Raspberry Pi + QDX + JS8Call
I have only been using WSJT-X for many months and wanted to get back to JS8Call and PSK31. I am using "Build a Pi " 64 bit OS with all updates.
1) I solved the pi's USB recognition issue of the QDX by installing a switch on the 12 V line to the QDX. All is well and works smoothly if I turn on the 12V to the QDX only after the pi OS has completed booting. I leave the USB connector plugged in. 2) WSJT-X works FB 3) JS8Call shows the CAT connection as "green" but no PTT (red). Settings as in Hans' letter, above. 4) Looking for terminal commands to install JTDX for 64 bit pi OS. 5) I could not figure out FLDIGI setup. I had it working when I first built the QDX but after the update last year to 64bit OS it only seems to sort of work occasionally but no PTT. Old ham perhaps needing new DDR4 modules plugged in between my ears. 73 Earl |

I used to think the Red was bad also, but I found in the Docs that it is SUPPOSED to turn Red if it works so the Red is good. My Wsjtx works and mine turns Red so that's fine. Be sure the power slider on the right hand side of the Wsjtx main window is fully up to max. It needs to be to have the QDX transmit. If it isn't then then the QDX LED will be showing 2 short flashes repeatedly indicating not enough audio. 73, Cliff, AE5ZA

If I may jump in here I'd like to ask for guidance for what you've described here, but I want a pi terminal that is lightweight and portable. No large keyboard or display, ideally it should mount on bicycle handlebars, or the passenger side dashboard of a compact car. Looking for recommended hardware and other amateurs experience.

Hi Cliff,
Thanks for the info. Darned if I can figure it out. The PTT tests OK but there is no RF out and the LED on the QDX remains steady. I get the monitor tone out of the speakers. I updated everything this afternoon and receive is working. I am using the same xcvr and usb settings as for WSJT-X, which works perfectly. 73 Earl |

Ok, I misunderstood what you were saying worked. My bad. I've only used JS8Call once and as I recall it was very similar to Wsjtx. Fldigi I have a lot more experience with so please explain how you set it up for rig control of the QDX. What method, rig name, baud rate and serial port. I use flrig with flrigi as flrig has the QDX as one of the defined rigs. It also can be used with Wsjtx and JS8Call so only one rig control setup for all three. 73, Cliff, AE5ZA

The PTT will turn red even if the proper path is not selected -- I just tried it with 'DTR' selected for my QDX. To operate QDX, the PTT selection should be set to 'CAT'

Ron, I use android pads and other devices running VNC for this purpose via the Pi's built in RNDIS Gadget support over USB. I carry a tiny wireless keyboard with me, but rarely need to use it unless I'm troubleshooting something. |
