BNSF and L&D action at New Iberia, Abbeville, and places in between -- 15-16 August 2019
James Robichaux
These two sets of pictures, the first one rather small and the second one ridiculously large, made on consecutive days one year ago go together. One year ago today, I made this small set of images in New Iberia, Louisiana, on a very wet afternoon, showing a BNSF Railway crude oil train and some Louisiana & Delta Railroad action, including the bringing of a just-built train for the Abbeville Branch onto the beginning of the branch. The next day, one year ago tomorrow, I made this really large set of images of action on the branch. Thanks for looking. James

Well, I've been muckin' around the Bridge Hunter website. It's a real bonanza for RR photogs. First you can search by state. Within State, you can search by railroad, and the see pix and Google street view. In addition there is the geo coordinates so that your GPS will take you right to it. It will tell you the length of the span(s), the kind of bridge, and build date.
Now all I need to do is figure out the difference between a Pony Truss, and a Warren Truss and many other bridge designs.
Plan your pix now.....

David Crockett was also a Katy Pullman on the LW Texas Special.

Davy, Davy Crockett, train of the wild frontier
One of two name trains commemorating early Texas heroes.
Stephen F. Austin got a Katy passenger car named after him. Perhaps others.

The proofs for my "Passenger Trains of Texas - Rock Island" book arrived here this morning. So far everything looks good. I'll have this back at the printer by the first of next week so hopefully we might have the books done in the next two and a half weeks.

Re: Brady Junction
Jim King
I’m sure Brady Island relates to Brady in some way, and they were likely in the same vicinity. Brady Island was part of John T. Brady’s land, but it wasn’t an island originally. It did not become an island until the ship channel built a cut and created the island. Why they made the cut…I don’t know, but I’d like to.
So a related question is…does “Brady” (as listed in RCT construction records) equate to “Brady Junction” (as mentioned in Railway Age), or are they two different locations? (and where!?) My assumption is that both Brady and Brady Junction were south of Brays Bayou, as is Brady Island.
I’m working on a major update to the Tower 102 page. The future I-GN line that crossed there was built by the Houston Belt & Magnolia Park (HB&MP) for which John T. Brady was the principal investor. S G Reed describes its 1890 construction in some detail. What I’m really trying to determine is how and when the (future) SP line that crossed at T102 was built. There were several receiverships and ownership changes and I’m hoping to drill down a bit deeper and determine precisely when (and who) built that line, and in what stages. Among the major questions…who built the bridge over Brays Bayou 800 ft. downstream from the GH&H bridge? And when? There’s an RCT record that says the HB&MP built 4.07 miles between Houston and Brady in 1895, and that’s the most likely candidate. But the HB&MP was in receivership at the time. And…where exactly did those 4.07 miles go (and how and where did they tie into the existing HB&MP tracks?) If we knew for certain where this 4.07 miles was located, we could figure out how the GL&H used the HB&MP tracks “as an entrance into Houston” in 1895.

An 1898 edition of Railway Age gives “Brady Junction” as the endpoint of the Galveston, La Porte and Houston RR. Does anyone have any “objective evidence” of precisely where Brady Junction was located? A map or a pre-1910 timetable (likely SP) would be ideal. The only location with “Brady” in the name that shows up in the USGS Domestic Names database is nearby Brady Island, but that’s not Brady Junction.

Re: Black Gold, Texas Tea

My FRISCO passenger timetable collection is a bit spotty. The August 1953 issue is the last one that shows trains 517-518 going to both Dallas and Ft Worth. From what I see in Table 17 below, it certainly appears the train called at Dallas Union Terminal, then turned and went on to Ft Worth.
How did they time to turn the “Gold” in Dallas in just 20 minutes ??? Knowing DUT crews performed switching, they would have used Union Terminal’s Wye, and those fellas with 7-Spot never moved that fast !!! So who was it done ??
Note, the timetable allowed 1’10” between Dallas and Ft Worth which suggests routing over the RI. Hummmm

It's not obvious unless you see a full passenger train schedule or employee timetable that
the BLACK GOLD did a shuffle between Ft. Worth and Dallas which did not involve a combination of trains at Irving. Example: The BLACK GOLD would leave Ft. Worth and head all the way over to Dallas on the Rock Island's line. There it would take on passengers and then depart for Irving, Sherman, and points north. Southbound the BLACK GOLD would stop at Dallas before heading over to Ft. Worth. Cotton Belt passenger trains did a similar shuffle on its own line when Ft. Worth was still served.

Judging from the Dallas and Fort Worth arrival and departure times, I’m thinking the southbound train split into two sections and was reassembled into one northward train in Irving. Otherwise, the southbound train into Dallas would have to be turned 180° to go to Ft Worth, and vice versa. Can anyone confirm?

photos of train on since-closed L&D Abbeville Branch - 8 August 2019
James Robichaux
I am cranking through my many pictures that I took of action on the former SP Midland Branch that has, since about 1990, gone only to Abbeville, Louisiana. With the closure of the rice mill at the end of the line in Abbeville earlier this year, which I had a feeling would happen, which was part of why I devoted so much time and attention to it over the last year, all but the first few miles of the branch have effectively (though, as far as I know, not (yet) officially) been shut down. This is a time-consuming process, and, of course, I could not do it in real time. So, given the pace of things, the next best thing, I figured, was to work to crank them out to be published a year later, which is now and for the next eight or nine months. So, bear with me, please, as I post this stuff over the next eight or nine months, but know that it's of a line that is now shut down and may not ever see a train again! It's of a branchline that was still dominated by railroad-owned hopper cars in 2020, and that's a big part of why I liked it so much. Anyway, here is another large set of images from a train on the branch, this one made one year ago tomorrow: There will be more like this to come over the next tw0-thirds of a year. Thanks. James

IIRC: Several of the Gulf Coast Chapter NRHS cars are up in Cedar Park at the ASTA facility, not too long ago, they had acquired a former SP car at an Amtrak Auction & some photos had been circulated of Gulf Coast NRHS members removing graffiti from the car, that I assume originated after being placed in storage at one of amtrak yards.
