The only American numbers that I can talk to are the Jim Kimberly Number 5,
the Cunningham 60 series and John Edgar's 98. Dan Gurney was 48, but his

The NEMA Secretary maintains a registry. They do not change numbers, even for the top ten. Folks did not want to have to repaint their cars. Of course, now that cars have become throwaway items,

AAA cars were assigned numbers based on the prior years' point
standings. The first ten were usually pretty much by that rule, but as
numbers went up there were exceptions, and for "new " cars
