YOTA QSX YouTube Interview!

I just watched the 2018 YOTA QSX interview on YouTube and got really excited about this rig. I read about it on the website but hearing about it right from the inventor/designer was even more interesting. Watch it if you haven't already. I guess Hans would be further along on it if he weren't so talented and successful on all the present kits he offers :).
One thing that caught my attention was his comment about those of us who like to build kits and don't really aspire to use them so much on the air. That's me!! I thought for sure he was looking right at me when he said that. Looking forward to the QSX...even though I don't use them so much, I do love the full features on his QRP rigs! |

Five years says not to get your hopes up. I thought this would be a really cool rig myself, but I doubt it will ever see the light of day. The last official update was almost three years ago.

The last update explained the situation in some detail and also specified when the next update would be. All that is still valid.
And I've changed, based on the mistakes if that experience. Hence what happens now - just a surprise one day. On that day you have to eat all those doubts!

Well, I'm just going by the FAQ on your website with a date of July 2020: "When will QSX be available? We don't have an exact date, it depends how long it takes to finish all the above features and manufacture it etc. *Hopefully* something like November 2018, but this could change. Any updates will be published on this page. "
I would be happy to eat all of those doubts, but no other updates
or projected dates are shown there, and that includes the posted

On the other hand, a lot of the work needed to do a multi-band SDR rig has already seen the light of day in the QDX. Some of that should carry over to the QSX. In my opinion, the main thing holding back the QSX is the scale of the project. It will be a substantially larger and more complex kit than anything Hans has offered to date. It means a bunch of development time before any payout happens, unlike smaller kits that he can offer more quickly. Hans will have to front more money to kit them, as it's likely it will sell thousands of units in short order, and the BoM will be more costly than any kit he has offered to date. Hans doesn't do preorders or Kickstarters, so don't bother trying to convince him to do either of those. That scale will also come with different expectations for the polish of the product. Hans's designs are brilliant and an excellent value for money, but the QSX will likely cost $200 or more in the fully configured multiband version and that will change things. He said $150 back in the day but costs have gone up since then, and other rigs like the T41-EP and the sBitx have shifted people's expectations about the display. (But he's already got the support thing down.) I'm looking forward to seeing the QSX happen, especially as it's likely to be a more field-friendly radio than the ones I named above. Hans is targeting a smaller size and lower power consumption; I'm envisioning something that's more like a KX2 or an mcHF in size. The 2018 YOTA video is inspiring, for sure. In terms of the QSX development and release - I will wait for Hans’ release. For me and my use of QRP transceivers, Hans and QRPLabs has produced only incredible radios at an unchallenged dollar value. If the plans on the QSX follow those tenets, I will “hurry up and wait” for its release announcement. In the meantime, my QCXs and the current Solar Cycle will fill the void of time. In short - when the QSX is released, I’m sure it will be worth the wait. |

I am also waiting for the QSX. I don't think the T-41 or the sBitx are quite in the same class, though. They are not great portable radios. The T-41 doesn't have WARC bands either. Those are both interesting radios, though. Also, Hans has the functionality there in his radios right off the top, whereas the other two are much more experimental radios. I may very well want to build the T-41, but I won't be taking on any SOTA outings. -- 73, Dan NM3A |

Rather than pooping on Hans for the delays, I prefer to be grateful for all the great products he has already provided and the excellent support. Even if the QSX never sees the light of day. I would love to and will be really happy to see the QSX, but have been around enough to have a clue as to all that Hans has on his plate. Keep up the great work Hans!

I took the time to watch all the videos I could find last night about the QSX. I learned a lot more about the project. It didn't answer all my questions but I like it. I found QRP-Labs from the QSX page first. I will be an early adopter. ;)
