Re: QSI problem
Denny Anspach <danspach@...>
Perhaps someone can push me in the right direction.
I have a BLI 2-8-2 that I successfully programmed to four digits, and it worked OK over a period of months. I went to get it out for some demonstration operations for my grandchildren recently, and it was "dead". No sounds, no lights, no motion. I checked the <address> and it was now a completely different number than had been originally programmed. I then reset the decoder, and programmed the correct number again. This time it responded, and the engine did everything that it was supposed to do, except still no lights. I set it aside for two days until the children came. I then tried it again, but this time the only sound that I could get was the "background", but no other sounds (whistle, or bell), and it would not move (or, of course, chuff). Very frustrating, if not downright irritating. I then checked the CV, and- the only response that I now got was that "there was now no decoder"! What is happening? No decoder can be read, the only sound is the "background", the lights will not work at all, and the engine will not move? Denny -- Denny S. Anspach, MD Sacramento, California

Confirm that the address that you are using for the decoder is in agreement with the 'Speed Step' of the decoder. Locomotive lighting flickering with speed changes is indicative of mismatched speed step assignment between the command station and the decoder. -----Original Message-----Do you use 28 speed steps, and the decoder expects 14 speed steps? 'cause in 14 speed step mode the F0 is part of the speed command, as the least significant bit. Thus going at the station from 0 to 1 the light goes on, but speed is still 0. from 1 to 2 the light goes off, and the loco starts moving (or tries to), and so on. Anyway, check if CV29 is setup right. actually bit 1 of bits 0 to 7 should be set to 1 if you're using 28 (or 128) speed steps, and 0 if you're using 14 speed steps. cheers/jw

Don Borden <daborden@...>
I have played with the Soundtraxx decoders and find you can adjust the
start-up for different but consisted diesel units to initiate revs at slightly different times making multiple unit lash-ups sounds even more interesting. Has anyone played with the QSI decoders to do the same thing? Donald Borden Doylestown, PA daborden@...

K4 Headlight Problem
Greg Johnson <greg1950@...>
Hello,
I also posted this on the Broadway Limited list, so if you are on both, please excuse the duplication. I just received my K4 and it runs like a watch and looks beautiful. However, I am having problems with the headlight; it flickers nearly every time I change speeds. Also sometimes it turns off and sometimes it is on. In addition, the F0 doesn't seem to have any effect on it. I tried the reset, but that didn't help. Does anybody know how to fix this problem? I tried removing the smokebox front and giggling the wires, but there was no change. Thanks, Greg Johnson

QSI does not currently sell directly to the aftermarket. Their decoders are designed as specified by the locomotive manufacturer, and are available only installed in a locomotive. Ross

Engine sounds
Bob Young <bob.young@...>
Is it possible to purchase a QSI sound decoder with a specific
locomotive engine sound or is the QSI sound a single generic sound for makes and types of diesel motors. I ask beciase all of the QSI diesel sound decoders that I have heard sound the same regardless of the actual locomotive in which they are installed.

I'm sorry, Idahoan, I should have encluded the answer from Athearn. Here it

is: The screws that hold the shell in place are located under the Boiler half-top just in front of the cab (Part # 19) and under the Steam Dome cover that is in about the center of the boiler top (Part # 26). These parts are press fit so it simply a matter of popping them off. The tender has two screws on either side of the rear coupler box that have to be removed. To remove the screw that holds the tender body on from the top you first have to remove the box that immediately behind the coal/oil bunker. It is press fit on. Then you have to slide the coal/oil bunker back a little bit in order to release it and access the screw. Sincerely, Athearn Trains

the speed....BUT on idle will NOT identify the loco number. Forgot to mention that I have tried (in Operations mode) 17 in CV64 and then also tried 18 in CV64 (per 'Note' on page 19 of manual). It repeats the full extended id after setting CV64...but will still not id the full extended address when on the layout.

F10 Problem on Verbal Status

I have an Atlas HO PA (#8703) that in neutral identifies itself and
also the speed if moving. I have just received an Atlas HO C.J (#2410) that will identify the speed....BUT on idle will NOT identify the loco number. It does id the cv and value when changing values. Both locos have extended 4-digit addresses. Any suggestions other than doing a reset and then changing the address again to 4-digit????
