Nick:   From your description, it sounds like you have blown your current meter.  Is this meter fuse protected?  If so, thats your first suspect. If not, well, how about you send me a photo of this setup off list? I can tell you how to protect yourself going forward.

How to measure current to a Titan-U

ngeti@...

I have constructed a bread board of all the electronics that I want to put into a locomotive and I need to measure the current draw for all components combined. I hooked up a QSI programmer to this configuration so I can run it from the QSI CV manager on my computer.

I wired a simple panel ammeter in series with the +rail wire out of the programmer but the needle on the dial did not even wiggle when I cranked up the system. This doesn't seem likely. I would expect some movement on the meter. I also tried to measure the voltage across the + and - rail wires but that also yields zero. It doesn't make sense.

Would an RRampmeter device give a better result?

The reason for getting a reasonably accurate current reading is so I don't exceed the rating on a wireless control board that will replace the QSI programmer to run the locomotive.

I tried to load on a laptop running 8.1 but gave up and loaded on my “railroad” computer which is running 7.  Works fine now.

At one time, both of these programs worked fine but they were on different computers.

I recently loaded the drivers and CV manager on my new lap top.  Both CVManager and Q prog worked OK for a couple days.  I can still bring up CV manager, pull up an engine file and it displays information from the file on the CV Manager screens.  It will even show a test cab, but I can not connect with the decoder in the loco.  I tried numerous files and engines.  With Quan Prog, I can start it, the red light will light up on the QP box, and it will light a LED if i hold it to the test track rails, but again, I cannot reach the decoder.  I went to reload the drivers but the QSI Solutions web site says I already have the right updated drivers installed for windows 10.

( I did see that you should remove existing drivers before trying to install a driver, but it did tell me I already had the right driver installed)  I quess I must have done something to the computer to cause the fail, bt no clue as to what it was.  Last time I used it (less than 24hrs ago)  I had opened and worked with several files and decoders.

Any thoughts?

Thank you Ben, Ed, Jay and Kelly for your quick response and help. I also would like to see QSI succeed in continuing a great product.
Have a good weekend.

Reverse chuff sound stuck on

Tom Wilson

This is my first post in this group.
I have a BLI Paragon series 2-10-2 with a QSI Atsf 3800 class chip. Date is 2006. According to JMRI it is a QSI steam version 6. Firmware build 38, firmware build date 3/11/6.
I have owned this for a number of years, but only now getting it out to run it. Didnt have a layout at all. Now I at least have a semblance of a test running space.

When I run the locomotive in reverse, after the throttle is set to zero, the chuff sound continues on forever until I set the direction to forward.
Also, in reverse, the headlight strobes rapidly.
I reset the decoder to all factory defaults using the jumper method on the circuit board. It made no difference to either the chuff issue or the headlight issue.
I changed the headlight function from directional headlight to headlight. No difference.

I understand QSI may not even be around anymore?

Is this a known bug? Can I get a chip upgrade? Can I reflash the chip somehow? Or does some company flash these? I have no QSI hardware for any programming, just rely on JMRI or programming with my NCE Power Cab.

I am considering just pulling out the electronics and putting in something else if there is not a solution. But I feel like I spent enough on this thing several years ago and if I can get it resolved, would rather leave it in. There are some nice features with this decoder.

Thanks for any advice or help.

Tom Wilson

Hi group:

I have all the files that were on QSIS's site.  Right now I have not been able to make them available in the classy format you were accustomed to. I can send you individual ones if you know what you are looking for. I cannot vouch for the status of the files on the listed "site" you refer to.
I do hope to have more links on the download page of QSI, as time allows.

Subject: [QSIndustries] Kelly QSI sound files for download?

Hi all, is there a site where the sound files (both steam & diesel) can be downloaded for use with the QSI programmer? I know QSIS is out of business so I looked on the QSI Oregon site but the downloads page has none. If QSI Oregon is in fact supplying the decoders (like the Titan-U on their site) I would think the first thing would be to get the files up there for their customers to use with their product. If I cannot load sounds in a decoder why would I bother.
Thanks for you time
Steve

Re: Kelly QSI sound files for download?

Hi Steve,

The QSI Solutions website is still available, at the moment, at:

I think this indicates that the Wix paid account has expired, and the website is now running on the free version of Wix, which includes the Wix advertisements. I would expect the site to continue to be available here for the time being, however if it disappears I have a copy of the entire site and all the files and I will publish an unofficial mirror of the site if necessary.

(At one point I talked to Kelly at QSI about helping with the website transition, but I've dropped the ball on this. I've been so busy with life and real work projects that this is just about last priority. I would like to see QSI succeed though, as I love the products, and clearly the website is one of the issues that needs to be solved.)

Re: resets when power is applied

Lou

Jim, We just had a problem like this a few days ago. The reset glass reed switch is shorted. Open up the unit and find the reed switch. It is usually around the middle of the decoder and across the decoder board. Cut one end of the relay off and then put the engine back on the track and all should be well. If that fixes the problem remove the relay permanently. You can always do a software reset with the 3 CV action.

Hope this helps.

Re: resets when power is applied

Hi Jim,
Is this a question? a response to another post? a mistake?

Assuming you are describing a problem condition of a decoder, you likely either have a broken/shorted reset reed switch (small elongated glass covered magnetic switch), or you may have a missing or dislodged reset jumper, assuming you are using a V1-V7 QSI OEM decoder. The fix: cut one or both ends of the reed switch and use CV resets instead, or, replace/reattached the reset jumper, and power cycle the decoder (Off-On).

If you are using a different QSI decoder, try forcing a reset via CV control and see if that clears things up. On a Titan, check to see if the reset line is somehow shorted/connected to ground.
'Hope this helps. Have fun!
Best regards,
Geoff Bunza

Hi All

I have seen the postings and have communicated with Kelly and other users about QSI.  There are a lot of opinions and things to consider.  However, for me, for now, I am sticking with QSI.  I have six engines with QSI and two additional decoders to install in other engines.  In the future, I will need several additional decoders.  Not being a typical model railroader, as I do not count success based on the quantity of engines I own.  So hopefully I won’t need but a few additional decoders.  I will need some type of decoders for my trolley/interurban cars and I don’t know what brand as currently I don’t believe QSI has a trolley or interurban type decoder.  If they do I will use QSI.  I also have the QSI programmer and am beginning to get to know how to use it.

 Hello all,

To be fair, Kelly (a manager at QSI - Oregon) has stepped up and is in the process of correcting the errors of QSIS (QSI Solutions - Vermont).   I personally have recently received a warranty replacement for a Titan U from Kelly.  QSI is still in business - QSIS is not.

Kevin, I had a similar problem with loading firmware and posted the problem here.   Gerry (also from QSI - Oregon) suggested "Forcing the Bootloader" in the beginning of the QSI Upgrade.   The Force Bootloader 'switch' is found in the top left (If I remember correctly it's a pull down menu) of the start page.

As far as upgrades (new sound files, working variable dynamic brake, etc.) I am  hoping it comes soon.
