The charter specified three lines: an east-west route along Pennsylvania Avenue from Georgetown to the Navy Yard; a north-south route along Seventh Street from Boundary Street (Florida Avenue NW) to the Seventh Street wharves in Southwest; and another north-south route along Fourteenth Street from Boundary Street to Pennsylvania Avenue.

.

Although Congress had dawdled on authorizing the railway, it required the new company to put the first segment of its line into operation within 60 working days of incorporationan astonishingly short timespan considering that a war was on and no cars, ties, rails, or other materiel were on hand. Nevertheless, luck was on the side of the fledgling railway. Construction began within a few weeks; rails were ordered and arrived in time for a crew of 40 to begin laying them in June 1862.

.

snip

.

The first two cars for the new railway arrived from the manufacturer on July 11th. They were elegant pieces of craftsmanship intended to entice well-to-do riders who had no previous experience of public transportation. The Evening Star described them in detail: "The seats on the sides are covered with fine silk velvet, and the windows, which are stained and plain glass combined, are furnished with cherry sash and poplar blinds, beside handsome damask curtains.

.

snip

.

In October, with all three lines nearly finished, the company's directors donated twenty old omnibuses to the army for use as ambulances. They were much needed for the war effort and apparently served that purpose well.

.

People loved riding the streetcar

.

Praise for the new streetcars ran high as Washingtonians began shaping their daily routines around them. People from all walks of life took to the new form of transport. "I rode all the way from Georgetown. What a blessing & a comfort," wrote Martha Custis Williams, the great great granddaughter of Martha Washington, who lived at Georgetown's stately Tudor Place mansion.

.

In July 1863, The National Intelligencer commented on the Seventh Street line, which had opened nine months earlier: "We cannot help admiring the regularity with which the cars on this road now run. There is no detention to passengers whatsoever. The energy manifested by the gentlemanly conductors meets the approbation of everyone who rides them. We cannot help speaking of the politeness of Conductor Steptoe T. Tune. His obliging manners and amiability give him the praise of all who chance in his car."

.

Once fully operational, the Washington & Georgetown Railroad scheduled cars to arrive on a five-minute headway and charged a five-cent fare with a free transfer between routes.

Washington Streetcar Stumbles Could Benefit de Blasios Plan

WASHINGTON The empty streetcars started their test runs down H Street more than a year ago, a slow-rolling taunt for a fast-changing neighborhood left to wonder when the line might finally open.

.

The promise of the streetcar has already helped to revitalize the 2.4-mile corridor east of Union Station, city officials say. But many who live and work here are decidedly indifferent, complaining that the line, which is set to open on Saturday, is too short, and that the streetcars clog traffic.

.

Its a big, in-the-way elephant, said Valentine Jackson, a barber who works on H Street. You can walk faster than it would take to get you from one end to the other.

.

A similar dream of spurring economic development has driven New York City to propose building what could be the largest new streetcar system in the country, along the Brooklyn and Queens waterfront. But Washingtons experience serves as a cautionary tale, underlining the challenges even supporters say could complicate the de Blasio administrations plans.

.

Asked about Washingtons troubles, Mayor Bill de Blasio, a Democrat, predicted a smoother path for New York.

.

We love Washington, D.C., but were different, Mr. de Blasio said at a news conference this month to promote the $2.5 billion Brooklyn Queens Connector proposal. I think we have tremendous capacity here for major projects.

.

His transportation commissioner, Polly Trottenberg, said that she had spoken with officials in Washington and that New York would learn from their mistakes.

The DC Streetcar Is Finally Running

More than a decade after DC officials first raised the idea, and seven years after the tracks were laid down, Washingtons first streetcar in more than half a century entered service Saturday morning, finally rolling down H St. and Benning Rd., Northeast.

.

Today we start the DC Streetcar, Leif Dormsjo, the District Department of Transportations director, said at a ceremony packed with current and former city officials and transit geeks.

.

The streetcar, which has cost the city about $200 million since it was first conceived, missed numerous deadlines over the years, held up by several bouts of faulty planning and shoddy record-keeping. Dormsjo, the seventh person to hold DDOTs top job since the streetcar was first conceived, got much of the credit for finally getting it running.

.

But the agonizing wait for streetcar service couldnt be overlooked by its biggest boosters.

.

On behalf of four mayors, many DDOT directors, thank you for your patience, Mayor Muriel Bowser said, addressing residents of the neighborhood that bloomed around H Street in the years since the line was first announced. I inherited all of the good things happening in the District of Columbia, and I inherited some of the lulus.

.

Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, DCs representative in Congress, was nearly in disbelief before boarding the inaugural run. Weve been waiting so long for this streetcar, it feels like magic, she said. Is this really happening?

DC's first electric streetcar helped build Eckington

DC got its first electric streetcar in 1888 when the Eckington & Soldiers Home Railway went into operation. A ban on overhead wires kept it from running downtown, and the company ultimately went out of business because it couldn't find another option.

.

I recently wrote about the 100-year history of streetcars in the District, from 1862 to 1962 (the span from the first and last times a streetcar carried passengers in DC), in my book, Capital Streetcars: Early Mass Transit in Washington, DC. The following story about the Eckington line has been adapted from the book.

.

Eckington developed alongside the streetcar

.

Eckington was perhaps the first "true" streetcar suburb in the District in the sense that it was designed from the start as a streetcar destination. It originally had been the estate of Joseph Gales Jr. (17861860), publisher of the National Intelligencer newspaper and one of the city's early mayors. He had named it Eckington after his birthplace in England.

.

Real estate investor Colonel George Truesdell (18421921) bought the Eckington tract in 1887 with the idea of building a modern bedroom suburb on it. Truesdell laid out his new subdivision as an idyllic suburban community with large house lots, stunning views of the city and desirable modern amenitiesincluding paved streets, stone sidewalks and electric streetlightsthat more established District neighborhoods still didn't have.

.

In 1888, Truesdell obtained a Congressional charter for a streetcar company specifically to serve his pretty new suburb. The line would include an electric station to power the railway as well as the brilliant streetlights to light up Eckington at night. Poles went into the center of the roadway to carry the overhead wires for the streetcars. It was an ideal arrangement.

.

snip

.

The struggle over overhead wires continued, but ultimately failed

.

The railway soldiered on, its fight for overhead wires soon degenerating into a game of chicken with the Star and the DC commissioners. Exasperated that an overhead trolley system could not be installed to replace the failed battery cars, the railway converted its downtown extension to horsecars, ignoring the fact that horsecars were supposed to have been phased out by that time.

.

More horsecar lines were added in 1894 while the original overhead trolley line along New York Avenue and to the north continued to operate. The company's directors figured that people would be so fed up with these outmoded cars that Congress would give in and allow them to install an overhead trolley system.

.

The Evening Star editors were doubly upset about this turn of events. Not only were horsecars back, but the Eckington company had also missed a revised July 1, 1895 deadline for taking down the poles and overhead wires on New York Avenue, which the newspaper referred to as "obnoxious obstructions."

.

After the Star redoubled its public complaints, the company tried a new tack. The overhead wire system on New York Avenue was removed, and that portion of the Eckington line began runningyes, more horsecars!

.

The Washington Post commented that switching to horses "will mean a considerable increase in the expense to the company, which already has its stables full of horses that are not in condition for use, and it will give the residents on the line a poorer service.

.

snip

.

A final try didn't work

.

A last desperate effort went into making the Eckington line viable. In early 1896, the company hosted the demonstration of a streetcar powered by compressed air, which it gambled would be both publicly acceptable and economically viable. The compressed air system used the pressure of air from canisters stored underneath the passenger seats to push pistons that turned the car's wheels. The compressed air was heated with steam to increase its force as it moved out of the canisters.

Theory no longer, streetcars scrutinized by commuters, partiers

Tera Dowell-Vests bus, or at least the bus she hoped would be her bus, was so jammed Monday that the driver wouldnt even open the door. So she walked a few blocks to a streetcar stop on H Street.

.

I was fully expecting the streetcar to be packed. Its going to be like San Francisco, with people hanging off the back bumper to get to us, Dowell-Vest said. What the communications professor got instead was an airy, almost empty streetcar that showed up within three minutes and a sweet commute.

.

Everything looks new. And the ride itself feels new, and thats exciting, said Dowell-Vest, noting she felt none of the lurching thats a constant of bus life. You dont want to start your day feeling like youve been jerked around.

.

I kind of find it pointless, because of all the money that went into this, Mattison said. Still, as the train pulled up at 9:50 a.m. Monday, he didnt argue with the results: It got me to work on time.

.

snip

.

The streetcar already seems to be resolving issues for some.

.

Warner Coleman, who works for the Districts Department of Human Services, said the streetcar may solve his parking problem near his office on H Street.

.

Dont even talk about it. A lot of tickets towed and everything, Coleman said. Ive just had the gamut.

.

He said the city should make a deal with the federal government to allow commuters to use the usually empty RFK Stadium parking lot near the final streetcar stop. It would be good for drivers and feed passengers into the nascent streetcar system, Coleman said, while also pulling cars off congested streets.

Washington, D.C.'s Streetcar Suburbs: A Comparative Analysis of Brookland and Brightwood, 1870-1900

http://hdl.handle.net/1903/16877

The evolution of public transportation systems in the
large American cities of the late nineteenth century culminated
in the innovation of the streetcar. Such transportation
changes affected urban structure and by the last
quarter of the century had produced a distinctive residential
area, the streetcar suburb. Washington, D.C. had a number
of such suburbs, some the result of subdivision development
associated with the extension of streetcar lines to link
existing village suburbs to the downtown core, others the
product of concurrent residential subdivision and streetcar
development. Such suburbs were predominantly middle-class,
white, residential areas.
An examination of two Washington, D.C. suburbs:
Brightwood and Brookland, indicated distinct physical,
social, economic, and demographic structures in these
village suburbs in the early 1880's. After the subsequent
introduction of streetcar links to downtown Washington--an
employment core characterized by much white-collar
government employment--the two suburbs became increasingly
similar in terms of the chosen measurements. By the end of
the century, there was little in their structures to indicate
the very different paths they had taken to the same end.

The Alaska Railroad delivers seven side-dump rail cars of Fairbanks snow to Anchorage on Thursday morning, March 3, 2016, to enable Iditarod to stage a ceremonial start on Saturday.

.

Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race mushers will travel only three miles through Anchorage during Saturday's ceremonial start instead of the traditional 11-mile route to the Campbell Airstrip, race organizers announced Wednesday.

.

Lack of snow in the city prompted the Iditarod Trail Committee to shorten the route, officials said in a written statement. The 85 mushers and their sled dog teams will still start on Fourth Avenue and D Street in downtown Anchorage. They will travel onto Cordova Street, past Sullivan Arena and onto the Chester Creek Trail. Their run will end at the Davenport baseball fields, between Northern Lights Boulevard and East 20th Avenue off Lake Otis Parkway.

.

But Karl Heidelbach, Iditarod Anchorage start coordinator, said spectators shouldnt expect to park at the baseball fields this year. Adjacent parking will be reserved for mushers trucks. Heidelbach said race organizers are hoping to have mushers load their sled dogs into their trucks immediately after they finish the ceremonial route. They will then rotate other trucks into the lots.

.

The Iditarod announcement of a shortened route came two days after Alaska Railroad spokesman Tim Sullivan said a regularly-scheduled freight train would haul seven rail cars of snow from Fairbanks to Anchorage this week to help with the Iditarod ceremonial start and Fur Rondy events, like the Running of the Reindeer. That train left Fairbanks Wednesday.

.

Stan Hooley, Iditarod CEO, said at a scheduled media briefing Wednesday afternoon the Fairbanks delivery would add to the snow already stockpiled in Anchorage for the events. Heidelbach said a tarp was put over the stockpile in case of rain.

.

Weve done what we can, Heidelbach said. We have been evaluating this and stalling this decision as long as we possibly can to make the best with what weve got.

.

When it comes to snow, Anchorage doesnt have a lot. The National Weather Service reported Monday that the last of the snow had melted at its West Anchorage office. During the 29 days of February, the weather agency recorded 1.8 inches of snow at its office, all of that falling Feb. 21.
