Yet Another Yahoo-Group Files Mirror on quikscript.net

Nathan Galt

I made my own copy of the uploaded files. I wanted to keep the metadata around, so I took screenshots of the files’ and directories’ metadata entries (descriptions, uploader, and upload date) and put those screenshots in various metadata.png files strewn throughout the already-there files.

I ended up compressing all the files into a .zip file. It doesn’t squish as well as a 7Zip archive, but just about anybody can open it without additional software.

Here it is: https://www.quikscript.net/read-alphabet-yahoo-groups-files.zip

If at all possible, download it and keep it on your computers’ drives, even if you never bother opening it. If quikscript.net goes down, all the original stuff like the letter-writing-circle letter will be available somewhere, ready to be reuploaded and shared with people who’re just getting into Quikscript for the first time.

Is the group migrating to groups.io?  If the message archive is to be kept, it has to happen soon.

Good question!

It seems like one of our administrators needs to do this, as part of the process involves sending an invitation from the Yahoo group to transfer@groups.io.

The instructions, that you need to sign in to view:

Due to the pending discontinuation of many parts of Yahoo Groups, we ask that all transfer requests be given the go ahead no later than December 1, 2019. We will not be able to guarantee any transfers submitted after that. Also note that it appears that most Photos sections are currently having an outage and it isn't known if they'll be restored prior to the deadline.

Easy Yahoo Group Transfer

Have a Yahoo Group that you want to transfer to Groups.io? We've made the process easy. Please read all of the following, as some of it has changed.

What We Transfer

We can transfer members, archives (without attachments, however), photos, files, links and databases. Calendar entries are not copied at this time.

Premium Group Required

For the transfer, we ask that you sign up for the Premium Yearly plan (you can downgrade to free after a year if you wish).

Steps To Transfer Your Group

These steps must be done in this order otherwise the group transfer process will not happen.

  1. Create your new Groups.io group and upgrade it to premium for a year.
  2. Set up and start the transfer process by clicking the Set Up New Transfer button, below. You'll be asked to select your Groups.io group and for the name of your Yahoo Group.
  3. Send an invite from your Yahoo Group to transfer@groups.io
  4. We will accept the invite and then send you an email directing you to make the transfer@groups.io member a moderator.
  5. After you have made the transfer@groups.io member a moderator, return here, select your Existing Transfer transfer, and tell us that you are ready for the transfer to happen. Your group must be signed up for the Premium Yearly plan.
  6. Once we receive the go ahead, as soon as we are able, we will download the member list and other parts of your Yahoo Group and directly add your members to your new Groups.io group.

Notes

  • We do not make any changes to your Yahoo Group. We simply make a copy of everything.
  • We will add all members that are currently confirmed and not bouncing to your group. Members' subscription preferences (email, no email, digest, etc.) will be preserved. Members' posting privileges (group default, override - moderated, etc.) will also be preserved. However, moderator and co-owner status will not be preserved, so all moderators will need to be reinstated after the transfer. If someone is already a member of your new group, we will not change anything about their subscription.
  • Unless you specify otherwise, we will send a notice to every member telling them about the transfer.
  • If you have created a customized welcome message for your group, we will also send that to each member who is not already a member of the new group.
  • We will send an email to the moderators and owners of the Groups.io group when the transfer is complete.
  • NOTE: If the new group is a subgroup at Groups.io, you will receive two transfer notices, one for transfering the members to the parent group, and one for transfering the members to the subgroup (all members of a subgroup must be members of the parent group).

Paige Gabhart is the owner, and I'm the only moderator. I'll start the ball rolling with the invite, but I don't know if I can upgrade a user to a moderator. I thought that was an owner thing.
   I guess we'll find out!

No need.  Someone needs to set up the group on groups.io (may require a little patience) and pay them US$110 for the first year.  Then you need to approve their bot's request to subscribe.  That's it: the bot doesn't change anything on Y!G, and will copy everything that's accessible to ordinary members (except calendar events).

As I understand it, the bot needs moderator permissions for…something. I’d be happy to start the group and plunk down the $110 once, but I’d need Paige chiming in here to say that she’s ready to give moderator permissions to the bot. (I assume moderators can’t make other moderators.)

Looking at Y!G help, it seems that a moderator may or may not have the privilege to make moderators, depending on how the owner created that moderator.

Terry,

I just now saw these messages.  I got the impression those of you writing may have thought I was MIA.

FYI  I am steadily using QS these days.  I certainly don't want the information on the the group site to be lost so I am ready to do what I can to insure that doesn't happen.

I had not seen much traffic on the Yahoo Groups site in quite a long time.  I have been covered up with work, and I get tons of e-mails so I did not take note of the e-mails back in April of this year.

So Yahoo Groups is being phased out?

I logged on to the site, and I have no control over anything apparently.

The other groups that I was a member of are not listed.  I can not see members names and e-mails.  Everything is gone!

I am not sure that I can approve anything at this point.  I cannot see the member list or anything on the site now that indicates I am the person that started the read_alphabet group.  All I can do is log in and change my password.

FYI - I am male, not female.

Terry,

I was a little confused when I sent my last e-mail to you.  I have managed to log in now, and I do have access to all ownership privileges.

I can see all the members now.  Is there something I can do to facilitate moving everything to groups.io?

Hello, Paige! Glad to hear from you. The group's been so quiet lately I've been wondering if *anyone's* around anymore.

All I did was send an invitation. I checked out the website, but they were going down for maintenance. I haven't seen a response yet; I wouldn't be surprised if they're swamped with all the people abandoning YGs.

It's nice to hear someone's using QS. I've got time now, and I'm still interested. I'll print out a chart and start scribbling. I've got the same problem I've always had; I can't even *hear* some of the sounds, so I can't place the characters when appropriate. I guess that means I'll be writing in a Midwestern American accent.

I've got a bit of cash, I'll put in an even split for the first year; $110.00, I think. So I'll pay $55.00 or whatever if someone can accept a Paypal payment - or I can pay for the group and whoever can drop me a few shekels.

John Cowan

Due to overwhelming demand, the price is up to $220, but it drops to $0 after the first year.

I live in Indiana.  I do distinguish between "caught" and "cot," however.  When I corresponded in 1976 with a New Zealander, I could *hear* his accent in his letters.  It actually seemed pretty cool to me.

To all:

I have created the new group QuikScript at groups.io.  I paid $220 to upgrade to a premium account so we can have everything from YGs transferred.  I would greatly appreciate people chipping in on this expense.  Let me know what you want to contribute (paige@...), and I will coordinate it to avoid too much being sent.

I sent an invitation to groups.io, but it has not yet been acknowledged.  It is estimated to take up to a week to transfer the data to the new site.

Cheers,

Paige Gabhart

I’ll chip in for an equal fraction of the $220, however much that ends up being.

Probably more like a month, given how swamped groups.io is.

People should now go to groups.io and sign up there.  Any messages will not cross-post, but they won't be lost either.

Update on Migration process:

We are moving Read_Alphabet to Groups.io as you are probably aware by now. The name of the migrated group will be QuikScript.  E-mail will be QuikScript@groups.io.

I received an e-mail a short time ago stating that the transfer bot is now a member of Read_Alphabet.
As required, I upgraded the bot to moderator status and told them to start the transfer.  No doubt that will take several days.  I am hoping it won't take a month as John Cowan prophesied.

This process is costing $220 for the first year.  After that my understanding is we can drop back to the free version of groups.io.

We have some people who have volunteered to help me cover the cost which I paid.  If just a few of you would donate $5 that would be greatly appreciated.

I started a PayPal money pool to raise $200.00  Here is the link:  https://paypal.me/pools/c/8jotjX2Gcp
Once I get to $200, I will shut it down.

Theoretically, we have 511 members.  At $5 per head, we only need forty people and it would be taken care of.

Thanks,

Paige Gabhart
